The Best Hip-Hop Album of All Time!
`Back to the Wreck Shop' by Tuff Crew is one of the most ground breaking Hip-Hop albums of all time. The rhymes are inspired, dextrous and witty. (Note: There is no Swearing on this Album.) They are performed with a boundless energy seldom heard today.
The beats are extraordinary. Load and Damn Funky! This Album is greatly admired and excessively copied by successful artists to this day. I heard a reworking of the Tuff Crew song `She Rides That Pony' (an inspired lyric fest with bone crushing beats) by the Roots and re-titled BOOM. The Roots version is a wholesale copy of the Tuff Crew original. They even have the audacity to spit "what we have here is a brand new sound". This only goes to show that Tuff Crew's music has not dated and still influences Hip-Hop today.
This Album is also a master class in the use of Turntables as a valid musical instrument. The scratching undoubtedly is the best ever put down on Vinyl. DJ Too Tuff's cutting of "shut up already damn", a vocal lick by Prince, on `What You Don't Know' is mind blowing.
DJ Too Tuff is a legend and needs to be regarded as such.
The other stand out tracks are `Got To Be Funky' and `Down With The Program'. The first being a reworking of a James Brown's standard, which was later sampled by DJ Muggs, the producer of Cypress Hill, on their first album. Muggs is a Tuff Crew fan. The second track, being a smooth paced rap over an infectious booming baseline, which still sounds as fresh as the first day it was released 19 years ago!
Tracks not to be forgotten are `My Parta Town', which is simply one of the best block rocking beatz of all time and `Going The Distance', which is an epic reworking of the Bill Conti `Rocky' theme.
There are no filler tracks on this album. Not one. It is just too good! `Back To The Wreck Shop' raised the bar of lyrical dynamics and equally of Hip-Hop production. Its reverberations within the industry are as strong today as when it first exploded on the scene.
