Free Music Notes for Little EarthquakesFree Music Review: The Piano Goddess At Her Prime Hit: 5 StarsI'm a young girl, but I can't stand cheesy bubblegum pop artists, like Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson. (They have NO talent!)I like music with some substance, and the singer has to really be able to sing. I have all of Jewel's albums and I like her, but Tori Amos is my favorite. She is a super-talented singer and pianist. I currently possess three of her albums: Little Earthquakes, Under The Pink, and The Beekeeper, but I plan to acquire all of them. Anyway, I LOVE THIS ALBUM!! It has so much depth, and the songs aren't overproduced. My favorites are Crucify, Girl, Silent All These Years, Happy Phantom, Tear In Your Hand, and Little Earthquakes. I like Me And A Gun, but I only listen to it when I'm reeeallly in the mood for intensity. My favorite track is Girl. I love how high Tori's voice can climb, and I love the strings at the end. My second favorite is Happy Phantom. I think I may even like it better than Girl. The beat and the music sound like something out of The Wizard of Oz. I also love Precious Things. I love the whip-crack sound in the middle. I absolutely love to write, and I always write better when I hear the bridge!
Free Music Review: This is Tori's Best Hit: 4 StarsIronic that Tori Amos' first album remains her best, but after reading her story, where she was bottled up by the industry into "not being exactly herself" as part of some heavy metal outfit (!), I got it. The lesson here: be yourself, but being molded into something else sure seems to pay off in stored-up frustration-borne creativity.
The songs on this album are as calming-angry as I've heard, and Amos has found the way to ride both waves on the same board. She's been bitten, but nothing about being twice shy describes this collection of excellent tunes and musicianship... what can I say except that I just love grrrlz who play the hell out of their instruments and really feel them, instead of using them as simple props (as by Avril, et al, as part of their "songwriter cred" campaigns)... props to her, the piano is an extension of Tori herself.
If you visit anything Amos, visit this album first and revel in it, it's the real deal. I've heard some try to cop her piano and girl and warbly-voiced, psycho-lyrical approach, but why bother when the original version so easily outdoes them all? Time spent listening to this piece of work is its own reward.
Free Music Review: A Musical Earthquake Hit: 5 StarsTori Amos' first album 'Little Earthquakes' is stated to be her best album and it's not difficult to see why. Although I like most of her work, this album will always have a special place in my record collection. I guess it's because the emotional vibes are rawer and more spontanious than her later work. It really feels like her most personal album yet.
1. Crucify: Simply beautiful lyrics and one of the best songs on the album 8.5/10
2. Girl: Another great song. The strings are nice. 8/10
3. Silent All These Years: Not one of my favourites. I think it sounds a bit 'too sweet'. 6.5/10
4. Precious Thing: In my opinion, Tori's best song ever. 10/10
5. Winter: I guess this is my second favourite song of the album. Really emotional lyrics. 9/10
6. Happy Phantom: I don't think this one's very special, yet it's not a bad song. 6/10
7. China: I like this one. It's about a distance between two people and the lyrics work perfectly to realise this subject. 8/10
8. Leather: An average song on the album. 7/10
9. Mother: This song is more focused on Tori's piano instead of her voice. The chorus is beautiful. 8/10
10. Tear In Your Hand: My least favourite from the album. I don't seem to 'get it'. 6/10
11. Me And A Gun: This must be the most personal song on the album, also the one with the most explicit lyrics. It's chilling. 8/10
12. Little Earthquakes: For me, it sounds like this song represents the peace after 11 songs of turbulence. I really like it. 8.5/10
Free Music Review: One of Tori Amos' best Hit: 5 StarsLittle Earthquakes ranks around my fourth favourite Tori Amos album. It is dark, moving, very emotional and also abstract and experimental.
The album begins with Crucify, which is one of the most accessible songs on the album, despite its dark theme. It climbed to #15 in the UK, and was the last single from this album to be released there. The next song, Girl, is one of my favourites. It is a brilliant climax during the third verse which sended chills up my spine the first time I heard it. Like the pervious track, Girl is very dark, and tells us a lot about Tori and her life. Silent All These Years is the most famous song from the album. It is a beautiful ballad, which features another climax in the third verse. It is probably the most famous song from this album and the re-release got to #26 in the UK, and #65 in the US (only behind Caught A Lite Sneeze, Spark, and Jackie's Strength).
From the first time I heard song, I was sure that it would be my favourite song, and maybe my favourite Tori Amos song of all-time, as Little Earthquakes was the first Tori Amos album I had purchased. It is also great performed live (see the To Venus And Back album) and is a song about anger, sex, religion, and basically a lot of smaller things as well. Track 5, Winter, is my second favourite. It is a chilling ballad and goes for nearly 6 minutes, and peaked at #49 in Australia (only behind Cornflake Girl and Professional Widow remix) and #25 in the UK. Happy Phantom reminds me slightly of the early Kate Bush. It is a fun song about fun things - I guess its one of the few postive songs on this album.
China is my least favourite song. Except for the climax, the song doesn't really have anything that I really like about it - it is actualy a bit boring, although it was the albums second single, and got to #51 in the UK. Leather follows, which is kind of average for this CD, which means it definatly, is far from bad. Mother follows, and it is a touching ballad with only Tori and her piano. Tear In Your Hand grew on me, but now I like it very much. Like Precious Things and Crucify, this song is considered by many to be a Tori classic, but I think that these are some far better Tori songs than this. Youo have probably heard a lot about the acapella Me And A Gun, so I will go straight to the title track, Little Earthquakes. It is the longest track on the album, and my third favourite. "Give Me Life, Give Me Pain, Give Me Myself Again", she repeats towards the end of the song - like tracks 4 and 5, his song is a masterpiece.
Therefore, not everyone may like this album as it is very dark and inaccesible at times, although it did get to #14 in Australia and the UK, and #56 and 2x Platinum in the US. It also went Gold in the UK. In my opinion, Boys For Pele, From The Choirgirl Hotel, and To Venus And Back are a little bit better than this album, but Little Earthquakes is a common favourite album from a fans point of view.
10 / 10
Free Music Review: tori, tori, tori! Hit: 5 StarsTori Amos-Little Earthquakes (1991) When I first saw the music video for "Silent All These Years," I was blown away. I had never seen such beautiful imagery. Director Cindy Palmano had perfectly captured Tori's faerie-like quality on camera. It was also like nothing I'd ever heard before: just a girl and her piano. At the time, I was only listening to hard rock, and this seemed a revolutionary new sound (at least for MTV). When I finally borrowed the cd from a friend, I read all the lyrics before I actually heard the music (I was on my way to the airport). Never had I read such introspective lyrics before; songs of hope and despair, love and loss, pain and anger. The first time I heard the touching ballad of lost childhood, "Winter," it nearly drove me to tears with its sweeping string arrangement. "Precious Things" rocked as hard as anything I'd heard that year. The highly confessional "Me and a Gun," a five minute a capella song that deals head-on with her traumatic rape at gunpoint, leaves you feeling emotionally spent. This album never fails to move me when I listen to it.
