I'm content to crouch in the bushes under cover of the five-star reviews swaying in the breeze all around. If anyone stumbles on my hideaway, I will whisper that this CD of Tchaikovsky's evergreen ballet suites is truly amateurish -- a prime case of Rostropovich learning the trade of conducting on the job in 1978. Pallid, feeble rhythms alternate with clomping slow ones. The Berlin Phil. sounds resigned and bored; they barely bother to play up to speed. Speaking of speed, the Amazon reviewer must have dropped some before spinning this listless CD. It is to be avoided at all costs. Now go away and let me hide.

Shortly after recording these three ballet suites in 1978, Mstislav Rostropovich likened conducting the Berlin Philharmonic to driving a locomotive. You get on, and you go where it takes you, he said--but in this case, the orchestra went where he wanted it to go. The playing is magnificent, but it is the characterization, the things Rostropovich gets the players to do that they wouldn't otherwise have done, that makes these accounts so memorable. As you listen, you are transported to a different world, for no conductor understands Tchaikovsky's soul better than Rostropovich.
