Free Music Notes for OpiateFree Music Review: flawless as usual Hit: 5 Stars
There is no tool record which is not essential... and although Opiate stands as the shortest, with 6 tracks, any Tool fan without it should rectify that... as soon as possible. Although much of the progressive genius on Aenima in Lateralis had yet to develop, Opiate is still a hell of an album, perhaps the best EP there is. Sweat is a great opener, an acid inspired hard rocker with killer double kick courtesy of one Danny Carey... the bridge features Tool thrashing out, something to behold. Hush is a short and funk influenced song with hilarious lyrics railing against censorship... I wish they'd pull this one out live more often. Part of Me is perhaps my least favorite one on Opiate... maybe Tool's heaviest song, with lots of rapid fire double bass and stacatto timing. The next three tracks are more or less godly... recorded in a live situation at a house party, Cold + Ugly and Jerk-Off are total classics, and Opiate is well... Opiate. ...
Free Music Review: Can't Describe In Words Hit: 5 Stars
The guy who said that everybody and their dog likes Tool, you have to realize that isn't a bad thing. This is no fad like "Korn" or "Limp Bizkit". It is just that everyone knows how unbelievable and mind-expanding this band is. As I have said in my other Tool reviews, it is hard to choose between the 3 cd's. In fact, it is impossible, because they are each great for their own reasons. This album, the 6-song EP released in '92, is a compilation of what Maynard says were their "heaviest" songs at the time. Anyways, give this CD a listen if you already have Aenima and Undertow...this was the first Tool CD I bought, and I still love it even more than on the day I bought it. All the songs are great, but "Opiate" and "Jerk-Off" are my personal favorites...I have never seen Tool in concert, but I am hoping that if I do, they will finish the show with "Jerk-Off"...that would be great.
Free Music Review: I'm a punk fan, before I loved punk, I loved metal Hit: 5 Stars
Sure enough, before I like Descendents, NOFX, Rancid and all them, I liked metal and I really liked Tool. This is their first album, not their best, but still pretty freakin' awesome.1 - Sweat - Awesome song. This is the song that went on a soundtrack. Cool. 5/5 2 - Hush - Ya might wanna hush it when your parents around. Meaning, you hear "you-know-what-word" alot. Hard, metaly song. 5/5 3 - Part of Me - Not bad, but not the best. 4/5 4 - Cold & Ugly - It's a live song?!!???! They haven't released another freakin' album before it!! Good song, but how could it be live?? 5/5 5 - Jerk-Off - Live, again. Hmm. Can't figure that out. 5/5 6 - Opiate - Not good, but not bad. Ya know? 3/5 6+ - Gaping Lotus - This song totally SUCKS!!!!! Worst Tool song EVER MADE! Maybe I'm wrong....1/5 So, buy this CD. A good 6 songs. (Not 7! If you know what I mean)
Free Music Review: It's Tool. Of course it's five stars. Hit: 5 Stars
Whoa. I love it. The rush! This CD is awesome. Sweat is a great song, easy to remember, slightly more mainstream metal than you would expect. Hush is one of the most awesome songs Tool ever made, Maynard seems a little, I don't know, angry. In this cut. Part of Me is a good song, not as good as the first two, worst on the CD. Then Cold and Ugly, great, still not as good as the first two in my esteemed opinion. Then Jerk-Off. Man, this song makes this CD. Awesome intro, the rest of the song reminds me a little bit of "Hooker with a Penis" on Aenima. If you play guitar, learn Jerk-Off, it's awesome. Last is Opiate, completely different from the rest of the CD, great song, third best behind Jerk-Off and Hush. And of course Gaping Lotus Experiment, the weird half-unintelligable hidden track, It does sound like they're on acid. That's my review, read it, like it, and buy Opiate.
Free Music Review: Short But Awesome Hit: 5 Stars
Although this was Tool's first cd its one of the best EP's ive heard. In Opiate Tool introduces their dark, creepy sound w/ Paul D'Amour's muddy bass lines, intricate guitar work, and Danny Carey's percise percussion. All of this glazed w/ the soothing and sometimes brutal voice of Maynard James Keenan. Opiate is proof that an EP debut can still be successful.1.Sweat- A dark, brooding track w/ creepy lyrics and fantastic guitars. 2.Hush- An ironic yet heavy song. Has a nice groove to it. 3.Part of Me- A nice hypnotic song from the masters of hypnotic songs. 4.Cold & Ugly(Live)- An awesome heavy song w/ intense vocals and of course crazy drums. 5.Jerk-Off(Live)- Another intense epic...what can i say Tool rocks. 6.Opiate- Shows that Maynard doesn't like religion (although he was raised Baptist). Excellent music, the lyrics are pretty dope too.
