Free Music Review: Wilbury jam sweetness!

When George Harrison was flying high in early 1988 with a Top 10 album (Cloud Nine) and No. 1 single (Got My Mind Set On You), fans were clamoring for the "Quiet Beatle" to return to the concert stage after a 13-year absence. Sadly, George didn't hit the road for what would have certainly been a successful tour. But, instead, he jumpstarted a kooky concept band that works on every level.
First, Harrison hooked up with his Cloud Nine co-producer, Jeff Lynne, and buddies Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison to knock off a B-side to a European single.
Most knowledgeable rock fans know that session turned into the ear-candy hit single, "Handle With Care," and that merely lit the fire for this sensational collaboration.
Volume 1 is an album that never hits a lull or gets tiresome after repeated listenings. Dylan was in fine voice with "Dirty World," "Congratulations" and the Springsteen-esque "Tweeter and the Monkey Man."
Petty, who also enlisted Lynne to produce his solo smash album Full Moon Fever, sounds endeaving on "Last Night." Orbison's vocal talents are obvious throughout and Harrison sings and plays with relaxed confidence, and contributes tracks such as the lead-off song, "End of the Line" and "Heading for the Light," all outstanding and as good or better as the excellent tracks on 1987's Cloud Nine offering.
Jeff Lynne also can't be ignored, with shimmering backups and instrumentation as well as his 1950s-sounding "Rattled."
Unbelievably, both the 1988 Volume 1 and (after the untimely passing of Orbison in late 1988) the tongue-in-cheek followup (Vol. 3 in 1990) were out-of-print by the mid-1990s but thanks to the estates of Harrison and Orbison, this fantastic reissue is available (and after the first edition of the Deluxe version quickly sold out after its June 2007 release, Rhino rectified matters by changing the color of the box and reissuing it in November, again giving fans the chance to get it).
And if you haven't "gotten it" by now, what are you waiting for? Not only is the music great, there is a gorgeous hardcover book inside plus postcards and a Wilburys patch. The sturdy outer box is such that this should remain on shelves of music libraries for decades. And Vol. 3 also is a fun album to revisit, especially tracks such as "Inside Out," "The Devil's Been Busy" (with rocking sitar from Harrison) and the country stomp "Poor House."
There also are some nifty bonus tracks, two on each album. George's splendid, acoustic-driven "Maxine," Dylan's spiffied up "Like A Ship" and Lynne-Harrison's cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway" give the Traveling Wilburys Collection plenty of added value.
There also is a DVD, with MTV-era music videos (some have been edited or changed a bit, which I have a slight problem with) and an insightful, 20-minute documentary of how these music-business legends could forget their fame and fortune and act like regular people having a cup of coffee around the kitchen table and collaborating without ego games.
Listening to these great albums again, I can forgive Harrison for not touring in 1988 because of what he helped give us instead. It is so sad that Orbison died right after the first album started to rise to the top of the Billboard charts because it is probable that the Wilburys would have at least done a few concerts in early 1989.
That didn't happen. But these two albums did. I am so happy they again are available, hopefully for many, many years to come!

Deluxe 2007 three disc (two CDs + DVD) edition of the supergroup's albums featuring bonus tracks plus a DVD. The DVD features an amazing 24-minute documentary showing unseen footage of the Wilburys and their five video clips, filmed largely on George Harrison's home video recorder. Nearly twenty years after the creation of the band, and over a decade since the music was last available to fans, the music of the Traveling Wilburys is finally available again. Traveling Wilburys Volume 1 and Traveling Wilburys Volume 3 feature inarguably some of music's greatest singer-songwriters-George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan-as the iconic band the Traveling Wilburys.The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz
