Trip-hop is dead in 2002. Its brief streak of brilliance was spearheaded by a close succession of critically-acclaimed albums. But trip-hop has its formal limitations and there's only so much you can do with it before you fall into a blueprint. The sound and ideas at the time were novel, but like any good subgenre it was killed off by lesser copycats such as Sneaker Pimps and such. In retrospect, Tricky's "Maxinquaye" should be considered the heavy epitome of trip-hop's glory days. Massive Attack might have possessed a sheen sense of urban cool and Portishead pushed its emotional tortured diva game to its limits, but it was "Maxinquaye" that to this day remains a dark impenetrable release haunted by dark secrets. The album is preceeded by a eerie past - the death of Tricky's (b. Adrian Thaws) mother - which you can't deny that when deaths surround an album - it makes the album that much more three-dimensional (see Nirvana's "In Utero" or Notorious B.I.G.'s "Life After Death"). Morbid, but true. More than any other artist, Tricky has the ability to create an atmosphere out of scratch. On "Maxinquaye", the beats create a humid claustrophobic stench of gasoline and acid. It's been described as "post-apocalyptic" which is probably the most accurate single-word description - the music will invoke images of fallen buildings, shattered junk piles,dust curtains, and a sun that shines with the power of a dying flashlight through dense clouds. Pianos cry, flutes whistle, bells tinkle in a lonely wind, throbbing beats swell, and old souls lumber thorough the remains bemoaning some horrible tragedy. The songs themselves trudge slowly, with Tricky crawling through the dust and dirt, voice choked up with a chemical-induced rasp. Martine-Topley Bird offsets the ugliness, but even the gorgeous singing seems trapped within the living hell. There's not so much a conversation between Tricky and Martine as it just seems weird echoes of sexual tension. It's beauty in destruction - the way a gnarled black steel sculpture can seem ugly in its bent overburdned position yet all at once oddly disaffecting. This album puts hip-hop's samapedelic culture within a context - "Maxinquaye" invokes the past and casts them as ghosts amongst a barren world. Take a journey through Tricky's world where hell is around the corner and you might just find that the light is at the end of the tunnel.
