Free Music Notes for Midnight MaraudersFree Music Review: A nice follow up to their classic, The Low End Theory
After creating a buzz for themselves after their solo debut CD, "People Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm" in 1990, A Tribe Called Quest took on all nonbelievers head on with the release of their sophomore disc, "A Low End Theory". While their debut did include classics like "Can I Kick It", "Bonita Applebum", "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" and "Description Of A Fool", "The Low End Theory" is really what put A Tribe Called Quest on the map. "Check The Rhime", which is probably their best song and single of all time, put ATCQ on another level. The way they mixed jazz with hip hop put them in another category. Out of all the Native Tongues which included De La Soul, Queen Latifah and The Jungle Brothers, ATCQ was getting the most pub. With classics like "Jazz (We've Got)" and the posse cut, "Scenario" with Leaders Of The New School, to follow "Check The Rhime", people who had no idea who ATCQ was, took notice. The only dilemma that they faced was whether or not they could follow up this classic 5 Mic CD with another banger. "Midnight Marauders" was released in 1993. The first single "Award Tour" answered all questions when doubters were wondering if ATCQ could follow up with another great CD. With Ali Shaheed Muhmammad on the boards, along with some occasional help by The Abstract Poetic and Extra P, Large Professor, ATCQ had another winner on their hands. This is what real hip hop is all about: Good beats and lyrics to supply the beat that is being presented. Phife became the perfect compliment to Q Tip's rhymes. He was allowed to have his microphone time as much as Q Tip was and the results were almost as good as "The Low End Theory". The 2nd single, "Electric Relaxation" is clearly the CD's best track. While "Award Tour" got their fans attention, "Electric Relaxation" made sure they stayed attentive. All I could remember hearing was, "Relax yourself girl, please settle down". Even if I had never liked the group, "Electric Relaxation" would have been one of my favorite songs. Q Tip and Phife go back and forth expressing how they want to "get with" a female. This is classic Tribe. From beginning to end, you have classic beats, Phife's braggodocio kind of rhyme and Q Tip's razor sharp precision. The whole CD is worth listening to. Believe me, there is no filler material on here. Other songs worth checking out are "Keep It Rollin'" w/Large Professor", "Steve Biko (Stir It Up), the 3rd single, "Oh My God", "Midnight" and "Lyrics To Go". Unfortunately this would be ATCQ's last classic CD. While they still did make good songs on "Beats, Rhymes, and Life" and on "The Love Movement", A Tribe Called Quest was never the same after this release. Their rhyme style became simplistic and the jazzy beats were replaced by the beats of Jay Dee and the Ummah, which meant Ali Shaheed Muhammad supplied less beats than usual. However, "Midnight Marauders" stands out because after "A Low End Theory", a lot of hip hop fans thought that ATCQ would fall off. They were very wrong. |
