Free Music Notes for Tales of a Librarian: A Tori Amos Collection (Bonus DVD)Free Music Review: Spectacular Tastes of Tori Hit: 5 Stars
Tori Amos is one in a million. I'm so overwhelmed that I gave into temptation and surrendered to her music. Thanks to her college Sarah McLachlan, but Tori is more expressive and more constant.
This, as a new fan, is a great taste of Tori, it really makes me want to get the rest of her albums. I already now own her first three albums. The album starts of with a stunner "Precious Things", in my opinion Tori's best song, so much emotion and aggression and passion is conveyed through the lyrics, music and vocals.
Other songs which dragged me onto Tori include: her "Winter", "Pretty Good Year" -heard it on "Under the Pink", the poignant "Playboy Mommy", "Silent All These Years" and the amazingly reworked "God". I am glad Tori decided to do this type of compliation as it exemplifies what type of artist she is, instead of just her poppy hits, however, though it's suppose to represent her career and style it misses out "From the Choirgirl Hotel" and "To Venus and Back", with only a song from both. Very dissappointing since those 2 albums are one which recieved flawless reviews from "Rolling Stone" website.
I highly recommend this starting CD for any new fans like me, anyone who loves Sarah McLachlan or Alanis Morissette. I also have begun loving Bjork, as well as a bit of Fiona Apple, K.D. Lang and Portishead. Getting into the Adult R-rated-contemporary Pop and Trip-Hop styles. Bye It, I wasn't disappointed at all.
Free Music Review: A Perfect Introduction to Tori Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a Tori Amos "ears with feet" since I first heard Little Earthquakes so many years ago. When I first heard about this project, I wondered how Tori could ever select 20 songs to represent her Atlantic records career. I think she did an amazing job, though of course there are some omissions, the main one being "Caught a Lite Sneeze" from Boys for Pele. I also wish she could have included something from the Y Kant Tori Read era, perhaps a studio version of the reworked "Cool on Your Island" that she did on the Scarlet's Walk tour.
That said, the songs here are chosen with care, and all are remixed/reworked, with four new recordings (two brand new songs and two re-recorded B sides).
Tori has never sounded crisper. The reworked tracks from Little Earthquakes especially stand out. The original recording sounded a bit muddy, but now these songs sound crystal clear and make me wish the entire Little Earthquakes disc could be remastered. The only real "miss" in the disc is the inclusion of the dance remix of Professional Widow vs. the album version.
The bonus DVD is also a nice addition, it includes 2 Dolby 5.1 remixes, 3 live recordings from soundtracks, and 2 instrumental versions of songs (over the menus). I wish the DVD contained more materil, but then that probably would have boosted the price of the collection so I understand why this compromise was made.

Although I own the majority of the songs on "Tales of a Librarian", I was still anxious to buy Tori's first best of collection. Obviously this collection completes Tori's previous record contract with Atlantic Records. Being the avid Tori fan that I am, I picked up this cd today after work. The problem with greatest hits/best of compilations is that not everyone is going to like what the artist (or the record company) chooses to put on the cd. I was more than satisfied by Tori's choices of songs. Keep in mind that this only includes songs from Tori's years on Atlantic Records and won't include songs from Tori's latest masterpiece "Scarlet's Walk". I was a bit surprised to see that Tori only included one song from "To Venus and Back" and instead Tori chose a few b-side (or unreleased) tracks. No big deal though. I love the remix version of "Professional Widow". I used to dance to the club remix of that song back in my college days. I still get chills whenever I listen to the brutally honest "Me and a Gun". I thought it was a great idea for Tori to remix and remaster her songs because they sound the way that the should have sounded to begin with. I'm glad to see that Tori included a couple of tracks from my personal favorite Tori album "From the Choirgirl Hotel". This Tori fan was not disappointed with "Tales of a Librarian".
Free Music Review: Good Starting Point For A New Tori Amos Listener Hit: 5 Stars
I saw a couple of Tori's CD's at a Wal-Mart, enough to spark up curiosity. My first exposure to her music was her live Video of a benefit concert. This actually bored me, but I decided to give her a second chance and listen to this project. I'm glad I did.
For those who have not seen my profile or my other reviews, I am coming from the perspective of a songwriter and of an ordained minister (Fundamentalist). I was not able to follow her lyrics and can tell she has religious and philosophical themes, but am not sure if they are compatible, different, or antagonistic to mine. "Crucify" does seem to speak about dealing with shame, for example; I'm one that believes shame is useful if based on a specific action with a specific resolution, and harmful if not accompanied with reason or resolution. I'm not sure if she is dealing with harmful shame, or condemning shame across the board.
Tori Amos is very creative, and the packaging of this project is exhibit A. She has a listing of the Dewey Decimal System, and then catalogs her songs according to the subject.
Overall, I enjoy her sound. I don't know how to label her music, and I consider that a good thing. Another reviewer said that a greatest hits compilation is not always the best intro for a new listener, but said that this is an exception, and I agree 100%.
Free Music Review: Tori Amos's Autobiography Hit: 5 Stars
I only have Tori Amos- little earthquakes, boys for pele, and scarlet's walk. None of the songs from Scarlet's walk or Strange Little Girls appear on this album because of the different record labels and money issues. This c.d. is released on Atlantic, while Scarlet's Walk was released on Epic. At first I thought it was because she thought the songs were a dissapointment. Well Little Earthquakes has been my favourite album so i lean towards their songs, but i've discovered really good tracks from other albums..the tracks i like best from to worst- 1. Precious things- i've always liked this song 2. Crucify- same as above 3. Way Down- 30 seconds longer, it's really relaxing.. especially the songs around it (spark, and the techno professional widow) 4. Jackie's Strength- The chorus repeats but this song is beautiful.. she sounds so painful when she things this. (make me laugh, say you know...) 5. Bliss- This song's great especially the chorus, seems like she's running away 6. Playboy mommy- this song sounds like she's about to cry. It's about her miscarriage, it's so sad because her voice just sounds so depressed but trying to move on. 7. Angels- A new song, it's catchy, but slow at first 8. Silent All these years- nothing particular 9. Winter- same as above 10. Cornflake GIrl- Where's the key rabbi? 3.
