Free Music Notes for Through the Looking GlassFree Music Review: Many think it's just a cover album......it's not ! Hit: 5 Stars
Indeed, you have 11 songs written by other people, but not just anyone. We're talking about Bob Marley, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, just to name a few. This cd came out here in Hong Kong back in mid-October, about the time of its release in Europe, and way before the US. Since then, I've listened to it countless times and I have no doubt in my mind that TOTO's versions of these songs surpass the originals in every way, from the arrangements, sound effects, the mixing, to the band's musicianship, talent and vocals on these tracks. Steve Lukather's guitar playing is mesmerizing and Bobby Kimball's voice is stronger than ever before, simply unbeatable. I have been a fan of TOTO's for 20 years and though this might not be my absolute favourite TOTO album, it sure is another outstanding album by a top-notch band. It just gets better with each listen and yes, there is so much to learn musically from listening to this cd. This album is a must-buy for all TOTO fans, for everyone who likes the original versions of these songs (you're in for a very pleasant surprise !) and for those who may not have followed TOTO's music in the past, but are keen to learn what a band with some of the best musicians in the world sound like. You will not be disappointed by this one !! All the best to TOTO and fellow TOTO supporters worldwide. Let's look forward to more great music for many more years to come.
Free Music Review: You thought you knew Toto? Hit: 5 Stars
So you thougth that you knew Toto huh? Well not until you have heard Through The Looking Glass. When I heard of Toto doing a CD chock full of covers I was a bit apprehensive I must say. I thought uh oh. This is the beginning of the end for Toto. Now, having heard Through The Looking Glass I can honestly say, I was wrong. This album with maybe one or two exceptions is classic Toto. Toto's ability to go beyond the original artist's vibe is nothing short of amazing. I absolutely loved Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage in the 80's. I have fallen in love with this track all over again and don't get me started on Stevie Wonder's Living For The City. This was musical genius new and having heard this song covered many times over the years by many different bands, I think that Toto got it right. What a great, hard driving rock and roll tune this is. Stevie should be proud! I don't think the Toto as a band is for everyone. Those that don't enjoy a band with tons of talent and unbiased creativity should stay away from these guys. If however you really like to hear a band stretch you should own this CD. It may be the best thing you buy all year.
Free Music Review: TOTO-LY AWESOME!!! Hit: 5 Stars
To sum this album up in just one word, WOW!I have to admit, when I heard that Toto's next album was going to be an album of all "cover" tunes I was skeptical. As I was listening to the short sound clips that previewed the record I was, to say the least, disappointed yet optimistic as a long time Toto fan. I bought the album and with-in seconds of playing it all my fears and doubts were replaced with an unbelievable satisfaction! This album is absolutely awesome! Quite possibly Toto's best work to date! Toto faced the difficult challenge of taking well known songs and putting their touch on them without losing touch of the originals root sound. Job well done!!! Toto has created an album full of the best arrangements and musicianship I have EVER heard! With this record your sure to have everyone in the room "movin' and groovin'" and singing along with the songs we loved for years. How are the guys of Toto ever going to follow this one up? I think this time guys you made yourself one big mountain to climb if your ever going to top this masterpiece!!! My hat's off to you once again Toto!! Dan Beasley
Free Music Review: The World's greatest cover band Hit: 5 Stars
It always seems a long wait between Toto albums, so as their UK record company have not scheduled Through The Looking Glass for release until February 03, Amazon came to the rescue. I had no details of the album content, didn't even bother to read the sleeve notes when it arrived. So it was a complete and pleasant surprise to discover an album of cover versions of unparalleled diversity. Reggae, rock, pop and jazz are all represented, every track performed with Toto's brilliant musicianship and superbly produced, with a quality of sound worthy of reproduction on even the most sophisticated hi-fi equipment. The key is that although Toto stamp their own sound on each track, all songs are performed with exactly the same feel as when recorded by the original artist. You already know these tracks, but they are being performed by some of the best rock musicians in the business. If Cream had recorded "Sunshine Of Your Love" for the very first time in 2002, this is the way it would sound. For those looking for a collection of new Toto songs, hard luck. I for one am far from disappointed.
Free Music Review: PURE ART! Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great album because it shows how the masters can make cover songs ALSO. Despite the fact that are just covers, the way they play them is just amazing so i totally disagree with the two people who underestimate this album. In every song you can hear a group of masters showing just part of their magic with their instruments and voices. Bobby is singing great, mike, david and simon are as usual: AWESOME; and of course Steve Lukather, what can you expect but pure art. He gives a "bonus power" for every song making his guitar speaks by itself. I hope they release a new album with new songs soon. They took the challenge to make covers and the result is a master piece. Buy it now, and if you want to hear PURE toto buy every cd of them specially TAMBU, Kingdom of desire and Mindfields, you won't regret.
