Free Music Review: Even Better Than I Remembered!
Hit: 5 Stars

Almost didn't buy this today, but at the last minute, I thought, "Why not?". Let me tell you, I'm glad I did. The music is just as fresh and shimmering as it ever was, perhaps even more so with Rhino's remastering of these two CDs. Plus, the fact that they have been out of print for the past several years, with original copies now being highly collectible adds to the appeal.

I used to have the first CD, but at the time, I didn't listen to it much. I mean, I liked it, but it wasn't one I kept going back to. Could be that at the time, I was younger and this music needed more time to grow on me. You would've thought a former Beatle, the ex-leader of ELO, a legendary folk-rocker, a Sun Records icon and a contemporary (even now) artist would've swayed me, but I guess I was under the influence of hair metal (some of it I still like, by the way). But after I sampled a bit of the DVD, I'm like "Oh yeah! Sounds better than ever!" And the price was right, as well.

However, it's also a bit sad, seeing and hearing Roy Orbison and George Harrison, knowing both are now gone. In fact, Roy passed away just after the release of the first CD, as well as his comeback album. He was on the verge of a career revival. But despite all that, don't let this stop you from enjoying some of the best music these guys have ever done. You can tell these guys were truly enjoying themselves, because it shows in their music as well as in their videos.

So get this now, while you still can. And please, "Handle With Care".

Free Music Review: A Great Tribute
Hit: 5 Stars

It's rare that I'll review such a mainstream release, saving whatever advice I can offer for the more eclectic and off-the-main-drag artists I gravitate to. And this is not so much a review (of which there are plenty of well-detailed here) as it is a rave, a coyote gleeful howl of appreciation.

I got my copy of this boxed set earlier today. I watched the DVD first, then played the 2 CDs straight through a couple of times. What an evening! The Traveling Wilburys playing loud (remastered to pristine, crisp beauty in this new boxed set), with that jangly 12-string, acoustic-guitar-orchestra wall-of-sound and the delightful earnestness of a bunch of musical superstars leaving their egos at the door and having such obvious, genuine enjoyment making frivolous, fun, toss-away masterpieces, and maybe some of the most precious moments of 2 now dead (Roy Orbison and his best-in-rock voice shining so bright one last time, George Harrison having the time of his life and weaving his sweetly idiosyncratic slide guitar throughout), and who could have predicted what a great-sounding chorus the disparate voices of Bob, Tom, George, Roy, and Jeff would be? All while reading Stephan Nachmanovitch's book "Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art" and picking up "The Sound of Water: Haiku by Basho, Buson, Issa, and Other Poets" to randomly open it to any one the priceless poems so lovingly translated by Sam Hamill...

OMG, does it get any sweeter?!

Free Music Review: Too Bad It Is The End of The Line
Hit: 5 Stars

Was very very happy when I heard of the release of this set.I had purchased Vol. 1 on cassette, the best in my opinion and Vol. 3 on cd. All I really wanted to do was replenish my cassette for a cd on V 1. Than I heard of the dvd and the extra tracks.Really enjoyed the extra tracks on both discs, especially Maxine & Nobody's Child.Always loved the videos and was happy of the selection.Of course,V 1 had Handle With care,Headed For The Light and End of The Line. But after re-introducing myself to the album, discovered again,Dirty World,Not Alone Anymore and Margarita. An exceptional album.
As for V 3,I wasn't so crazy for it,except for Inside Out and The Wilbury Twist. But as the same with V 1,was re-introduced to the other tracks and didn't realize how good of an album it is. She's My Baby,The Devil's Been Busy,Poor House,New Blue Moon and Cool Dry Place.I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoyed the albums more after their re-release. Me,being a big fan of Petty's,Harrison's,Lynne's productions and ELO and Dylan's turned me on instanlty when the original release came out. The only artist I was familiar with a little was Orbison, but that eventually changed.
So,I would recommend this to any new fans, which I'm sure there will be,who are fans of the artists mentioned. I would highly recommend picking this set up. You won't be disappointed and say ,I wasted money.

Free Music Review: Relax and Enjoy - It IS about the Music!
Hit: 5 Stars

Don't listen to the hype or to the critics. When you look at Rock's recorded history (sorry 'bout that) the names behind the Wilburys didn't produce a lot of bad music. What they produced was frequently the best of the moment and every once in a while, they gave us nearly timeless music. And both of the albums in this 3 disk set give us that gift: a place and images in time and something timeless. Watch the train riding video and imagine Roy in that rocking chair. Whatever other deficiencies there are on the DVD, and there are some: spotty sound, jumpy shots and cuts, and no few almost corny 80's touches, it is worth the journey to get on that train.

Yea, everyone says album 1 is the best with Roy Orbison and that may be true but number three (two) is so close I think it is a wash. I grew with three of these guys. They grew up with me. Two came along later and belonged to the group regardless of age. It was and is the music that binds them together. It is the music that was the heart of a friendship. It was never about fame or their names or what could have been and were in other places and times, colossal ego clashes. When the Wilburys gathered, it was all about the music. Thank God.

Listen. Watch. Enjoy. It's not perfect but that's a tough label to get. The Traveling Wilburys set is close enough for me.

Free Music Review: A Joke Turned To Gold
Hit: 5 Stars

There are many bands that tout themselves as super groups, but The Traveling Wilburys are one that actually lives up to the billing. George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and the late Roy Orbison originally got together to cut a song for a b-side to the "This Is Love" single off George Harrison's 1987 comeback album Cloud Nine. The song was "Handle With Care" and it was deemed to good to be just a b-side ("Breath Away From Heaven" ended up as the "This Is Love" b-side), so they decided to record a whole album to go along with the song. The resulting Volume I released in late 1988 is a fabulous collection of songs that contain some beautiful harmonies, flawless production and some sharp and witty writing. The guys are clearly having fun even going so far as to take on Wilbury pseudonyms (which for some reason were changed for the next album) and include a history of the band. Due to the sudden death of Mr. Orbison shortly after the album's release, a potential tour was scraped and it looked like the Wilburys would be a one time affair. But the group got back together for 1990's wryly titled Vol. 3. Though not as tight as Volume I, it offers many of same pleasures and has aged well over the years. The deluxe package combines both albums and a dvd and brings back these long out of print albums.
