Free Music Notes for X (TEN)Free Music Review: Hit and miss...but the hits are certainly worth it. Hit: 4 Stars
I'm always hesitant when I purchase a Trace Adkins record. He's a fantastic singer, a great interpreter of songs. The problem is, he doesn't always choose the choicest material. He can record a terrific ballad ("Every Light in the House is On"), a geuinely sexy number ("One Hot Mama")...but he can also record utter trash ("Swing") and cliched redneck anthems ("Rough & Ready"). So when I listen to a Trace Adkins record, it's with a sense of trepidation.
X begins on a slow note: "Sweet" isn't horrible, but it's not that great, either. Other songs follow a similar suit, bouncing between tolerable ("All I Ask For Anymore," "Hauling One Thing") and just god-awful ("Hillbilly Rich"). Adkins is on record as saying he records the cheesier songs because a country album needs them; thankfully this time around, he decided on some weightier material as well. Aside from the downers just mentioned, the rest of the album is pretty decent, even at times fantastic. "Marry For Money" is a witty little number; "Better Than I Thought It'd Be" and "Let's Do That Again" revolve around a couple of nasty grooves; even "Muddy Water" and "Happy to Be Here" are elevated by oustanding vocal performances and lyrics that manage to remain basically uncliched.
The true album highlights, though, occur in some of the ballads. "Sometimes a Man Takes a Drink" is absolutely stunning; as is the bare-bones delivery of "I Can't Outrun You": a haunting, emotionally-ripped vocal set against a piano and strings. The surprising number here is "'Til The Last Shot's Fired," a nice, non-biased (at least until the bridge) look at fallen soldiers that echoes Adkins's previous hit "Arlington" (but is actually a stronger tune, in my humble opinion).
So X (as in TEN) is a bit hit-and-miss; but, as will all Trace Adkins records, the "hits" tend to win out. This certainly features one of his finest performances ("I Can't Outrun You"), and some of the strongest material he's tackled in a while. If nothing else, this album--even the worst cuts here--show that Trace Adkins is one of the best, most evocative vocalists in country music today.
Free Music Review: i'm just happy to be here Hit: 4 Stars
Like many others, I'm a big fan of Trace's "You're Gonna Miss This". There are some more great songs on X that are refreshingly different. "All I Ask For Anymore" is a nice ballad about family, which Trace says is his favorite ballad he's ever done. He deals largely with songs about tough times such as "I Can't Out Run You", which is an acoustic song that is well done and haunting...with just piano and cello to go along with vocals.
"Till the Last Shot's Fired" is a powerful song that might be the highlight of the album. It's kind of a follow-up to "Arlington" - a somber solute to the Troops at War - and featuring the West Point Cadet Choir in the last chorus. The lyrics and music really are haunting and strong, and hit you like a bullet to the heart - especially the last chorus. You really have to listen to this prayer for peace to understand...it will most likely give you chills. Such a powerful and touching song that will effect countless amount of people.
The song that hits me the most is "Happy To Be Here"...a tune that Trace did not originally plan on including in this Album. It speaks of near death experiences, and how he is so blessed to still be alive. "Wrapped in Your loving arms, just like an answered prayer". It's a very touching song - and one that should be a big hit - because it is a song that many people can relate to. I know I can...and the lyrics really put our lives on earth into perspective - we should all just be happy to be alive, forget our little problems, and live every moment like it might be our last.
Free Music Review: We love you man! Hit: 3 Stars
This album is not his best, but if you are a Trace fan, you will appreciate this one. With Marry For Money and Muddy Water, this one is definitely worth it. A few other pretty good songs, along with a few duds. Trace, we love you man, but this ain't no Dangerous Man or Songs About Me.
Free Music Review: Terrible POP music Hit: 1 Stars
This man has ruined "country" music. He is pop and has dollar signs flashing in his eyes. I can't stand hearing his name and country music in the same sentence. Hank would commit suicide if he could hear this today. I hope him and Kenny Chesney will take Tim McGraw and all go hang out on Kenny's island so Randy Rogers, Jason Boland, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Wade Bowen and many others will get the respect they so desperately deserve. Trace is nothing but a marketing stunt and I have ZERO respect for all the worthless, mindless EXPLICIT his label has put out in his name. Support live, real music. Not this. I expect to see him and Britney Spears on tour together sometime real soon!
Free Music Review: Love Trace Adkins, But This CD Isn't For Me Hit: 1 Stars
I see that this CD is getting great reviews, and I am a Trace Adkins fan, but I was totally disappointed. I couldn't find a single song that I enjoyed, and am very sorry I bought it. I'll just stick with the other CD's he done and toss this one out.
