Free Music Notes for Traveling Wilburys (2 CD / 1 DVD)Free Music Review: Legends at work and play! One of the best buys of the year! Hit: 5 Stars
I had forgotten how good the Traveling Wilberrys first album was. It was a joy and revelation to hear it once again in great sound. All 12 songs are excellent plus you get two bonus tracks on each album which are keepers too. Just hearing Roy Orbison's god-given voice is worth the price of admission. You also have George Harrison singing lead on a few cuts and Dylan's "Tweeter and The Monkey Man" is as good as anything he's done the last 20 years plus Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are all in great peak form too. What is enjoyable about this is that you can tell the boys were having fun doing this. There is a whimsical, laid-back, lighthearted good-feeling about this music. The egos don't get in the way and it seems there is genuine respect for each other's legendary talents. Jim Keltner, a premier session drummer is also aboard. Next, there is a 42 minute DVD showing how they got together and also shows the boys at work and play with videos of featured songs. The second CD is from the second album (Vol. 3) which is just as good as the first even though Mr. Orbison had passed away after the first one was released. This is the best purchase I've made this year as far as sheer enjoyment. 2 CD's = rated A+ = DVD = rated A. Like a fine wine, this release will only improve with age.
Free Music Review: Puts a smile on my face every time Hit: 5 Stars
The guys sound great: what else can I add to the other reviews? There is so much good-natured testosterone infused fun in this collection. I'd forgotten what a cleverly hilarious song "Dirty World" is, and I can't help but smile every time I hear "Handle With Care" because I can hear the smile in George's voice! But now, with this reissue, Volume One is even better with the addition of the Latin-flavored, bright guitar-driven "Maxine." I wonder why they didn't put that song on Volume Three when it was originally released, in place of one of the Dylan-centric songs? In my humble opinion, Volume Three suffered just a tad not only from the absence of Roy Orbison, but from too much Dylan. Brilliant lyricist as the man is, too much of his voice gets on my nerves. Part of the magic of the first album was how all of these very unique and stylistically different musicians blended. I felt this blend was missing from the second album. But "She's My Baby" and "The Wilbury Twist" make up for my nit-picky little complaint. I adore George Harrison, so it's natural that I would love the DVD, but my oldest son was cracking up right along with me (Tom Petty and George were especially witty) so I'm not just being a starry-eyed fan.
Love those Wilburys!
Free Music Review: Superb Package Hit: 5 Stars
I bought the original album when it came out in the late 1980's, but never bought Vol 3. This package reissues Vol 1 with Vol 3 and a DVD containing the videos for the singles and a short documentary as well.
To see and hear this supergroup on the DVD was emotional. George Harrison was always behind Lennon/McCartney in discussions about the Beatles but when he did things well he was amongst the very best. Now of course he's gone along with Roy Orbison as well. 'Handle With Care' features these two on vocals with Harrisons distinctive guitar slide guitar prominant as well. This is a magical track. I've been a long time fan of Orbison and his amazing voice and as one of the band says on the DVD to have arguably the greatest pop singer (Orbison) and the greatest lyryic writer (Dylan) in the same group was just incredible.
All the guys contribute memorable parts to both albums and whilst the second album suffers from the loss of Orbison (any album would) its still a fine recording. The DVD isn't that long but its certainly of historical interest, and one I shall watch again.
Enjoy the legends, we probably won't ever see a band like this again.
Free Music Review: The greatest supergroup of all time... Hit: 5 Stars
Usually these supergroups are tedious affairs. When a bunch of rock stars get together, the music is often mediocre, because of the individual egos of each member not allowing himself to be part of a group, or they want to show deference to the others by supressing their talents. This is neither. The music on these 2 volumes (I'm still searching for Vol. 2...last I heard it was in an ancient toilet esconded in the Himalayan mountains) is really amazing. The 21 songs on the original albums are all gems. There isn't one throwaway track. Vol. 3 rocks harder than Vol. 1, but I still love both. Favorite songs are Handle With Care, Dirty World, Tweeter and the Monkey Man (my favorite off of Vol. 1), She's My Baby, Poor House, and Wilbury Twist. The playing is masterful. And it has a real laid back feel to it, like it actually was fun for The Traveling Wilburys to make an album together. It has all the hallmarks of a Jeff Lynne production (which is a good thing), yet it feels like a real group effort. Some can argue it's Dylan's best work in the 80's. These are 2 wonderful albums which grow more and more wonderful everytime you listen to them.
Free Music Review: A Classic Hit: 5 Stars
I bought the Traveling Wilburys when it first came out back in 1988. At the time I always enjoyed the album but did not appreciate what a masterpiece it really is.
When you take 5 musicians of this calibur, two things will happen. The will get together and sell a million copies on their names, or they will make a great album. Fortunately the latter applies.
George Harrison was the main force behind this effort, but everyone contributed.
Now that Orbison and Harrison have passed the CD, means even more to us.
They purposely sat down and went back to basic Rock and Roll, 60's style and really came up with something.
I was elated to see it be released once again.
Highlighs include..Handle with Care, Last Night, The End of the Line and She's my Baby along with the Wilbury Twist......Thank God they got together to do this.........
The DVD also talks about how Harrison went about forming the group and how they wrote songs together on acoustic guitars.
What is amazing is how they did this in such a short this under "C" for Classic
