Free Music Notes for Try! John Mayer Trio Live in ConcertFree Music Review: Johnny We Hardly Knew Ya Hit: 5 Stars
Holly cow! This guy has been doing a little wood sheddin'. I have Heavier Things and it occasionally makes its way into the CD player and then back to the shelf. Try! stays in the CD player. A very impressive piece of work. Great song selections that carry a little more import than some of Mayer's previous more pop-oriented writing. But it's really the guitar playing, backed by this incredible rhythm section, that stands out. Mayer set out to prove something to his audience on this disc, establishing himself as a musician to be taken seriously, and he pulls it off convincingly. When you play in a trio format there is nowhere to hide, and Mayer stands at the front of this band and rocks. This is the best CD I've heard in a long time. Its reassuring to know that with all the drivel you hear on the radio, someone still has the integrity to break through the [...] and put out an exceptional CD.
Free Music Review: A Most AWESOME SOund Hit: 5 Stars
I saw John Mayer before he decided to go in the Blues direction. All I could think was, "WoW, what a great guitar player". I have heard all of his poppy stuff and he is good, but it is the musicianship I hear coming through the speakers.
I next heard him playing on the Eric Clapton-Crossroads DVD. Wow, he is getting another few fans, brother, friends, me. It took me awhile to pick this last CD up and I have no idea why I waited so long. I love the sound, I think he has found his niche, but I know the pop sound will still be around. BTW-I need to get this CD back from my brother. One of those few CDs I can listen to anytime for any number of times in a row. If you like Eric Clapton, his mentor, you will find him very enjoyable and he brings a new life to this genre and the old songs. Can't wait to see where he takes his next turn.
Free Music Review: The Next Stevie Ray Vaughn? Hit: 5 Stars
For those of you that have put down this album by saying that the quality is bad, or that his solos are dissapointing, or that John Mayer is not really that good. First, on the quality, this is a LIVE album. A live album is when mics are placed around the stage to pick up the sound a crowd would hear. Newsflash, most bands don't sound as good as they do on the record. I think that it was a brilliant move to release this album as a live version. On the issues of his solos, watch Mayer play his solos. Eyes shut, mouth hanging open. He doesn't play the guitar, it is an extension of his body. For him to play a riff, it's like you and I raising our right hands. These solos are the music that is coursing through him. It is my belief that John Mayer is the reincarnation of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Those that doubt me should listen to the whole CD.
Free Music Review: Now this is music! Hit: 5 Stars
Let's face it, with so much hype and emptiness found in most popular music it seems that image is everything; you might as well not put the darn disc in the jacket since the cover and name is what sells most albums. This, however, is GREAT music pure and simple. John Mayer is an absolutely fabulous song-writer, and now that he has formally pushed his way through the gap into the blues genre I am happy to discover a whole new generation of young people getting turned on to REAL music once more. It seems things are slowly starting to come full cirlce again. Up until the mid-80's most popular music was great music because it was about the songs and message, not the money. I hope that this album and others like it may start a trend in which new listeners will be demanding substance once more and not hype. Kudos to Mayer for a terrific album.
Free Music Review: Refreshingly new and REAL Hit: 5 Stars
Ok, so it's not the typical music you're used to from John, get over it! This is what John Mayer should have been doing all along. This effort shows where the artist's true passion is and the inspiration that made him the excellent and talented guitar player he is today. It's certainly not a rip off of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan as one other reviewer seems to think. While SRV's music certainly shares some of the same influences, and John is certainly influenced by Stevie (as he freely admits), this is nothing like the vast majority of SRV material. SRV was in a league of his own and if John wants to take take some of that influence and use it as a catalyst to produce the kind of music that he loves then I am all for it. I sincerely hope John continues down this path he has embarked upon.
