Free Music Notes for Rear View Mirror

Free Music Review: Essential.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have both this album and Live at the Old Quarter, and believe both recordings are essential for Townes fans. I won't repeat all the superlatives about Townes or this album, save to say that they're all deserved.

The instrumentation on Rear View Mirror is more prominent than that on Old Quarter, which works very well for some songs. In my opinion, RVM contains the best versions of "White Freightliner Blues," "To Live is to Fly," "Pancho and Lefty," "For the Sake of the Song," "No Place to Fall," and several others. It's Townes Van Zandt, so the emotion is definitely there, in the lyrics and in the performance. That being said, I feel that Old Quarter is a more "personal" album -- it gives a sense of what I'd imagine a Townes Van Zandt performance was actually like. His singing also seems more expressive and heartfelt in Old Quarter, which really sets those versions of "Tecumseh Valley," "If I Needed You," "Waiting Around to Die," "Lungs," and others apart.

Some have mentioned the production issues: "buzzing" and other background noise. Yes, they're prominent on many songs, but I don't feel they detract from them in general (except possibly on "Tower Song").

Free Music Review: Best Townes Album Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

I have the TVZ album "For The Sake Of A Song" on vinyl that I bought new back in the day. I've been playing some of my old albums lately and was really happy to hear his music again; so I thought I'd see if I could find some other stuff by him. Well, this collection is great! As another reviewer said, some may consider it rough, but I love it. I've played this album over and over and love it. I may purchase another CD by him that I sampled on Amazon; "A Far Cry From Dead".

The fiddle in the back-up group on this release is super; kinda like Dylan's last good release (Desire).

To summarize; this is a great album that I would recommend to anyone that is into this type of music.

Free Music Review: REAR VIEW MIRROR - TVZ Records Re-issue
Hit: 5 Stars

Good news to see this great record back on the market!

Originally released in 1993, "Rear View Mirror" Is TVZ Live at his very best IMHO. With 17 of Townes' classic songs and a 3 piece band, Townes is in great form and you can tell he's having a great time interacting with his players. You can't go wrong with this one, it's timeless.
With the much improve mastering and packaging by TVZ Records this ones a must for your collection!

Free Music Review: Possibly my favorite Townes CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I just love this collection; it starts with the haunting "Pancho & Lefty" and includes many of Townes' best including my other faves, "Our Mother the Mountain" and "Tecumseh Valley." The tones are rich and the fiddle accompaniment of Owen Cody is very sweet and tastefully arranged.
