Free Music Review: Didn't like him before this!
Hit: 5 Stars

My impression of John Mayer before this album were very low - generic acoustic guitar pop aimed soley at the chick market. But then I saw the video for "Who Did You Think I Was" and thought I should give the album a listen.

I listened and I was impressed. Now I know there are some one star reviews for this album from people that want to compare him to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, but to do so is unfair. For one Vaughan is dead and therefore an idol, and also Mayer is still pretty young, not to mention the fact that his previous works are completely different from this one. But the fact is Mayer is an accomplished guitar player and a reasonably decent singer, and it's very rare these days for a younger artist to put out this sort of material (i.e. proper music instead of market-driven pap), especially after making a name for themselves as more of a pop artist.

Favourite tracks for me from this album are the slower paced "Gravity", "Daughters" and the more up-beat "I Got a Woman."

Bottom line is, if you like blues guitar, have a listen, and make your own mind up. I can't wait to see if Mayer puts out another album in this genre.

Free Music Review: Not only good, but an important release
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great cd, on many levels. We finally get a new blues rocker who can really play, sing and write. As a live release it shows the band raw, not afraid to show blemishes. No, John isn't Hendrix or SRV. Who is? But he sure can play. Some "purists" posting reviews conveniently forget the rap given to both Hendrix & SRV by "purists" back in the day--that both were just pale imitations of Albert King. I guess that Mayer is suburban, white & rich takes his cred for blues down, but what about Mike Bloomfield, an upper middle class Jewish kid from the Chicago suburbs? Gonna discredit him too?

The fact is this--this CD brings the real stuff to a new generation of listeners, more so than Johnnie Lang or the other young players. No disrespect to them, but Mayer has millions of fans already. if 25% get into this (our) music, start listening to blues, start supporting other artists, we get a giant kick. My guess is that B.B. King is thankful to Eric Clapton & John Mayall for getting white kids in the US to listen to blues, and to him. We should embrace John Mayer as a soulmate, don't push him away just because we wish our bank accounts matched up.

Free Music Review: Next in Line for Eric Clapton's Throne?
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this cd after seeing a televised performance of the same tour. Ive always thought of John Mayer as a pop star who had some wannabe skills but got lost to stardom. This cd proves he does what he has to do in the commercial world so he can do what he really wants to do. Play strong funky, blues-infuenced rock. "Try!" is very jam band -oriented but never boring. But Im sure the pop fans would prefer to hear more of his hits. They are mostly represented hear by "Daughters" that seems to bring more squeals and accompanied singing from the girls in the audience than the other songs.

Mayer is an amazing talent. Not only is he an incredible guitarist but he handles his vocals very well at the same time. The fact that he enlisted and can hang with such heavyweights as bassist Palladino and former Late Show drummer Steve Jordan, shows his maturity and professionalism. This cd is a side of Mayer I hope to see more of. Id like to see his career moving from pop to Stevie Ray Vaughn-style mateiral like this and will eventually end up in Clapton-land, where he gets the respect from his musical peers as well as popstar success.

Free Music Review: Finally!...something bluesy for all generations
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is far more mature then the other albums previously released by John Mayer. Along with Pino and Steve, John has produced a sound that is somewhat old school and a lot more raw. His original songs, (`good love is on the way` is my particular favorite) step up his game. If you want Mr. your body is a wonderland, you are probably looking in the wrong place. It is different, it is unique, it is guitar playing at it`s finest, it is a risk he has taken and risk that seems to have paid off. Personally, I could do with never hearing `Daughters` again, but his revamp of it makes it almost like a new tune. A lot of people have talked about how this album may not reach the throngs of pop music fans which have made John so famous, but I believe this CD will make him even more famous then he already is. He is now getting past the screaming girls that consume his fan base and reaching out to those guys with guitar dreams and singing music the older generations can appreciate. He is bringing back the blues. Go into listening to this CD with an open mind and I am pretty sure you will come out bopping your head to at least a few of the tunes.

Free Music Review: im shocked!
Hit: 5 Stars

no i'm not shocked that john mayer wails on guitar through this album. i've been knowing he could play. i've seen him on eric clapton's live at the crossroads dvd. what i am shocked about is to see all the poor reviews on here! i can't believe this! i mean i was a fan of john mayer's other albums as well due to the sootheing relaxation feel you get from his simple sounding little melodies and his calm voice. but ever since seeing that clapton dvd, i was wondering when he was going to come out the closet so to speak. i mean he can really play! well this is it! this is the cd! he grew his hair out and he's bringing it in full scale force! people are complaining about the production of this cd. i think the production sounds absolutely fantastic. what is with you people!?! if it isn't perfectly popy produced to your likings of brittany or christina (who aren't even true musicains) it isn't good?? if you are a fan of john mayer or a fan of bluesy type songs that are played and sang with true feeling, than buy this cd!!! if not than wait untill brittany can lose that pregnancy fat and get back to being a sexy dancer, i mean a "musicain".
