Free Music Review: What a Way to Begin!
Hit: 5 Stars

The defining characteristic of Tool's debut album "Opiate" is it's raw, down-to-the-music quality. It definitely sets up the stage for the following albums. As typical with Tool (and all of Maynard's other works) the scrutinizing of society, religion, and human behavior is a major aspect of the album. The opening track "Sweat" and the first live track "Cold and Ugly" introduce the psychological journeying that Tool is well known for. The rest of the album deals mostly with the narrow-minded, unquestioning, and dogmatic aspects of society...especially people that hold positions of authority and attempt to suppress those who question their merit--which is represented by the demonic-looking, three-bodied priest on the cover.

The overall theme of "Opiate" is anger and frustration with condescending authority figures. This definitely paves the road for the following album "Undertow." Though "Opiate" differs greatly from Tool's later works by being less puzzling and obscure, it holds its own in creativity and depth. The musical foundations are gruff and sharp. Danny's drumming is jaw-dropping and intense, as usual (however less extensive than in his later works). And Maynard's lyrics and vocals are the hot metal bar that brands this album into the listener's memory. His lyrics are well-thought and demonstrate his remarkable poetic ability and creativity; however they are less mature than that of his later works. Also his vocal melodies are ripened with his intense and versatile voice--sometimes melodic, sometimes whispering, and sometimes screaming. "Opiate" probably won't appeal as much to the casually curious observer, but certainly is a must have for Tool fans (die-hard or just interested). Though controversial, I would recommend "Opiate" to anyone who appreciates creative and thought-provoking music.

Free Music Review: Still a great short album
Hit: 5 Stars

Despite this album only being six "real" songs, it's still amazing, and showcases Tool as a more angry band than what we experienced during Lateralus. The two live tracks "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-off" are absolutely amazing, especially the conclusion of Jerk-Off where Adam Jones trills and Maynard screams "Die" for about 15 seconds. While the lyrics of this album seem rather judgemental, especially in Opiate, Tool is a band that encourages people to think for themselves, so you can take whatever you want from these songs. I recommend Undertow, Aenema, and Lateralus over this, but it's still a great album.

Free Music Review: Excellent beginning of an epic band
Hit: 4 Stars

Tool's debut EP is a great starter for people who haven't heard Tool before. It's their worst album, just because the others are so great, but there are some real good songs on it.

Sweat (4/5)- Great song shows right off the bat what Tool's capable of. Instead of a bridge they play an instrumental break full of double bass and killer timings.
Hush (4/5)- A single that has an awesome video and cool meaning as well as humorous lyrics.
Part of Me (4/5)- Redundant lyrics don't stop this song from being great.
Cold and Ugly (4/5)- First of the two live songs on the EP, this song's a lot of fun to play drums to.
Jerk-Off (4/5)- The next live song has really good lyrics. I notice that Maynard repeats a lot of lyrics on this first album but any Tool fan knows that stops in the next couple albums.
Opiate (4/5)- The title track is my favorite song on the album. Excellent lyrics.

Even if you don't like anything about Tool, you should download Opiate the song just for the secret song, The Gaping Lotus Experience. It's hilarious and tells a great story. Sure, this is Tool's most lacking album but anyone who's heard their later stuff knows that this was just a warm-up.

Free Music Review: Good EP
Hit: 4 Stars

Good EP by a good band. It's not as musically advanced and technical as their future releases. But it's still enjoyable.
Oh, and Reijo Piipula, if you hate Tool than why the hell even write a review about them?
Would'nt you be better off writing a review about an album from a band you do like?
