Free Music Review: Trisha Yearwood Changes Her Tune
Hit: 4 Stars

Anyone familiar with country music today will give you his or her opinion about country-pop versus traditional country. Most dyed in the wool country fans will shout from the rooftops about keeping country pure. They'll tell you how an artist sells out when they make their first "Top 40" style record. They'll tell you "if it don't sound like Merle, it ain't country." Whatever.

That's the beauty of any art form, not just music. I wonder if Leonardo De Vinci ever got dissed by the art world for selling out when he changed styles? I doubt it. But when it comes to music, the die-hards of any particular style (pop, rock, classical, country, etc.) would rather die than acknowledge one of their own "crossing over". This seems especially true as of late in country music.

Trisha Yearwood started her career with straight country. She always experimented with different sounds on her records (mainly blues and gospel, and an occasional popish ballad), but for the first half of her recording career, she's towed the country line. After a departure with the very folksy "Real Live Woman", Yearwood is back, and with an even newer sound to boot. Her latest effort, "Inside-Out", is another original sounding record. It's a far cry from the twangy melodies of "She's in Love With the Boy" from her first record and "Wrong Side of Memphis" from a few years later. This is Trisha soul music. The opener, "Love Alone" is a great sing-a-long (if you can stay with her on the high notes). Yearwood has always had a knack for ballads, and she doesn't disappoint on this record. The beautiful "I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners" and "Second Chance" are standouts, and "Harmless Heart" has the perfect melody to compliment Trisha's voice. She sings a duet with Don Henley, but this time, there is none of the down-home sound of their previous pairing in "Walkaway Joe". This song, "Inside Out", is pure Bryan Adams pop. As with most Yearwood tunes, the lyrics deal nearly exclusively with lost loves, broken promises, and relationships. But after all, that's what life's all about, right?

Country purists will probably scoff at the "new" Trisha Yearwood. Lovers of good music and fine performance will probably cheer. And while most her fans would like to see her throw them the occasional country-twang bone on each record, "Inside Out" is without a doubt, a very solid effort. Trisha's sound may no longer be "country", but no one will ever accuse her of being boring.

Free Music Review: Enough of the Linda Rondsadt/Celene Dion comparisons!
Hit: 4 Stars

Give the comparison's a rest! If there is any female that has a voice that combines power, tenderness, and maturity in the country genre, better than Trisha Yearwood's I'd like to hear it. Ok, so Trisha has some pop effects in a few songs - she's still very different than Linda or even Celine. "Inside Out" reminds the fan and average listener why Trisha is so different: "For a While" wonderfully balances humor ("Poor old Coyote...some one had a worse day than me") with beautiful high notes that reflects the way Trisha can comfortably sway through a song like no one else can. Don't compare "I Would Have Loved You Anyway" to Celene - Trisha just happened to find a great song that exposes her outstanding range and ability to sensitively hit you in the heart while carrying a note. Sure Celene can belt it: she can yell - Trisha naturally elevates her voice with a positive feel and actually sings. "Love Me or Leave Me" is another vocal explosion that works. For those of you who appreciate genuine talent with intelligent lyrics and well crafted vocals - don't be fooled by comarisons to pop acts - thankfully, while her latest producer, Mark Bright, adds a few elements in an attempt to make her music acceptable to a new audience, Trisha will never stoop the level of sacrificing great vocals and well-thought out lyrics to make a gushy bubble-gum pop record. A voice with that kind of natural talent, and genuine integrity to the country format (and singing for that matter) deserves a listen. A good long listen.

Free Music Review: Another Winner
Hit: 4 Stars

After taking an artistic detour with last year's roots/acoustic-based album REAL LIVE WOMAN, Trisha Yearwood returns to the lush, country-meets-pop feel of her '98 release WHERE YOUR ROAD LEADS, with superb results. You could actually call this a sequel to that record, as it leans more toward heavy string arrangements and drum loops than fiddles and pedal steel. No complaints here, as she is one of the few Nashville artists who can do this with real artistry and conviction. Witness first single 'I Would've Loved You Anyway', which in lesser hands(think Faith Hill) would be just another weepy movie soundtrack ballad but is elevated to greater heights by Yearwood's emotional delivery and powerful voice. Many of the tracks on the cd follow in that vein, rarely veering into uptempo fare. She is also joined by Rosanne Cash for a reprise of Cash's classic 'Seven Year Ache', and while the arrangement of the song is note-for-note the same, it doesn't detract from the performance of either artists. Those disappointed by her last album, or those who prefer the 'How Do I Live' Trisha, will definately want to pick up this album. If you don't fall into either category, and just like well-performed pop music, then this would be a wise purchase, too.

Free Music Review: Great cd but a perfect example of where country is going.
Hit: 4 Stars

It's really not Trisha Yearwood's fault or anything but this cd no matter how good it is this is a perfect example as to where country music is slowly going and some what starting to sound like adult contempary pop music. That's not real bad or anything but I wish Trisha Yearwood would put stuff like more fiddles and more country instruments in her albums these days. It is a number of artists especially new ones coming in today who are recording in Nashville but making these pop style records and while I was listening to this cd I forgot I was listening to country music. I could not believe this was the same woman who sang She's in love with the boy and X's and O's. It has been a while since I bought a Trisha Yearwood cd but Inside Out was such a good song I just had to buy it. I also found out that Bryan Adams co wrote the song. Don Henley is a great singer but what is he doing on CMT? And why does Bryan Adams have a written song on country radio? This stuff just wonders me about where are all the real country people who should be in Nashville. I think country music needs another class of 89 again more like fast like as soon as possible! Trisha Yearwood did a nice job on this cd though.

Free Music Review: Still the best voice...
Hit: 4 Stars

Trisha Yearwood was blessed with a beautiful voice. She isn't a songwriter, but an interpreter. And while her CDs get less and less "country," that can be forgiven, especially when they are consistently well done. "Inside Out" is another great album, full of songs small on bombastic overproduction and big on Trisha's countrypolitan style. "Melancholy Blue" is the stand-out for me here, and just about as truly "country" as this album gets. Cherish the first time you listen to this track; you won't see the end coming. "Harmless Heart" is another heartwrenching ballad. "I Would've Loved You Anyway," while clearly a Celine Dion reject, is still an awesome power ballad, and admit it, we all love them. The last track, "When We Were Still in Love," breaks it down to the bare bones of music: just Trisha and a piano. Other tracks like "I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners" with Vince Gill and the title cut with Don Henley are equally good, making for a well-rounded album, not that Trisha ever really made a bad one.
