Free Music Review: Raw and intricate!
Hit: 5 Stars

1992 was a great year. Rage Against Machine released one of the greatest alternative CDs ever pressed with their S/T disc, Stone Temple Pilot put out "Core" and the grunge scene was in full swing, taking over the country.

Here comes a little band out of LA with a REALLY bad attitude that is very angry about something. Who would have thought a kid with a lisp, standing on a stage kicking out a "bob Marley wanna be mother f***er" from one of his shows would be where he is today. Yeah, that's Maynard James Keenan-- isn't it strange what 13 years can do?

So here we are, in the past, listening to an album that has since become a classic EP and I'm thinking that this, THIS is what I'm missing on my copy of Lateralus.

Raw, aggressive POWER! This is not the simplistic meanderings of a wanna be "mad at the world" numetal band, this EP has everything. It's technical, the riffs are great and Maynard's lyrics are as insightful as any other disc.

At the time this disc came out, I'm not really sure you could have compared it to anything else going on. While the band NOW wears its King Crimson influence on its sleeve, back when Opiate and Undertow ruled the world... I think you hear more of Henry Rollins' angry social awareness (maybe just a little more cynical than Rollins) and Jimmy Plant more than anything else on this disc, but Zeppelin was never this angry at anything in their lives.

A band that has silently influenced an entire generation of music (much like Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss) began that journey in 1992 playing warehouses and small clubs and appearing to be almost human. Who would have thought that this EP was the same band that produced Lateralus and Aenima?

Free Music Review: Jeez, take a breather man.
Hit: 4 Stars

OK so after being reccomended by Seemingly everyone who shares my music taste to check this band out, I finally decided to give this band a shot. And since I never actually start with a bands first album anyway I thought I might as well start here.
As far as the album goes It is a very good ep. Really creative, amazing intrumentation if you are into rapid time signiture, and tempo changes. But here are some points to consider.

1) Although the content is excelent. The sound quality kinda sucks (which is why I rated it four stars instead of five). A lot of reviewers claim that the live tracks sound so much like the studio ones. This is probably because the studio songs have so little added in the production process that it really sounds like one big live recording (in other words kinda thin).

2) Ok actually I hadn't heard any songs off this album or any tool songs really, and for the most part what I had heard of Keenan's vocals were on the cameos he did for other bands (I assume that now you will think that I know nothing, and say that this is not a helpful review because I havent been worshipping this band for years), and the haunting wail he presented there (Rage against the machine, deftones anyone?). Here his voice is definatly on the raw side (i'm not complaining his voice is still mezmerising, especially on sweat, and opiate.), so dont be all that suprised. But hey everyone's got to start somewhere.

3) MAN, THIS GUY IS ANGRY. I mean this guy makes your average angst rocker sound like that guy from linkin park. That and the lyrics, though very well thought out, are pretty dark (Example: me and him [god] both have our desires. WE both want to rape you! from opiate). Alhtough if your reading this review I doubt you care, especially if your a huge tool fan, just I wouldnt reccomend showing the this to the sensitive ( siblings, offspring, ect.). Like another reviewer said this is not a safe album.

4) As Far as the That negative reviewer who said this is just for overwieght, loaner, teenagers, who are jealous of thier prettier peers, for one is probably some loser who had his fun in high school, but blew off his education, and now works at some dead end job with a miserable life, and is also making a false generallization. I'm a teenager, but I'm not a loaner, i'm jealous of nobody, and i'm definatly not overwieght. As far as the guy who said he played it in his yoga class and he hated it, although I'm not blaming you for growing to peaceful to enjoy this album, it's sort of a no brainer that this isn't going to go over well in a yoga class.

So for those of you out there, who are open minded, and don't believe that "they will be damned for listening to an antichrist band." Then this album, though short, is a great buy. After all even harmless billy joel once said "i'd rather laugh with the sinners, then cry with the saints, you know the sinners are much more fun." An excellent choice for all you sinners out there.

Free Music Review: I LOVE TOOL!!!!
Hit: 4 Stars

I give this album 4 stars because it was only the start of them. Listening to this album and then listening to lateralus will greatly show you how they have evolved musically and lyrically. But overall, this was a great album for it's time. Tool stepped on to the scene showing that they had uniquesness and creative music. They just hadn't perfected themselves yet. If you wanna hear a young maynard just starting off and good music that was only gonna get better, then this is the album for you. Undertow was in the same era. I think Aenima was the album that made fans turn heads and raise an eyebrow. That was the album of change and when Tool figured out where they were going musically. Aenima officially and completely separated Tool from other bands. Opiate was just the beginning.

Free Music Review: We journey back to the early days of Tool
Hit: 5 Stars

I admit- this is a kick ass debut metal album from Tool. They started off perfectly and matured mentally and musically over the years dramatically. Maynard menacingly drives out brutal forces of power with his divingly compelling vocal chords, as does the rest of the band backing him up with their eardrum-crushing guitar riffs at booming speed. Maynard is( of course, DUH!)the frontman, Adam Jones on lead guitar, Paul D' Amour on bass and Danny Carey on drums. I am naming the guys if you are new to this band, but I'm sure most or all of the reviewers on this Tool page own more than just ONE of their CD's. Take my word for it, this one's a MUST HAVE! Pick it up ASAP and see for yourself.

Free Music Review: an awesome tool album... well not really an album...
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Tool's Opiate, and it is indeed their first recorded piece of music, and man is it good. When I first got this album during the summer, I listened to only it, and mainly because I think its extremely kick ass. Every song is good in their own way, and this is a much more agressive side of tool that most people arent used to at all. So here's a run down of the tracks.

Sweat- good song, 5/5.
Hush- another good song, I like maynards screams in this one... 5/5.
Part of me- one of my favorites on the EP... 6/5.
Cold and Ugly- these two songs... cold and ugly and jerk off want to make me see tool incredibly bad, then again... this was a while ago. These two songs are being rated together, 10/10.
Opiate- a cool song, i love the chorus, 6/5.
