Free Music Notes for OpiateFree Music Review: Still a great short album Hit: 5 Stars
Despite this album only being six "real" songs, it's still amazing, and showcases Tool as a more angry band than what we experienced during Lateralus. The two live tracks "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-off" are absolutely amazing, especially the conclusion of Jerk-Off where Adam Jones trills and Maynard screams "Die" for about 15 seconds. While the lyrics of this album seem rather judgemental, especially in Opiate, Tool is a band that encourages people to think for themselves, so you can take whatever you want from these songs. I recommend Undertow, Aenema, and Lateralus over this, but it's still a great album.
Free Music Review: Early Tool..very good Tool.. Hit: 5 Stars
"Opiate" was Tool's first effort and it's a gem. Not as polished as "Undertow" or "Ænima", the songs have a much heavier edge. Maynard's voice doesn't sound as full here as on the later efforts, but it's still great. They music is fantastic, and you can really hear the beginnings of one of the most unique sounds in music today. The Tool sound."Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-off" are live and you can hear Maynard interacting with crowd, quite amusing. My favorite song on the album is "Opiate", but they are all superb. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Primitive Tool Hit: 5 Stars
Six song EP marks the beginning of prog-rock/metal heavyweights Tool. A mix of live and raw studio tracks make up the set, which shows the band at their most primal and stripped-down. That's not to say the album pales in comparison to their later work; it just rocks in an entirely different fashion. Frontman Maynard James Keenan steals the show with his passionate and genuinely frustrated delivering as he questions faith on the title track and lashes out at the band's record label on "Hush." Truly ballsy beginnings from a band who would only open up more on later releases.
Free Music Review: Opiate Hit: 5 Stars
Of Tool's three albums, this is denitely the most aggressive and for some, most powerful. The drumming is fantastic, original, and the technique will blow you away. The lyrics emphasize nonconformity and not necessarily religion, but the way religion is viewed. The guitar work shows nonconformity in its own way, with riffs which go against the musical theoretical grain, and while not technically difficult playing, it is definitely more creative than most metal bands cheesy fast high-note hammering. A must-buy, but I suggest the band's 'Undertow' album first.
Free Music Review: Tool starts off with a bang Hit: 5 Stars
The first Tool song I heard was 'Sober' and even though it is probably Tool's biggest single I didn't really care for it. After listening to all of Undertow I started to like the band more and then with their third release I started to love them. Once I founf out they had the EP Opiate (their pre-Undertow) disc I wanted to check it out. Many years later I'm here writing this review and I still think Tool's Opiate is the best EP ever made. If your a fan of Tool or good old rock music in general give it a listen or two and see how it all started many years ago.
