Free Music Review: this is good
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first item in my Tristania collection, as I've built my collection backwards, and while I think Beyond The Veil is far better, WOG is still worthy of the five stars. Yes it is flawed, whereas BTV is as close to perfect as you can get without being God Himself, but not to the point where it isn't enjoyable. While every track on BTV is listenable the entire way through, only four songs on WOG can keep my attention that long. The others are decent to good, but not excellent. "Selling Out" is the standout track for me, as I like the clean male vocals and the violin part is beautifully hypnotic. Vibeke sounds a lot better in some cases, but the choir parts are too loud and overpower the music, whereas they were intertwined seamlessly in BTV. "Wormwood" is a good song despite its [bad]concept, and "Tender Trip on Earth" is good once you drown out the Osten/Vibeke chorus part. They can hold vocals fine on their own, but they sound awful put together. "Deadlocked" is a softer track, very emotional.

Einar and Osten seriously lack Morten Veland's songwriting ability, as their songs are not poetic anymore, but simply focus on how pathetic their lives are. Also, since Einar is apparently the new front man, you notice a lot more electronics used in this one, although unlike what Theatre of Tragedy (blah...) has been doing lately, they haven't lost their legitimacy as a metal band. Anders' guitar riffs are painfully simple in many cases, and Ronny Thorsen doesn't have anywhere near the growling ability that Morten had. The songs are slower, and therefore SHOULD sound darker and heavier, but without Morten's musical genius to make a magnificent listening experience, the result is choppy and overloaded with synth. But if Tristania has done one thing right since their feud with Morten, they haven't lost their complexity and dark beauty.

In conclusion, it's no Beyond The Veil by any means, but hell I'd buy it again just for "Selling Out." It's a very good album, better than anything you'll hear on American radio, so while hardcore old Tristania fans will probably hate it because of their ignorance and closed-mindedness, those open to something new will find something great in this masterpiece.

Free Music Review: Dissapointing
Hit: 2 Stars

As much as I love groups like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Faith and the Muse, Lacrimosa, and The Gathering, I was expecting to absolutely adore this group. Unfortunately, for me, I just couldn't get into it. I gave it several listens. I really tried. It just isn't there.

Free Music Review: CAN DEATH METAL BE PRETTY?
Hit: 4 Stars

This band and several other B and B bands play some exquisite music but there's only one small problem. These bands - Tristania, TSOTB, After Forever etc.- are marginalizing their beautiful music with their ill advised death growls. Why don't they make duplicate recordings - one with their beloved gruff vocals and one with clean singing. If you like the growls, that would make both of us happy. Or how about loud whispering instead of growling. Within Temptation and Therion forsook the growls and they're extremely popular. I will say this about World of Glass, the growling bothers me less here than in other albums. It seems to fit better, perhaps because it's not forced where it shouldn't be and is used propitiously for maximum effect.

Anyway, this really is exquisite dark romantic orchestral music which I enjoy despite the growls. The music is imaginative very catchy and enchanting. The talented lady singer (Vibeke Stene) has a very pleasant, though not very powerful voice, which is fine for this type of music. I especially like the melancholy violin playing.

World of Glass, their third album, is, in my opinion, they're finest to date, despite losing a major band member when song writer/growler Morten Veland departed to form a new band called Sirenia and guess who they sound like? I like WOG better than the previous releases -Widow's Weeds and Beyond the Veil because the music seems less aggressive, less extreme, mellower and more mainstream. Chances are, you will like it too. This is a 4 1/2 star album and I recommend this CD heartily

Free Music Review: Tristania is amazing and refreshing!
Hit: 5 Stars

Tristania's new CD is a wonderful mix of doom metal with great female and male vocals. The female vocals are almost operatic, and the male vocals range from whispers to growls, yet it is all blended so pecfectly together. Tristania succeeds in being harmonious and aggressive, while still keeping a fine balance among their ranges of vocals. This is now one of my favorite CDs. I was hesitant at first to buy it, as I was not as familiar with this genre. But, luckily I kept an open mind and bought it. I do not regret it. All of the songs on this album are not only magnificent bends of styles, but they are all very unique. You can count on me buying more CDs from this talented Norwegian group, and you should buy them too if you like melodic metal. It is hard to find Tristania in US stores, so get it as soon as you see it.

Free Music Review: Excellent!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have listened to this about 8 times in the past two days and cant get tired of this beautiful CD. Anyone who likes Lacuna Coil will love this...Tristania are one of the best bands to come out of Norway...well next to Darkthrone maybe lol. Just go buy this CD and listen for yourself and you will not regret it.
