Free Music Notes for Christmas Eve and Other StoriesFree Music Review: Amazing Christmas Album Hit: 5 Stars
WOW! I just saw the live show 12/15/00. Those of you who are Christian and also like to rock out must see TSO! Even if you aren't Christian and you just like to see awesome musicians this show is excellent. The themes are mostly based on the birth of Christ our Lord and Savior. I missed out last year and was lucky to get some tickets this year. They had an eight piece string section with a drummer, lead electric guitar, jazz guitar, bass guitar, 2 keyboards, and several vocalists. They blend traditional Christmas melodies with rock in a way that sounds incredible. Besides the predominantly rock elements you also get some blues, jazz, and soul thrown in. It really is spectacular. They have a tremendous light show and they all came out after the show to say "hi" and sign autos. If you have never heard of them them you should start with their first CD called "Christmas Eve and Other Stories." The CD's are good but the live show reaches a higher level. They also have a CD based on the works of Beethoven which I haven't heard yet but I'm sure it will be just as good. Anyway, I can't rate the live show high enough and it is a must see if you get the chance.
Free Music Review: CLASSIC Hit: 5 Stars
This is a classic cd that you will not tire of! I actually removed it from my Christmas storage this year in October (couldn't wait for Thanksgiving). There are several qualities to this cd. First, the arrangements are incredible. They are agressive and powerful and often combine themes from several songs into 1 (Carol of the Bells and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen form Christmas Eve/Sarajevo). To pull this off, T.S.O. incorporates phenomenal musicianship to back these arrangements. There is more to this cd than just great music. There is a Christmas tale which weaves the songs together into one work. The section of this story that always gets to me is from 'The Ornament' to 'This Christmas Day'. Finally, what brings it all together is the choice of vocalists throughout the story - all fantastic. The emotion that is heard in these songs relating to the part of the story they are telling is as if they are living the story and we are observing it. Just listen to the vocalist of 'This Christmas Day' and I believe you will understand. I literally get chills at the end of this song. All in all, this will be a favorite for years to come. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: One of my favorite holiday traditions Hit: 5 Stars
This CD by TSO is easily my favorite holiday album. Paul O'Neill and company certainly know how to make a song, and that's what's important here. Listenability is one of the most important components I want in my music. Will it stay on my CD player from beginning to end? Do I like all of the songs? Is there a variety of themes and moods? Will it take me through many emotions? The answers to all of these questions are a resounding YES! on this disc. If you like dramatic and sometimes subtle but always engaging music then this should be in your collection. The arrangements are a superb blend of classical and rock. The vocals on Star To Follow are a treat. Mad Russian's Christmas is a fun, frentetic chase. The beauty of piano and female solo on Prince of Peace is stirring. There are so many highlights on this disc I can't list them all. If you are looking for your favorite artist singing Silent Night AGAIN, this disc is not for you. This CD is an inspired composition of original songs, sometimes interjected with a familiar christmas theme, but woven in a new and exciting way. If you enjoy this CD you will love Beethoven's Last Night. Highly recommended also.
Free Music Review: Great for holidays, and all year Hit: 5 Stars
By now you no doubt know what this CD is, a concept album telling the story of an angel who is charged by God to go to Earth and bring something back that represents humanity. Along the way, the angel encounters war and loss, hope and potential fulfilled. The music ranges from light choral to hard rocking, with the famous Christmas eve Sarjevo instrumental that gets lots of radio play around the holidays. The CD is engaging throughout, with powerful music and a feel-good ending. Some reviewers have claimed that it is sappy, but it's a holiday album! What did you expect from a Christmas album, gloom and despair? The Ornament, An Angel Returned, and This Christmas Day are personal favorites. If you have a chance to catch TSO in holiday concert, do so. My wife and I saw the concert this past year, with the music being supplemented by a narrator who tied the pieces of music together, telling the story of the angel's trips around the globe. It's beautiful and moving stuff, with a hard-rocking edge.
Free Music Review: Always moves me to tears Hit: 5 Stars
Every song on this CD is brilliant, but my favorites are the story between "Ornament", "Old City Bar", and "This Christmas Day". The story begins at "Ornament", when a man is decorating the tree and praying that his runaway daughter will be protected this Christmas and that she might come home. The last verse of that song (which, for some reason, are not included on this CD) switch to the daughter's perspective and we see that she is standing alone in the snow. She cannot find a star to wish on, but she wishes on the neon lights of a nearby bar. The song "Old City Bar" follows, where the bartender is informed by a child (or perhaps an angel?) that there is a girl standing alone outside in the snow. The bartender puts her in a cab and sends her home to be with her family on Christmas. "This Christmas Day" is the story of the daughter returning home.
The same story is told on "The Christmas Attic" DVD. All three of those songs move me to tears every single time I hear them.
