Free Music Notes for Out of the Woods AlbumFree Music Review: A very accomplished album Hit: 5 StarsI have always liked the voice of Tracey Thorn. I first came upon her in 1984 with the "Eden" album of Everything But The Girl. I have liked and even loved almost everything she's done since. Her voice is distinctive, fragile, yet strong, graceful, cool, poised and, yet, she sings with great conviction and emotion. I've always thought of Tracey Thorn as a Jazz singer who has branched off into different, modern, directions. I think she must have listened to a lot of Tania Maria at some time in her life! [possibly before the EBTG "Eden" album?] Tracey Thorn could easily and convincingly cover "Don't Go" from Tania Maria's "Made in New York" album or just about any other Tania Maria song. However, Ms Thorn has more important things to do - i.e. singing her own songs and telling her own story, her way.
Out of the Woods is a superb and classy album. I really mean that. Ms Thorn's approach to her music here is very good and original. She has taken two paths here and I think that this works extremely well and it presents us with many possibilities.
Some of the songs here are accompanied by orchestral strings and piano - and note: no drums or percussion. Other songs are accompanied by a keyboard player on a synthesizer, using a drum machine. Both approaches work extremely well for the voice of Tracey Thorn.
This is a forward looking album. No guitars, no desperate urges to recreate the past, no nostalgia, no sentimental attachments to history.
What we have instead is a very thoughtful, expressive, colourful, reflective, mature and complex set of new musical statements of a woman living in the 21st century, unafraid to do, think and say new things.
The "style" of the album? Tracey Thorn's style.
If you felt you were "dudded" with the latest Norah Jones album, buy this and it will restore your faith in the new music of 2007.
I have only one minor complaint: the running time.
