TRY! is a great album from an awesome trio. John Mayer is pop, he will always be. That is thanks to Your body is a wonderland. But John has grown as a person and an artist from those acoustic poppy days. TRY! was never said to be a blues album..... not souly anyways...... it is a pop album with a blues edge. You all have to admit some of the guitar on here is beautiful music to your ears. "Gravity" and "Out of my mind" are perfect examples of just how good of a guitar player he is. The lyrics all make sense. John has a way of writing things that most of us want to say, and most of us feel but cannot say them in the elegant way that he writes it out. He is a good artist, he is definately the better ones out there today and gets absolutely no credit.

Everyone here who gave him a bad review, I bet, is still comparing his voice to Dave Matthews and saying all he knows how to do is write loveydovey songs about girls body parts.

John is grown, he is an excellent artist.

This CD proves it.

People who go out of their way to bash this album, do so by comparing Mayer to Stevie Ray. Mayer is not Stevie Ray. Not even Jimmy Vaughn is Stevie Ray. Where Mayer takes his influences from go deeper than solely just Stevie Ray.
This album is creative, and is more of a pure electric sound than previous albums. With Mayer in the past, we tended to see a more pop-based acoustic sound, without any solo'ing of any sort. Only at a live show would you get a taste of his blues side, and those instances were infrequent. Any Given Thursday showed a bit of the blues flavor, but teaming up with Buddy Guy and Double Trouble in preparation for this new direction has helped him transition into this new sound, with two new players- both of which are all stars in any rock and blues conessieuer's book.
This album is not so unlike his past albums that you will dislike it, but rather a different direction taken by the same Mayer most know and love. I highly recommend it, especially to the guitar enthusiast.

If you don't know John Mayer's history with the blues, then go read his bio. There you will also read that he dropped out of the Berkley School of Music because he was bored and wanted to play...he'd been playing since he was a kid. As a self-taught guitarist, I know how difficult starting an instrument can be, as I'm sure a lot of people out there have discovered. I'm not here to bash those who've yet to realize the brilliance of John Mayer (Trio), nor am I some 13-year-old girl that is simply attracted to John. I'm a musician and have been since I began singing in church when I was three. I'm 23 now and have been playing the guitar for just over 3.5 years now, in part, due to the inspiration of John Mayer and Dave Matthews. Music, remember, is not something you can judge the way you can a simple fact. No one judgement will ever be 100 percent right or wrong, including my own.

As far as the album goes, I like it...that's really all that matters...maybe you'll like it, too...

Listen to his lyrics on "who did you think I was"? HE DOESN'T WANT TO DO THE SAME OLD STUFF ANYMORE!
Give him credit for that! He's doing what he wants to do now. This is what's wrong with the music industry and why music all sounds the same-because people freak out when someone changes their style and tries something that isn't necessarly different for themselves but different for their fans! You're lucky he is sharing this side of himself with you and making it about the music and not the money!
As someone who has grown up on Stevie Ray Vaughn and Hendrix and as someone who has always loved John Mayer I really appreciate this cd. Of course it's not going to sound exactly like his influences because it is still John Mayer.
For a live cd it sounds very good. It's not over-produced like a lot of the other music that is out there.
Listen to it with an open mind and give it a chance.. it's not going to be what you expect! appreciate it for that!

Free Music Review: A Great Departure
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is a gem. John Mayer's considerable talent and maturity as a guitarist/songwriter is showcased beautifully and I'm thrilled he's taken this musical detour - whether temporary or permanent - into the blues/rock genre. His voice is different to be sure, and it might be a little difficult for those who have a strong association of his voice with his pop hits to make the transition to a different style. I think that's their loss. If you like his voice and you like good blues, you'll probably like this CD. Don't fear change. :-) I agree there are a couple of moments his voice doesn't gel perfectly with the style of music, but those are largely insignificant and forgivable in light of the overall excellence of the CD. Comparing this blues/rock offering to "the greats" seems a little silly - He's not BB King, so he won't sound like him. Step back and experience this CD for what it is: A great musical contribution from a very talented artist.
