Free Music Notes for Tracy Chapman

Free Music Review: This album is perfect.
Hit: 5 Stars

When I was a little girl (that wasn't all that long ago, as I'm only in high school now) my mom and dad played this tape endlessly. I loved it, and I still do. Actually, I at first bought this album for nostalgic reasons. When I listened to it, I realized why my parents had played it until the tape broke (literally)! Tracy Chapman is one of the most amazing musicians I have ever heard. This is my favorite release of hers. Her heartfelt lyrics, which often express her political views, would be enough for me, even if her voice and musicianship were terrible. They're not. Tracy has a rich, soulful voice, and the music is fabulous. To sum it up, Tracy Chapman is an extraordinary singer and songwriter, and you should buy this album!

Free Music Review: Only category I can wedge Tracey into is "GREAT"...
Hit: 4 Stars

I feel like I'm invading her privacy when I hear this music, that I've taken her journal and laid it open. These are real, remarkably commonplace emotions, what lies buried beneath the dramas that we create in our heads. "Fast Car" is one of those songs that you wish you had written yourself. The guitar melody is it's own character, and echoes Chapman's keen, intuitive lyrics.

It's too bad that the term "artist" applies to every mass-produced boy band, heartthrob flavor of the month. Chapman is a throwback to a time when artists earned their title honestly. I hope that this vulnerability keeps her in circulation for years to come.

Free Music Review: Honest, Direct, Heartbreaking...
Hit: 5 Stars

At the time of this album's release, much more attention was given by the black community to NWA's Straight Outta Compton and Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, but this debut release has aged far better than both of them.

"Behind The Wall" is the most accurate description I've found of what it feels like to be a police officer answering a domestic disturbance call. The frustration at not beng able to really help the people involved, as well as the platitudes that often have to be uttered in place of honesty,-all these feelings are captured here with graphic accuracy. Like a nightmarish tape loop, the cycle of violence sometimes seems to be endless.

Like violence, racism is rampant in America today. But we have to remember that there are many good cops on duty as well as those who embaress the job and themselves. Tracy Chapman takes a giant first step in the path to better cultural understanding with this incredible album!

Free Music Review: Impressive Debut
Hit: 4 Stars

Tracy Chapman's debut album contains three all-out, undeniable classic songs - "Fast Car", "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", and "Baby Can I Hold You," the latter being one of the most subtle, beautiful songs I've ever heard. The rest of the album is also quite enjoyable and is arguably the album that brought about the serious attitude that developed towards female singer/songwriters in the 90s. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Peter Gabriel, Crowded House, Sarah MacLachlan, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, or other artists that deliver heartfelt, honest songs that also happen to be catchy.

Free Music Review: Absolute perfection

I genuinely don't think this disk could be any better. There is not a single song on here that isn't a work of art. I owned this on tape initially, but I had to get the CD because the tape was getting worn out, because I listened to it constantly - particulary to Baby Can I Hold You, Why, and Talking About A Revolution.

Chapman's voice is stunning, particularly on the a capella Behind The Wall, which never ceases to bring a chill down my spine. I always thought I didn't like folk music, but Chapman has made me reconsider that belief. Her lyrics are meaningful, and the collection of songs come together to form an overall feel, a mood, that is extremely moving and empowering. She exemplifies how music can bring people together and be an impetus to change, ala the greats like Bob Dylan. Make no mistake -- this is a political album and Chapman wears her left wing leanings like a badge of honour. If you can't tolerate her political views, you probably won't like the album as much as her core fans. That said, her voice and the music itself may make it possible for you to give it at least an intial listen. Chapman is more than a singer and musician - she's a poet, and her message is one that I believe we all need to heed.

I highly reccommend this album to everyone. Even if you don't agree with her politics, hopefully she'll make you think. At the very least, you'll be listening to one of the purest, best voices in modern folk/r&b/soul around today.
