Free Music Notes for Traveling Wilburys (2 CD / 1 DVD)Free Music Review: The ultimate Wilbury anthology! Hit: 5 Stars
It was only recently when I read in a review for one of the old editions of the volumes 1 and 3 that a reviewer was wondering if these albums would ever be re-released someday. This new release comes as the ultimate anthology as it includes volumes 1 and 3, and even though volume 2 never existed, an extra DVD included in this set has been labeled as disc 2.
There is little to say about the volumes 1 and 3 that has not been said already by other reviewers. Just think of an album made by a band formed by George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, that is what you get here!
In volume one, the genius of these five friends hiding behind glasses and using alternate `Wilbury' names made one of the best albums in rock history (several music magazines have selected volume 1 as one of the best albums ever); volume one includes classic songs like Harrison's `Handle with care', `Rattled', Orbison's incredible `Not alone anymore', Dylan's well remembered `Tweeter and the monkey man' and of course `End of the line'. Volume one has been complemented with two previously unissued songs, `Maxine' and `Like a ship', two songs that were obviously added to make the release more attractive and complete.
Volume three (a volume two was never released) has always been recognized as the small brother of volume one, mainly because it was recorded after Orbison's death and also because of Dylan being a more prominent piece, a rather unfair valuation as it contains great songs and it's an incredible follow up to volume one. The album is dedicated to the memory of Lefty Wilbury (Orbison's Wilbury name). The powerful `She's my baby' that opens the album can be still heard today and you won't notice the passing of the years on it. Other classics included are `Inside out', Dylan's `Deadly sins', the incredible `New blue moon' and of course the `Wilbury twist'. Extra tracks included are `Nobody's child' and the Wilbury version of `Runaway'.
Both albums come remastered and sound better than ever, but the real highlight is the DVD. The documentary called `The true history of the traveling Wilburys' clarifies once and for all how the project started and what caused the reunion of these five super stars (there were many stories about it that are proven incorrect on this documentary). The recording sessions are shown as well as rehearsals and alternate versions of some songs are briefly shown. The death of Orbison (Lefty Wilbury) is also mentioned when the band decided to continue with the recording of the video for `End of the line' and the idea of using his guitar came up. All the promotional videos are also included: "Handle with care", "End of the line", "She's my baby", "Inside Out" and "Wilbury twist".
If you've never heard any of these albums don't hesitate and get them, if you already own them, the extra tracks and the DVD are worth the purchase of this set.
Free Music Review: Wilburys Travel Once Again Hit: 5 Stars
The Wilburys are coming! For a long time we had suspected the return of the Wilburys on disc and finally, it has surfaced and is available on this 2 CD and 1 DVD collection. Here you find one of the most feel good classic albums ever recorded, the stellar and memorable "Volume One" from 1988. Their follow up minus Roy, "Volume 3" is also included and viewing the DVD you can see five friends having a blast recording all of this along with their 5 promo videos for the singles.
Roy and George may no longer be with us today but the music of the Traveling Wilburys has never died and is always fresh and welcoming when the odd song would appear on the radio but now at long last we have the opportunity thanks those near and dear to the band to blast these discs and feel good again.
The first disc features "Volume One" the ten original tracks that we all know and love plus two bonus tracks, "Maxine" and "Like A Ship". Personally this is one of my all time favourite albums and the enthusiasm and joy these five friends bring to the recording is so infectious.
Have a blast hearing Georges slide guitar and Bobs harmonica co-exist in perfect harmony on "Handle With Care", Tom's dry vocal on "Last Night", Bob's hilarious delivery of "Tweeter and the Monkey Man", Roys masterful vocals weaving in and out of the songs and the galvanising force of the underappreciated Jeff Lynne.
The second disc is that DVD with priceless home footage of the recording of the album. Many thanks to Olivia and others for giving the world access to this footage. It was so nice seeing Roy's enjoyment of working with the Wilburys and his death was a tragedy.
Man those videos are so much fun but where is George's rockstar work on the microphone in the "Inside Out" video? Is there alternate videos out there?
Last, but not least is the followup album minus Roy, "Volume 3". Whilst not the album Volume One was, it was still a joy to listen to. Dylan seems to dominate on this recording. There are some fine tunes here, remember how to do the Wilbury Twist? instructions are included in the little booklet with the set it will sure leave you feeling "Inside Out".
Have fun with this collection. The Wilburys travel again!
Free Music Review: The Traveling Wilburys...At last ! Hit: 5 Stars
Plastic Ono Band o Wings?, Imagine o Band On The Run? Yoko o Linda?
Free Music Review: She's got a body for bowling, got a head for pins Hit: 5 Stars
I live that that line a lot. These albums are what the docter ordered for a breezy autumn day because of there cozy atomsphere and style. The second one - volume 3 - stinks a little but that is because Roy Orbison died and there is not enough George Harrison. But there is one song dedicated to Carrie Fisher of Star Wars, called "You Took My Breath Away" and I think they really sound like they mean it.
There are famous musicians and then there are George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty. I don't say Jeff Lynne because even though the sucess of ELO, no one still really knows about it. He hides his face behind a mask of fascial hair that looks really stupid. Especially for a man his age. He is the worst singer in the group.
Jim Keltner is a great session drummer who is the drummer on both albums and deserved a "wilbury's nickname/alter ego" alogn the lines of lucky and so on. Shame on the group for putting him in the background especially when Roy Orbison was only on one of the two albums and got a special name even though Keltner was on every one of the albums (I think ever track).
As for the songs themselves I have to say that my favorites are "Where did you Sleep Last night" from Volue 3 and also "New Blue Moon" from that same album. "She Is My Baby" is a real rocker and it features the only part where George Harrison does not play lead guitar, too bad because when I first heard it I thought that it was him. Oh well his awesome solo on "Poor House" makes up for it. On the first volume, I have to say that my favorite is the fun and bouncy "Last Night" sung mainly by Petty. I also "Handle With Care".
What I don't like on the first one is "Magarita" which is a big waste and just pads the album a little. I always skip it. Oh yeah and I don't like "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" because of the "and the walls came down/all the way to h--" because it is too gloomy. But on volume three one of the ones I can't think of the name but Bob Dylan sings it. Something like "If She Belonged With Me."
With two records plus a dvd on one package (and I haven't watched the dvd yet) this is one heck of a value. I recommend it.
Free Music Review: Finally available after being out of print for way too long Hit: 5 Stars
Three years ago I snapped up "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" from a used CD bin, and I couldn't believe my luck, as both Traveling Wilburys CDs had been out of print for many years, for some incomprehensive reason, as those albums are a treasure of American music. Now finally comes the long-overdue restauration of that.
"The Traveling Wilburys Collection" brings the 2 albums, with bonus tracks, and a DVD. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1" (10 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) brings the beginning olf this super-star band, starting off with the irresitable "Handle With Care", originally contemplated as a George Harrison B-side for one of his "Cloud Nine" album singles. There is hardly a bad track on here: "Last Night", "Tweeter and the Monkey Man", and my all-time favorite "End of the Line" are among the highlights. "Margarita" is the only weak track. The (previously unreleased) bonus tracks, "Maxime" and "Like a Ship" are outstanding. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" (11 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) even goes one better, in my book. From the stellar opener "She's My Baby", to "Inside Out", "Where Were You Last Night" to the rousing and irresistable "Wilbury Twist", it is just magic. The bonus tracks "Nobody's Child" and a cover of "Runaway" are quite nice, but not as good as the regular album tracks. I know that many music fans are not as fond of "Volume 3" due to Roy Orbinson not being part of it, but for me, it is the better, tighter, sounding album of the two. I absolutely love "Volume 3".
The DVD starts with a fascinating 40 min. documentary of the band's early days, bringing a blow-by-blow visual account of how most of the first album's tracks came about. What strikes is how great all those super-stars got along, egos were clearly checked at the door. It also brings the 5 videos the band did for the 2 albums, nice but not as good as the documentary. The liner notes are not that great, primarily a fictional history of the Wilburys, but no lyrics of the songs or detailed recording details. But that is a minor quible. This collection is a terrific slice of Americana, whose reissue was LONG overdue. Essential in every way.
