Free Music Notes for Traviata (RMST) [Hybrid SACD]
Free Music Review: Older but goodie, and yes the conductor matters

This is a relatively old recording (early l960's) with what when then a cast of RCA reliables - Tucker and Merrill - and Anna Moffo(who had all too brief a career). It still has wonders in it. Moffo, though her voice is a bit too small, is intense about the text and its meaning, lyrical and moving. Tucker, though I suppose technically his voice is too large for the part, sings beautifully and Merrill, though not the greatest or more detailed interpreter of the part (as compared to, in their different ways, Gobbi,
Fischer-Dieskau and Warren) sounds beautiful and sings intelligently and somewhat movingly. But it all works, and it all works because the conductor, Fernando Previtali, loves the work and cherishes its lyricism and moves its line (His Forza del Destino, also on RCA is also wonderful). So while it doesnt replace the Callas "Lisbon" Traviata (no one on records sings Violetta as movingly as Callas) and Moffo lacks the tonal beauty of De Los Angeles' Violetta (beautifully conducted by Serafin); if you love Traviata, this is well worth having.
