Morten Veland's Tristania was (notice the past tense!), as far as I know, one of the first symphonic metal bands that used the female melodic vocals + male death vocals + elaborate symphonic arrangements forumla that you see oft copied by bands everywhere today. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, After Forever, etc. have all used variants of the same formula with lots of success, but most people overlook erstwhile Tristania. In fact, I don't think any of the aforementioned bands' early offerings were remarkably good. Widow's weeds, Tristania's first studio album, on the other hand, is a MASTERPIECE.
I hear some of these songs, and I have the vague feeling I've heard the same melody or riff somewhere else in my sizable gothic (used in a loose sense; you get the point) music collection, and then I realize: Widow's Weeds was released back in freaking 1997! That was before symphonic metal became the craze that it is today.
I don't have the technical capacity to offer detailed analyses of all the songs, but here are some overall good qualities of the album:
- excellent mix of male and female vocals; voice modulation (esp. by the male singer) in Angellore
- quaint use of samples here and there
- unobtrusive, pleasant guitar riffs
- excellent symphonic arrangements. I think there's more than synth in the background, but I don't want to waste time straining my ears instead of letting the music flow :)
It is indeed sad that Morten Veland left Tristania. I think Vibeke Stene has a beautiful voice; Sirenia's singer is not nearly as good.
So, go ahead and get the album. If I had made a list of best symponic metal albums, I'd put this album right up there with Nightwish's Once.
