Free Music Review: music for your soul

To take an idea from a song on They Might Be Giants' "Flood" CD, these songs could put a little birdhouse in your soul. I have been listening to several Townes Van Zandt CDs for at least a year. This is the one that is brilliant enough to support my desire to keep finding new messages for my soul in the songs he wrote. I have been listening to the song "Pancho and Lefty" since Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard made that the title song of an album about the crazy problems confronting addictive personalities. Their album's main emphasis was on reasons to quit that don't outnumber all the reasons why. One of the best lines from Townes Van Zandt on that album was, "The dust that Pancho bit down south ended up in Lefty's mouth." Death, dreams, and what all the Federales say play a big part in that song. Singing it softly with a guitar late at night last weekend, I thought it sounded good, and I won a bit of respect from the man whose guitar I was playing. It made the guitar sound good.
I don't do "If I Needed You" as often, but it is a wonderful song which came into Townes Van Zandt's head while he was dreaming. People who believe that dreams can be turned into reality like he woke up, wrote down that song, and was able to play that song again when he woke up in the morning, have something that philosophers like Kant have been dismissing as merely fictions for hundreds of years.
"For the Sake Of The Song" expresses a basic reason that he felt he was on this earth. The images include an attempt to describe some girl, so I keep remembering "She" as the beginning of a line, but I don't sing this song enough to know how it goes. The main reason I listen to the CD is so more of these songs will stick in my mind. The pleasure of listening is gone too soon if my brain is not able to repeat what is worthy of great praise on its own.
Of the rest of the 17 songs on this CD, I am most familiar with "Waitin' Round To Die" and "Tecumseh Valley." I wish I knew the other songs better. They are performed well on this recording. The songs I don't know contain so much that the titles mean less to me than they should. "To Live Is To Fly" supports the idea that he was a bird, "both low and high." Two parakeets are mentioned (Loop and Lil agree?) in the song "If I needed You." Souls know more about this kind of thing than people like Kant could ever admit.
