Free Music Notes for Trio II (Two)Free Music Review: Doesn't grab me. Hit: 2 StarsI thought Trio I was great and played it to death. Nothing here grabs me. I have owned the album for quite a while now and have never gotten into it. I don't like Western Wall either. Maybe I have lost the thread, but this does not sound as good as the earlier stuff to me.
Free Music Review: Trio II: mature female voices Hit: 5 StarsTrio II makes you realise how deprived we are of educated and civilized human voices. Ever since I bought this CD I've been listening to it. Hearing sing Linda, Emmylou and Dolly is like driving a Rolls Royce were as average radio-voices in compare to these women are less the tri-cycles. Blue grass, balads and country succeed each other perfectly. Every song is well developed. A deep bass-gitar underlines Linda's increasingly soulfull voice. Dolly has never before been so shaded in her lyrick-interpretations. The hardest songs are the ones Emmylou takes charge of and as a reward they will stock in your uncounciousness for always. Alison Kraus finally adds a non-stereotyped fiddle to the music and enlarges in this way the melodies of several songs.
Free Music Review: The Country/Pop Music Quandary...Ain't Solved Here Hit: 3 StarsI have just begun shopping for classical music--and have noticed that you can buy several hundred versions of certain pieces. Part of the conventions of classical music (and opera, though I would personally rather listen to paint dry)revolve around comparing performances of the same work. But what's a pop singer to do? Although the cover version is an accepted piece of work, this album really demonstrates the dilemma of recording the same songs in different contexts: people feel cheated. I found this an interesting album, but not as consistently wonderful as the first Trio album. I have also listened to the Linda Ronstadt "solo" versions of those 5 songs as well as the "Trio" take on them...something that is really fascinating to do. But the real difference between the two albums has to do with the quality of the songs themselves. Yes, "Blue Train" is a gorgeous song (and if you want to hear a version that is even better than here, then check out Maura O'Connell's original version on her "Blue Is the Colour of Hope" album--which is a stunner)and there are other fine moments, but the songs quite simply are not as tuneful or interesting or as well arranged as on the first Trio. But give the ladies a break for recontextualizing some of these songs on different cds. And open your ears to the differences...
Free Music Review: Thrilling Hit: 4 StarsI understand that about half the songs here were on Linda Ronstadt's "Feels Like Home" album and "Trio II" seems to be coming under a fair amount of criticism for that. Well, I don't own "Feels Like Home" so this complaint is a strictly academic one. What I do hear here is a great blend of three fine voices on material ranging from a Carter Family chestnut ("Lover's Return") to pre-pop sellout era Dolly Parton ("Do I Ever Cross Your Mind") to a Neil Young classic ("After The Gold Rush) to fine contemporary singer/songwriter fare ("You'll Never be The Sun" "He Rode All The Way To Texas," "The Blue Train" etc). This one may not be the knockout the first Trio recording was, but it is still might fine and a welcome addition to my collection.
Free Music Review: You Can Bypass This One! Hit: 1 StarsMost of the cuts are hashed over from Ronstadt's "Feels Like Home" Album. In fact if you listen to the two, most of the cuts on "Feels" already have Harris on them. Makes me just wonder if Parton went into a studio by herself and just dubbed her voice in ? A couple of words for the "TRIO", you had a faithful following that waited and waited until "Trio II" came out, we expected something as GREAT as before, instead we recieved a recycled Ronstadt LP. I Love you three ladies dearly, but I doubt if I would plunk down money for a "Trio III", and now there is just an album with Harris and Ronstadt on it- will we hear Parton dubbed in later for a "Trio III" fiasco? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
