Free Music Notes for JuxtaposeFree Music Review: Could of been much better... Dissapointing. Hit: 3 Stars
Tricky has again, even though he's 'not sad' any longer, dissapointed this loyal fan with juxtapose. Although there is an easily apparent accessability to this album that was absent from PMT and Angels..., it's short running time (32 mins) & it's obcenely high levels of bad music are enough to offend me. Track one starts off mellow and such.. pleasant. track two, bom bom diggy, displays one major source of irritaiton for me, Muggs. His voice being potentially annoying to most but not to myself, as it's his style of rapping that is like a cheese grater applied with violent friction directly to my inner ear canals. Contradictive is my favourite for this album.. She Said is a terrible track which displays the worst kind of track that tricky puts out.. and frequently does. It's awful, but not as bad as some. I won't bother describing it. I Like the Girls is only passable for entertainment value, and won't get any airtime on the radio, for fairly obvious reasons that I won't be able to mention on this website. :ahem: Hot Like A Sauna once again features Muggs (shudder) and a femme, whose vocals are even worse than 'She Said' & Muggs' rapping. Bad lyrics too. ("smoke some weed?" does that rhyme? noooo..) Tricky's costars absolutely ruined this track (one could say this cd) for me, and it was promising (had great intro). Call me, Wash My Soul & Scrappy love are all downbeat Maxinquaye style (almost) tracks that I greatly appreciate. The remix of Hot Like A ... is equatable to applying one's mind to the cutting edge of an operating circular saw. More torture? Thanks a lot. Overall, the album is a great improvement over past efforts (which were appreciated but unlistenable), allowing others' input to find their way into adrian's music was a nice touch, but i mean... euugh.. could of been much better. Next time find better costars, trick. I'll keep buying yer albums, but only if they get better, dammit.
Free Music Review: Switching gears with inconsistent results. Hit: 3 Stars
Tricky has reshaped his music again...manifesting into a twisted NYC version of Bristol trip-hop--stressing more on the hop than the trip. Juxtapose is courageous but not ambitious nor brilliant. Those accustomed to Marthine will be fantastically disappointed as she is not on this release. Instead, we have guest-producers and guest MCs who add dubious value. "Contradictive" shines as the albums best track, but tracks "She Said" and "I Like the Girls" are dumbfoundingly silly or stupid (particularly lyrically). Tricky appears to be reaching and clawing for meaningful lyrics--which started to show on Angels with Dirty Faces--how much more can he pine about his record deal? When compared to his earlier works, Juxtapose falls horribly flat and uninspired.
Free Music Review: Could be much better, but better than PMT & Angels Hit: 3 Stars
I liked this album, but it was way too short (32 mins) and it had a somewhat lacking feel to it. tracks like bom bom diggy, she said, i like the girls and 'hot like a sauna' start out pretty promising and fall apart completly shortly after. the metal mix of hot like a sauna is unwarranted torture. she said: this is the kind of track that RUINED angels with dirty faces. we don't need any more like this, tricky. take note. i liked the following tracks: 1, 3, 7, 8, 10. the rest are just blah or ... terrible. the fem vocals on hot like a sauna stink.. in fact, i'd like to edit that track down to only tricky's vox, 'cause the other two's stink.
Free Music Review: not the best tricky Hit: 3 Stars
I'm a die hard super Tricky fan. I bought Fifth Element because of him. I bought A Little Romance because he wrote a song about it. This CD is ok. I mean, it's Tricky, it's better than most stuff, but he's gotten really bad guest stars. I want to know one thing... where is Martina on this CD??? They work so well together. This is something I play at work and I find it to be more... "crowd pleasing". If you weren't a Pre-Milennium Tension fan, don't listen to me, because I loved PMT. Juxtapose was... eh...
Free Music Review: Juxtapose is a surprising departure from usual Tricky Hit: 3 Stars
This album is another example of tricky changing directions with each album he releases. What surprises me the most is the amount of very prominent guitar work. The guitar on "For Real" is extremely reminicient of Nirvana's 'Plateau' from their unplugged album. Some of the songs have junk lyrics, but not a bad job overall, once you listen to it a few times.
