Free Music Notes for OpiateFree Music Review: brilliant debut for a brilliant band Hit: 5 Stars
Before "Lateralus"...before the brilliant classic "Aenima" and even before the hard rock driven extremely dark and brooding "Undertow" album...there was "Opiate". Just like everything they would go onto do, Tool's music was sheer brilliance from start to finish on this 6 song, 26 minute EP. Not to mention two lives tracks jam packed with all the excellence that is Tool live. Back in these days (mainly with this cd and Undertow) Tool's music and lyrics were alot more angry compared to now. Maynard's words have always been clever and thoughtful as hell, even with this album, songs expressing rage such as "Jerk-Off" are by no means being [mad] just for the sake of it. This is being [mad] with a purpose. Obviously someone really did Maynard wrong, Dug the knife a tad too deep with him. Other songs like "Opiate" are speaking out against religion (always awesome) and subjects such as insecurity (Cold and Ugly) censorship (Hush) and drug addiction (Sweat) are instant classics. Since this cd is so damn short, and Tool is just too awesome anyways, I couldn't tell you the best songs on here. Just buy it, especially if you love Tool. Now if you're new to Tool, I would actually recommend the "Aenima" cd but I think this one would work just as well. I got my best friend into Tool by playing him this cd and since he has a been a fan. Just buy this cd even if you don't like Tool, you should like this. Come on!
Free Music Review: Proves Tool Is no Fad Hit: 5 Stars
The best thing about listening to Tool is the fact that, in the almost 10 years they've been around, they haven't molded their expectations to anybody. Tool isn't one of those fad "nu-metal" bands like "Limp Bizkit" or "Slipknot" or even "Papa Roach". Maynard is an insane genius, but that's what makes Tool work. Opiate is Tool's debut. It's only got seven songs (one is hidden), and they're all good. Each is hand-crafted by the demented minds of Maynard James Keenan and co., and it really shows on this one. The best songs on here are Part Of Me, Sweat and Hush, but the whole album is worth listening to. It's a quick listen, nowhere near the length of Undertow or AEnima. It's also a bit rawer than either album, since, like I said, this is their debut, and they had yet to get their sound perfected. There's also a hidden song after Opiate that's really quite funny. Opiate should be for die-hard Tool fans only. If you're familiar with A Perfect Circle, I would recommend this if you want to check out Tool. It's more accessible if you're a new fan of APC wanting to check out Tool. However, if you've never heard either Tool or A Perfect Circle, I would suggest you make Undertow your first purchase. I think that any Tool album is a good purchase, though. Remember, Maynard sold his soul to make a record. Let's make it worth his while, OK?...
Free Music Review: Early Tool=Great TooL Hit: 5 Stars
This album, while not as sophisticated (song wise) as AENIMA and UNDERTOW has some amazing songs on it. Don't buy this expecting an AENIMA or UNDERTOW or even LATERALUS like album, this is early TooL, though still in the stages of developement and not mature yet, still extremely powerful. This along with Aline in Chains's Sap is the best EP ever recorded. It rocks from start to finish. While not as long as later TooL, it leaves you at the edge of your seat. My favorite songs off it are Opiate and Hush. Already on this album TooL was questionning religion and obviously angry. When you'll hear Maynard chanting :"Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now. Open my eyes, blind me with your light now..." you'll be mezmorized. The lives tracks are especially well recorded (Jerk Off and Cold & Ugly). Opiate has it's own sort of dark side, it contains some of the most dreary music ever, which is perfect since it fits like a glove the themes of the album contains. You can't go wrong with TooL, each and every cd or unreleased track is worth owning. This is probably they're most agrrrrressssive album of all often compared to Korn's first. While this was simply a collection of TooL's heaviest songs at the time it's still worth buying but you'll probably enjoy this more if your already a TooL, a good place to start, though not the best.
Free Music Review: The Most Solid TOOL Album Hit: 5 Stars
Tool is no doubt one of the most talented modern day bands, but this album definatly displayes the best of their talents. The later TOOL albums have a lot of great music but also a lot of mysterous emptyness. Opiate definately is there most solid album, it open's with SWEET, a strong fast song that really draws you into the sound of TOOL. This album has your not so average guitar rifts acoumpanied by strong bass-lines and amazing drums. Maynard's voice is not as raspy in this album(probably because of all his screaming) but its a refreshing younger sound. HUSH is also a great song with strong vocals and hard hitting drums and bass. The two live songs on this album; COLD AND UGLY & JERK-OFF, are also very good songs, if you didn't here the crowd cheering you would hardly notice that it's live. OPAITE delivers good well composed hard rock or metal throughout the whole c.d. The only beef i have with album is that there is not enough of it. After listening to the whole thing you want more of it, all the reason why to listen to it agian, thus making this a great display of musical talent that keeps you wanting more. My advice is to buy this album for its small price, you'll find yourself repeatidly listining to it, a true bargian for the measly ten or twelve bucks you pay for it.
Free Music Review: The Beginning Hit: 5 Stars
"Opiate" is where it all started. Tool's first seven-track EP layed the groundwork for "Undertow" and "AEnima." While not nearly as elaborate or meticulous, "Opiate" shows Tool before they became really artistic and cryptic. This first effort is a loud, bone-crunching trip through the sick and rather humorous mind of Maynard James Keenan, who is quite possibly the greatest frontman of all time. Unlike Jonathan Davis, Fred Durst or any of those other easily forgotten, annoying wannabes, Maynard shows incredible range as a singer and as a lyricist. His messages deal with abuse, ignorance, religion, hate, as well as many metaphysical terms (46 & 2). Guitarist Adam Jones has an overflowing wealth of talent as does drummer Danny Carey, who might be even better than Dave Grohl. This CD is solid gold, and the tracks are short bursts of insanity, unlike the songs on Tool's other efforts, which can sometimes go on for nearly ten minutes. Tool is where all of the KoRns and Limp Bizkits get their ideas from. Totally original, groundbreaking, and socially as well as musically biting, Tool remains one of the greatest rock bands of all time. The only other band that can be ranked as high as Maynard and co. is Rage Against the Machine.
