Tori Amos gives her all with no avail on the opener "Crucify". "Silent All These Years" is beautifully orchestrated as if its part of a movie scene with the violins' appearance. The chilling "Winter" is about a girl standing on her own and her father's wishes that she'd love herself as she loves her. Tori tackle unfamiliar grounds as she sings how she'd be when she dies on "Happy Phantom". "China" is good for a silhouette as she speaks of both the country and the dishes. For a hint of a classic jazz, Broadway theme the voyeur subject of "Leather" still fits the direction of this LP. On "Mother" she reaches new heights as she spreads her range calling out to her mother. Even attempts to conform to pop / alternative forms, Tori take it a step farther with "Tear In Your Hand". Maybe the most difficult song and subject matter, she speaks of her rape in detail on the accapella "Me And A Gun". The title track concludes this album with a more victorious battle theme to the distant sound of her vocals to blend with the sounds. This could also be renamed Big Earthquake. |
