Free Music Notes for The Beekeeper

Free Music Review: A very healing record (for me anyway)...
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll put it out here right now: I don't always understand Tori Amos. But that has always been an appeal for me, makes me work harder to understand her. This was the second Tori album I purchased (the first being "From the Choirgirl Hotel") & I have to say that this one ranks as one of my favorites.

I find this album carries a vibe of romance, knowledge, understanding, & forgiveness. It comes off as a very "healing" record.

Many have written this off as an attempt to go "Top 40", but really don't see how just because she shifted her musical focus. The emphasis on this record seems to be the melody & requires the listener to continue to play it in order to "get it". There is a soft & almost warm afterglow to each song, which some could call a "sheen". I see it as making a record that just is able to open up to more people & isn't so inpenetrable.

Many reviewers have stated that certain songs sounded better after a second spin or so.
For me those songs would be tracks such as "Mother Revolution", "Ireland", & "Goodbye Pisces" to name a few. These songs slowly open up lyrically & musically to reveal a beautiful tapestry of inner thought & meaning, something Tori excels at.

Highlights that grabbed me from the beginning, the first five tracks all sounded extremely awesome upon first spin & have gotten better with each play.

Now that I've had a chance to read her book which coincided with this album & purchase all the rest of her albums, I find this album to be a bit more upbeat. Which for me is a good thing since I'm drawn to music which can be a bit too intense at times.

What I'm trying to say is that if you like music that is good for the soul & continues in the vein of Ms. Amos' emotionally confessional works, then this album is for you. Give it a try.

Free Music Review: Unlike most previous Tori. This is some hot stuff!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok, firstly I'd like to say that NONE of the reviews I've read of this record come close to doing it justice, let alone prepare me for this astounding piece of music. Scarlet's Walk was a rather sobering return to the traditional songwriting of Little earthquakes-- some good tracks, several were quite beautiful. But god where's the unabashed Hot Mama i fell in love with on from the choirgirl hotel and To Venus & Back. Well she's back, in the Beekeeper-- she's just gotten a little older, and less angry... but once again t's clear the passion and sense of goofyness have not left for good--- something I was definitely fearing. The Gospel Choir usage is hot, and the B3 organ puts in a sort of almost 'Doors' feel, on tracks like "Witness"-- definitely f___ng awesome song, complete with the London Community Gospel Choir.
Other favorite Tracks: Parasol... pretty song; but also kind of funkified/tribal, or something.
Sweet the Sting... very sexy. (THIS ALBUM IS SO VERY SEXY)
The Power of Orange Knickers... a clever jab at the american "terrorist hunt" and how arbitrary and brainless it is, etc.--- beautiful song with gorgeous deep male purr resonating underneath her voice (Irish singer, Damien Rice).
Barons of Suburbia, General Joy, Mother Revolution: all interesting, and fun to listen to... "Mother..." is really slow, but really jazzy-- this is just an attractive, and intriguing record.
Ireland: sounds like almost jimmy cliff, or something... totally fun, and completely unexpected.
The Beekeeper (track 14): intense, lyrically hard-hitting. the closest thing to the psychological and sonic depth found so much on To Venus and Back, and "choirgirl." ... all around, very powerful song, with a great electronic pulse beneath.

LOVE this Record, can't get enough!!

Free Music Review: Ambitious work by a Remarkable Artist
Hit: 5 Stars

This new tori album is interesting in that it seems to gently invite you to listen more than it demands to be heard.

I've been reading a lot of reviews and comments by others - and as one can expect from any new tori album, there's a wide variety of opinion on this latest effort, the beekeeper. 19 tracks, and one more on the bonus dvd in the special edition. It's a lot to listen to in one sitting.

So yeah, 19 tracks. it's complex. 19 tracks that subdivide into six "gardens" of 3-4 songs each. Each garden has its own theme: rock garden, desert garden, roses and thorns, etc. Within the booklet, the lyrics are segregated by their garden-specific section. On a whim today, I rearranged the playlisting to match the gardens. It made for a smoother flow of the album, and I got to hear some tracks that were sort of lost in the shuffle near the mid-last part of the album on earlier listens.

I have to say that I do like it. While generally the music is a bit more laid back than some of her earlier works, the old fire still burns brightly. The lyrics are as potent and tori-style subversive as ever. Some people would say it's one of her more "accessible" albums, "accessible", of course being code for "it shouldn't scare off the casual listener". There are a lot of hooks in this album, and I've caught myself singing little snippets quite a lot.

In her lifetime exploration of the female psyche through mythic archtypes and her beloved bosendorfer, sometimes it's hard to keep up with Tori's work. Like all fine works of art, her music appreciates in value over time. I grew into Boys for Pele and To Venus and Back, and I get the sense The Beekeeper is subtle and challenging in its own way. It will be another album that continues to reveal Sophia for quite some time.

Free Music Review: The Power of Orange Knickers
Hit: 5 Stars

Tori is happy, Yes!, this album is different, pretty much different to past delivers from Tori, she sound a lot more happy now and this is nice , "the beekepeer" is miles away from "little earthquakes" or "boys for pele" or "from the choirgirl hotel" wich were more melancholic and sometimes darker albums of course with that sense of beauty she provides to every one of her "friends" the fascinating personality of Tori Amos takes different forms between productions and she manages to keep her audience interested doesnt matter how many years we listen Tori, we always are willing to listen what she offers.

This time the absolute presence of her Bossendorfer is no more, it is still there, but in the 19 tracks of "The beekeper" never quite dominates, instead a very well balance of instruments fill the songs in a deligthfull way for the perception of the listener.

I must mention that "the power of orange knickers" have reminicenses of "past the mission" from "under the pink" doe to the duet in this ocassion with young promisse Damien Rice, this is a great song , "Mother revolution" is another great track, "cars and guitars" "witness" the whole album have a good vibe.

Its important to keep fresh and offer something different (without going to the extreme naturally) Tori Amos understand this , specially if she have plans to be with us (their fans) all life , like Joni Mitchell for example that have been with the youth of the 60s and now that same fans over the middle age still enjoy recent Mrs. Mitchell albums and i would like to think that Tori Amos will be with us for many more years and when im 50 years old ill have 20 or 30 of her albums (same i wish with Sarah Mclachlan) that would be cool.

Free Music Review: Don't buy this if you hate good songwriting.
Hit: 5 Stars

One obnoxious reviewer of this album on Amazon stated, "If anyone gave this album 5 stars, than they aren't a credible reviewer....."

I hereby sacrifice all credibility and urge you to buy this album.

I was shocked to read some of the reviews on Amazon about this project. I think it mostly consists of listeners that overreacted & wrote their review after listening to this CD for the first time. In my opinion, there are only two Tori albums that have enough catchy hooks to like immediately: Choirgirl & Little Earthquakes. All of Tori's other projects require more attention to the details of the lyrical and musical metaphors. The Beekeeper is one of these. If you're not willing to do this, I wouldn't recommend writing a review about how you were too ignorant to recognize that Tori really has moved forward in her art with this project.

While there are somber, introspective songs on this album, there are also attempts at jazzy & bluesy beats and a different attempt at writing lyrics. For example, "Ireland" and "Hoochie Woman" definitely showcase Tori's attempt to be a bit more playful with her words and music.

I'm not going to go through every track & tell you how great it is and why I think so, but I would definitely recommend that you buy this and listen to it yourself. It's a 19 track CD.... I would say that Tori stepped out of the traditional Tori Amos style about 6 of the 19 tracks. Even if you don't like these 6 tracks, that's still a full album of the good stuff you were waiting for. Sit down & listen to the music while reading the lyrics. You, too, will give up all credibility and review this project as a 5 star album.
