Free Music Review: It All Comes Around Sooner Or Later

For historical purposes this was the very first brand new CD I ever received,as a stocking stuffer when I was 13 years old. While I enjoyed it very much I don't think I could've appreciated how important this album was at the time that I heard it. In fact,for some reason or another I never really listened to this album much after that point. It was'nt until hearing the bands next (and final) release House of Music that I came to fully appreciate the breadth of their talents. Basically this band,know as being the domain of Raphael Wiggins (now Saadiq) basically had a similar purpose and mission to Teddy Riley's band Guy-that is the idea of creating a hip/hop-R&B and new jack swing based style of music using real instruments and it's only fitting both bands debut the same year. The Toni's approch here however is somewhat earthier in approch. They rely on live instrumentation and yes,that was their main showcase but more than that the music is filled with strong jazz and reggae style rhythmic exchanges and rather complex chord progressions. There's a certain level of repetition to the album considering that,as with most albums of the early 90's it does have a tendency to run about five or six songs ahead of where it perhaps should've. But of course that takes nothing away from the albums more powerful moments. It begins with one of it's most powerful songs,musically and compositionally with "If I Had No Loot";a song with just the right kind of funky sugar and spice to get it off the ground and,of course the same goes for another favorite in "My Ex Girlfriend" along with the heavily jazz influenced hip hop/funk styled "Gangsta Groove" and "Fun". The album is not in abudance on slow jams but when it does offer them they come in the form of songs such as "Slow Wine",which is not actually disimilar to the approch that Prince took to retro soul not too before with songs such as "Slow Love",although more early 70's than late 60's rhythmically in this case. On other songs such as "Tonyies!In The Wrong Key" and "Dance Hall" give audience to some of the more Jamaican style reggae touches in the vocal arena. "Anniversary" is a very inventive 9+ minute midtempo jazzy groove carried along by some excellent gypsy styled guitar riffs. This album,a few danceable and repetitious moments aside one of the most inventive and influential albums of it's era and showed that even by starting with older styles of music as a base contemporary ideas are not necessarily a bad place from which to focus those sounds musically.
