Free Music Review: Mayer to revive another blues movement???
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is an indication of John's mobility to flow from genre to genre and excel in doing so. Not many can become an acoustic pop sensation and drop it on a dime and make electric driven hard-core blues! Could you imagine Dave Matthews or James Taylor doing this???

Many have poorly rated this album, and it's something to note that there is a trend that has risen. The weaker or stronger the rating is, seems to resemble the reviewer's knowledge of music and musicianship in general! It takes a true musician of an established caliber to fully appreciate what John is creating in a music world filled with reality tv pop singers and phony, irritating so-called rappers who do not play or write their own music. The music on this album is BLUES-ROCK, if you don't like rock or the blues, you probably would rate it 1 star. This isn't cheesy pop music, but guitar driven rock with a blues spin. So don't expect the Dave Matthews style Mayer, but more of an Eric Clapton or Jonny Lang.

Though John is not technically a "bluesman" as many have stated, he has clearly marked his contentioncy of becoming one in the near future. Mayer is the real deal, despite what many have said. If he wasn't great then he wouldn't have been recording and playing countless shows side by side with other absolutely great performers and "guitar gods" such as Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, B.B.King, Herbie Hancock, Paul Schaefer, John Scoefield, and even country guitar king Brad Paisley, along with his backing duo Pino and Steve. Mayer is clearly bringing a blues revival to the younger generation, which along with young blues prodigies Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (with whom Mayer takes a close third behind these guys), should make a loud awakening among teens and others of all different ages to the new blues-rock genre they are each establishing.

If you enjoy the blues and good "real" music, this album is good news for you. If you expect anything other than rock and blues, you might not appreciate this album like you should. If you aren't a huge blues-rock fan, just keep an open mind about it and you just might end up liking it as many people have.

Free Music Review: An important album by an important artist
Hit: 5 Stars

I read a lot of the previous reviews and they really disappointed me. People need to stop giving John Mayer such a hard time and just listen to his music. For the people who are complaining about the sound quality, just adjust your EQ settings to make the levels match. I adjusted my settings and I can hear a lot of bass guitar and vocals with my settings. I have been listening to this album non-stop since I bought it because (gasp) IT'S GOOD MUSIC! Not only are the covers excellent but the original songs shine as well. The reason John is referencing some Hendrix riffs might have to do with the fact that he's playing one of Jimi's songs. Wait Until Tomorrow is one of my favorite songs on the album and his talent as a player really shines with his technique on the melody. The song is very difficult and he makes it sound crisp and clear while adding his own personal flair. Also, Stevie Ray Vaughan was arguably John's biggest influence and so I can understand why he would incorporate that sound into his playing. Pretty much all current popular music is derivative. Of course he is going to borrow from past artists but the trick is that he can write important songs and bring this music to millions of people. He is one of three artists that can record an album and have it released instantly by Columbia. The record label trusts that he will put out quality music and he always backs up their beliefs. The trust that Columbia has in him says a lot for someone who has 2 studio albums and 2 live albums with the label. I think this CD is a must for anyone who wants some upbeat, happy rock music to brighten up their day. There are some mellow songs on the disc such as Gravity and Daughters that bring a different feel but I find that this album just asks to be played loud. I think John Mayer has now earned the respect of his peers (Buddy Guy, Clapton, B.B. King, etc.) and fans alike and that he is broadening many people's musical tastes. Just let the guy do his thing. He continues to release important albums that not only show his growth but encourage his fans to grow with him. Once you get into this music, you will never turn back.

Free Music Review: Trying!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me begin by saying that this is not a traditional blues album. The purists who would argue that this is no Stevie Ray Vaughan would be correct; while SRV is one of Mayer's idols, he doesn't try to replicate his style of music. I had the pleasure of seeing John play at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles, and I was overwhelmed by how incredible the show was. His cover of Hendrix seemed to match well with his new material and I looked forward expectantly to the release of his new CD.

I bought the album on the iTunes music store because it came with an included "making of" video, and it is this video that best describes Mayer's attitude. He conducts a brief interview where he talks about how he fell in love with blues at an early age and wanted to incorporate it into his own music. But his most important statement was this: "As a pop musician, I want to be the prism, for taking what I know is a very powerful style of music and somehow crystallizing it into something that is 2005 and is identifiable as being now." He then goes on to say how his heroes are those whom you cannot picture without the instrument in their hands, men like Vaughan and Hendrix; men who used their success to evolve and alter their music into the present.

Having read this, I hope you have a clearer picture of what Mayer is all about. He is not the traditional blues musician we know he could be, but neither is he the glitzy pop star of the past 5 years. He is an extremely talented musician using his success to bring the powerful style of blues to the attention of the public. In fact, we could guess that Mayer is hoping to be a miniature Hendrix to the world of 2005, but instead of mixing psychedelic with blues he used pop.

I personally look forward to what Mayer has to offer in the years to come and will continue to support his efforts. Use this CD as a launching pad into the depths that blues has to offer, but do me one favor: don't tell anyone your favorite blues song is "I've Got a Woman".

Free Music Review: Come for John, stay for the soulful talent of all
Hit: 5 Stars

Those who hate John don't get him. That's fine. Leaves more seats available for the fans who DO get him. Blues is blues. Soul is soul. If it sounds right, it doesn't matter if it's an 80 year old white grandma. I swear I think people hate on others out of jealousy - think they can do better but didn't get the break, or don't like to see "Wonderland" guy show even more depth and soul than he had thus far. John makes what he makes, he makes no excuses. He felt he'd done just enough of the acoustic pop, and wanted to get to his bluesy side, the side he alway felt was there but wasn't ready to come out. "TRY!" was it's time to come out. Here, he proves that he does not hide behind flawless productions in the studio - he is out there with two other KILLER musicians who are helping lift him up and get to where he's going musically, and it JUST WORKS. Watch some live performances on YouTube if you still think his guitar chops are questionable. He has proven he has the talent with the guitar, his silky, husky voice matches perfectly with not only this soulful blues/rock, but with his sweet acoustic pop. He is an "all around" musician with something to say, and we should pay attention. And lest anyone think JM has a false sense of self - he knows he's the "white elephant" in the blues room, but I think he shows you he can do it, too, no matter how he got started. How many more blues/jazz/soul endorsements do you need to get off his back??? Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Clapton, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, etc. "Who Did you Think I Was" tells it all - you though he could ONLY sing sweet panty-dropping songs, but he shows you he can do more - MUCH more, and it's believable. Bottom line - if you're a lover of music, when it's good, then you can judge this fairly as a GREAT soulful blues rock album. I just don't see how anyone can deny the talent present by these three men. Give it a try...

Free Music Review: He's the REAL DEAL
Hit: 5 Stars

Blues guitar purists may balk at buying this CD since Mr.Mayer has achieved fame by writing well crafted pop tunes sung in a laid back manner.
Wipe that image of John Mayer from your mind now!Or at least TRY.
The 1st tune up on this disc will have you second guessing yours ears as John sings "Who Did You Think I Was".You might think it was the ghost of SRV himself singing since Mayer sounds surprisingly like the great blues guitarist/singer who inspired him to play the blues in the first place.John's guitar intro on this tune will quickly silence any doubters who may question Mayer's ability to "talk the talk" and "walk the walk".
Check out "Wait Until Tomorrow".There's never been a doubt that drummer Steve Jordan is a BAD MOFO,but his super hip updated Mitch Mitchell groove is so smokin' you'll almost forget to listen to Mayer play and sing this Jimi Hendrix classic!
The super slow blues,"Out Of My Mind",might make some girls wonder where their posterboy of pop has gone to.I'll tell you where he's gone to...he's gone home to his blues roots.
The boy burns this blues number to the ground.Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino lay down the sparsest of accompaniment forcing Mayer to dig deep and testify to the blues' healing power pretty much on his own. You'll feel pretty good after he puts the wraps on this 12/8 track.I sure did.
I'll leave you to find out how good the rest of this CD is and finish up my brief review by urging all who love good old fashioned guitar god blues-rock to put this one in your shopping cart and proceed to checkout immediately. You don't want to wait for any more reviews to convince you to buy TRY any longer.
This is the last review to read.Period.
