Free Music Review: Bonham's best work and then some
Hit: 5 Stars

There's no doubt I'm supposed to not love Blink The Brightest as much as I do, but I love Blink The Brightest. Its songs have been there at the right moments the past few years, they're conventional, they're exactly the type of songs a former Lillith artist is supposed to record after a love affair and marriage gone sour, they're occasionally leaden with cliches, and it just doesn't matter - I still love them. Beginning with "Something Beautiful," Blink The Brightest establishes its longing, as well as its undeniable reliance on the type of formless wanderlust women in the 90's have been falling back on for a decade or more - but it's also a wonderful pop song, brimming with passion and charm. With "I Was Born Without You," Bonham's sly humor and propulsive baritone remind you of her personality, and from there, not a song lags - not "Whether You Fall," the soft ballad of "whether you fall/ means nothing at all/ it's whether you get up" platitudes, not "All Thumbs," the bombastic breakup ballad, not even "Wilting Flower," which should be an embarassing art-feminist ballet of awkward "look aways." It all works, without a bad song there, and charming with its sweetness and with Bonham's undeniable passion in even the generic moments. And that only elevates the best songs to dimensions you REALLY weren't expecting - I'm thinking of "Take Your Love Out On Me," full of desire and sensuality, or "Did I Sleep Through It All," which is more wry, cynical, philosophical, mournful, fun, and lovely in 3 minutes than all her previous career combined. All of that makes me think even her sorta-famous work in the 90's was a precursor for Blink The Brightest, which probably has earned 1/10th of that already small audience - too bad, any of her contemporaries, famous or sorta-famous, would be proud to make an album of this much true feeling.

Blink the Brightest Poster

Tracy Bonham, the acclaimed singer and songwriter who burst onto the national stage with her #1 Modern Rock hit, "Mother Mother," is back with her most compelling album yet, 'blink the brightest,' featuring 12 of the most captivating, resonant songs she has ever written. The multi-instrumentalist, who earned a Gold record and two Grammy ? nominations for her debut CD, plays violin, piano, keyboards, guitar, and vibes on the new album. "This record goes back to my core, to the music that I really love, incorporating classical influences, rock and pop, sometimes an r&b or soul flavor," says Bonham. In search of diverse soundscapes, Bonham co-produced the album with Greg Collins, who has engineered and mixed records for U2, No Doubt, and Matchbox Twenty, among others, and Joey Waronker, who has drummed for REM and Beck.
Lilith Fair darling Tracy Bonham doesn't have a lot to prove, at least not to anyone who paid attention to 2000's excellent Down Here, but on Blink the Brightest she barrels full-bore through a clutch of carefully chiseled songs as if the world had forgotten her. On some, it's with the force of a Jonatha Brooke--gentle but juiced with wisdom--while on others it's with the brewing intensity of Fiona Apple or the knowing poise of Joan Osbourne. Derivative, though, these tunes are not: "And The World Has the Nerve to Keep Turning" is a dazzling slice of outrage churned in a patient, pretty voice, and "Naked" reveals itself in bold, artful strokes. Where Bonham is at her best, though, is on the experimental-sounding "Wilting Flower." As her voice pulls away from the music and momentarily flutters adrift, you can't help suspecting that there are a lot of smart music buyers in America ready for an explosion of tightly wound female talent, and that this is their disc. --Tammy La Gorce
