This compilation is one of my favorites so far. Since I got involved in the hunt for Global Music that appeals to me. With a journey that started after I first heard the Dhol Foundation and has continued from India to Africa and Australia, this album brings much of that into perspective. While not every track is GREAT, this is a GREAT album.
It was on this compilation that I first heard Issa Balayogo. For that alone, I highly recommend it. The Niyaz remix is a fine example of how more traditional sounds can be mixed with the modern to create something new and very appealing that sits on the ledge of a new type of music.
This should be a big seller - and maybe it will be when the world wakes up.

Traveler 06, a Six Degrees Collection, shouldn't be confused for something it's not. The project's breakthru marvel 'Arabian Lights' set the bar so high that any follow up effort would fall well short. Using the phrase 'apples to oranges', O6 presents a 'next generation beat' version of music, centering not on the Arabian peninsula's version of 'new wave', but of the rising-ly mainstream Central Asia (India) music scene. The only comparison to Traveler 06 is music from the Indian beat duet Midival Punditz. Stuff any work of theirs into iTunes with the Six Degrees sampler '06, categorize it as 'World'....
....and share it. This is the future of club/party music in the U.S.

While I love just about everything the Six Degrees crew puts out, this is by far the most "banging" of the annual Traveler compilations. The emphasis on the '06 edition of this series is on HEAVY Dance-floor beats! With remixers like Dalata, Banco de Gaia, Junkie XL and Temple of Sound putting their own spin on the Six D posse, how could this be anything but slamming? (3 & 1/2 stars) I've generally enjoyed the Traveler compilations and also have a lot of respect for the Six Degrees label. They (6D) basically restored my faith in the remix concept with the amazing Latin Project remix of Bebel Gilberto's "Aganju" a couple of years back. Normally I consider remixes to be a bit of a ripoff --- i.e., when I buy a new CD and see that it has extra tracks, I think "Cool." Then I see they're just remixes, it's more like "too bad, they're not actual new songs..." As for this new Trav. 06 disc, it's got a few fine remixes, but also several more that fall into my familiar "too bad..." category. Among the former (good remix) songs are the opener, an eerie yet percussive Junkie XL take on Niyaz's song "Dilruba," as well as the contrast of airy vocals and swollen drum beats on Shift's "As Far As I Can See" (a Da Lata mix). The "too generic" group of songs includes the Banco de Gaia remix of MIDIval Punditz, a boring effort that uses just about every remix cliche in the book. Overall, though, this is a relatively interesting CD. The good outweighs the bad, just barely.
