Free Music Notes for AenimaFree Music Review: THINK FOR YOURSELF - QUESTION AUTHORITY Hit: 5 Stars
Dick Schapp once said of his interview subjects: I hated him for being such an extraordinary person, because it made writing my story so difficult - nothing I penned was good enough to describe a phenomenal human being. Such is the problem with this review.
TOOL is led by the most phenomenal frontman in heavy music. His name is Maynard James Keenan. Luckily for TOOL, the rest of the band is equally amazing at their instruments. And their third recording (if you count Opiate) is probably one of the top 5 albums ever made - I kid you not.
TOOL is about right-brain, manly metal music. It is about introspective lyrics that, on the face of things, are difficult to figure out. It is about anger (read the words to Aenima, the song). And it is about creating songs not for radio, but for texture, for complexity, for emotion, and for density.
Eulogy may be one of the most offensive songs ever written about Jesus Christ (it questions his Messianic qualities), but look inward, and you'll see what MJK is saying - you may have thought this yourself. Hooker [...] is offensive in its own right, but it also has a message that is fueled with hyperactive riffs and sonic drumming. Third Eye is an epic that leaves you stunned. And Stinkfist? It's the song that MTV would only call "Track #1" on its video rotation. Obviously, they missed the whole point. There's also a song that has someone reciting something in German - don't worry, it's not about the Third Reich - it's just an egg recipe.
In the world of music, TOOL does more. Most bands record a few good tracks, and toss a load of crap in, just to fill an album. In the age of dowloadable songs, is that such a great idea anymore?
TOOL is a metaphor for intelligent, heavy, industrial, angst-ridden prog rock that grabs you by the scrotum, twists you around, and throws you up in the air. Before you hit the ground, it throws you curve balls like the mind boggling "Ions(-)" and continued references to water and crying. What is going on?
Remember, this is a band that lays claim to the practice of lachrymology (the study of crying), has a lead singer who tattooed his vertebrae to his back, prances around on stage (at least during this tour) in a wig and [...], tricked everyone into thinking they all died in a bus crash, and produces videos with agonized clay-mation figures being mutilated.
Are you intrigued? Well then, what the hell does it take?
Free Music Review: Growing up with tool Hit: 5 Stars
To the religious person inappropriately posting a review here:
First off, you shouldn't be talking about that here. This is a review for a CD that I would imagine most people would have either been referred to by Amazon's interest detection system, because they know someone who listens to this music, they are interested in the music, etc... You shouldn't come here to post you rheteric and personal issues against this type of music. Second off, your claims have little basis and foundation in reality as do most claims I have heard from most people who attempt to inappropriately anaylze and pin-point specific influences in a very complex social system.
I grew up listening to Tool since elementry school and it has been far more rewarding than damaging. His music inspires me and enhances my creativity in contrast to that monotonous mainstream garbage. In fact, I don't think I know any cases in my local area where people listening to Tool lead them to satanism or any of the other things you mentioned. Granted their work is heavily influenced by drugs (like alot of other musicians and artists in general), some people think they need them to really push the enevelope of creativity. Personally, their music helps me expand my mind and creativity without the use of drugs which is why I think its great. Regardless, you are basically making completely unbacked claims and you really need to show some properly documented and controlled statistical research before you can make absolute claims like that. I am not saying it absolutely doesn't effect people in a negative way, but from what I have seen, on average, it didn't make me or any of my friends any worse off than before. I am personally not religious (yes, even before I listened to Tool), but I have no issues with religous people unless they start saying nonsensical stuff that just de-educates the minds of people and attempts to regress/slow the evolution of the human race.

Anyhow, as a review this is a great CD. Its kinda like Pink Floyd meets metal... but thats just may way of looking at it :P
Actually have had this CD for a while and listened to it for about 10 years, but wrote a when I saw that rediculous religious person's review.
Great music, love his new stuff and A Perfect Circle too (except for that cover CD). Can't wait until the new CD comes out, def going to get that!
Free Music Review: Best album ever? Hit: 5 Stars
I thought that alot of the reviews here explained the importance of this Ænima quite well, but for an album this great, there needs to be a better reason to buy TOOL's albums explained. I won't waste anymore time and I will get right to business. It's about Fall, 1998 and I'm watching MTV and they are showing some silly show with sock puppets on the chanel. And they introduce a video I had never seen before called "Sober". I watched it, and didn't really catch any of the song, but the vocals attracted me quite a bit. The part that got me was the animation done to create this video. It was really immense. And to make a long story short, I went to the store and bought Ænima (thinking it had 'Sober' on it) and went home and played it. On track one, the vocals were beautiful in a way I had never heard a male sing. Like a little boy in a snowy forrest. Then he starts yelling (not losing any melody) and the emotions were flying. Tool really made what most musicians can't do in a whole album on just one song! And it isn't even the best one of their's in my opinion. Next comes Eulogy. You have the feeling like you are in a jungle, vast, thick, never ending, wet, yet beautiful. Then all of a sudden, like the shot of a gun, a blood rush comes and your startled like hell. This is pure chaos and hell. The song makes you feel like your a soldier in a war. From silence to bombs and gunfire. Then Maynard lyrics come into play and you relize that he is talking about some leader. And that this leader is betraying his people. This song is one of the best. From this track on is a world full of wonder that I will let you all discover for yourselfs. However I want to tell about Ænema. From second one I got the image of bamboo trees blowing in the breeze on a rainy night. The rain get intense and grows more and more as the song gets heavier and starts to sting my face and shoulders. Then at the part where he says "Cause I'm praying for rain" it starts to downpour, but doesnt hurt so much anymore, and water is rising from the ground. And well you can guess what happens after that. In a nutshell, this album will touch almost anyone and will give people a mindtrip. Not like any other band around or ever created. They are original in their own way and nothing can be compared to their music and they cant be classified. Do yourself a favor and buy it.
Free Music Review: Reinventors of metal and genre defiers Hit: 5 Stars
Tool is unlike any other band on the planet or in any dimension! They are metal, yet progressive, yet not metal. Not your typical Nu-metal or post punk or post rock or whatever label you want to put on them. They have created their own rhythms, styles and melodies that defy everything that most people consider "metal" or "progressive" or "rock". Hard hitting, chanting invoking Tribal infused rhythms that unleash the inner being of animus and energy within, lyrics that speak of healing/magick and pain, bass lines that add a massive depth to the music, and guitar riffs that crunch and wail throughout ones soul. Aenima(IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW YOU SPELL IT PEOPLE, STOP OVER OBSESSING AND OVER ANALYZING EVERYTHING!) at its very core is an amazing work of art that centralizes around the colors electric blue, black, white and green, and emphasizes the unleashing of anger and resentment toward humans, all the while converting pain into power and experience. Raw lyrics sung by one of the most beautiful voices on the planet, laid over some of the most head nodding and soul evoking sounds. Dig deep down into yourself and feel what comes out of you when you hear this music. Some kind of primal feeling of something that is had to remember, yet you know it is there. Aenima is an experience of emotion and pure energy. No other bands can do that. None come close. Tool is in their own catagory. Don't get me wrong, there are no humans on this earth that are better than any other humans, and to think so is pure idiotic and sub-servient. One of the core themes around Tool is the empowerment of the self, which a lot of Tool fans, and metal fans forget or don't know about. Some praise Tool as gods. Please people, they are just people too. Every artists is just a person who happened to speak first. WE all think these things and feel them, some of us just say them first and say them loud. I love Tool, and I think they are amazing musicians. I think that Aenima is chock full of anger, misdirected at that. Anger is good, if one knows how to utilize it and put it in its place. The mystical side of this cd is a wonderful and a great journey into the pain of humantiy and power of us all. I don't believe that this is their greatest accomplishment(LATERALUS IS THE ONE), but this is certainly one of the best albums of its decade and of our generation. But then again, what Tool album isn't?
Free Music Review: The Mozart of all vocal music Hit: 5 Stars
Well, my one line summary pretty much summarizes my feelings for this group. I have been listening to tool constantly since i first heard the Sober video and watched the twisted genious at work that created such a film. Since then, as i grow and learn, the lyrics, which i have printed out for each song and read over every once in a while hit me on new levels upon each reading. Their lyrics upon first reading leave the impression that this group supports all things which the mass of people in the world consider "evil." However, as the depth of reading and interpretation grows and evolves, the true meaning and genious of the lyrics is revealed. This album to me is the epitome of the genious of Tool. I was sitting in a car one day and heard Eulogy start up. I listened closely for hte first time to the introduction where each instrument comes individually. When i truly listened to it, i was in awe of the fluidity that the song works. Each instrument fades! ! in individually, the strumming of the guitar is incredible, the drums, solemnly beating in the background are again splendid. I can not begin to describe my admiration for this band. Reading the interviews that Maynard has given and reading a small biography of him gave me so much respect for his vast intellect and his well read nature. From day one, their music has struck me as essentially what i would consider flawless vocalism of the human state and nature. The drums are splendid and so incredibly complex. the way that Tool uses the Bass guitar is incredibly impressive. Usually bands use the bass as a background instrument, but tool brings it to the front to further drive their message into the soul. The lead guitars are amazing. I cant begin to even describe how good Maynard is. He is truly a singer. Ozzy Osbourne is excellent in terms of being a rock singer, but Maynard has bridged the gap. he is truly a vocallist. He could just as easily be singing opera or j! ! azz or whatever form of music you can think of.If anyone! reading this commentary/review has never payed attention to Tool before, start now. This is the epitome of all music that i have ever heard...It rivals in perfection in vocal music as what Amadeus Mozart did for instrumental music. that is all im going to say, and i doubt that anyone has read this far.
