I've been a professional musician, bassman, since I was 14, 1944, and Conrad Gozzo was one of my idols from way back. I saw him on Kenton's band sitting next to Ray Wetzel playing the greatest I've ever heard. The trumpets were recorded in 1957 before multitracks-one take! Listen to "Trumpeter's Prayer" and water comes to your eyes for Goz's great playing, simple, straight forward, all that great implied power held back so beautifically, strong, perfect breath, sensitive feeling, merely the greatest there ever was. Tutti's charts are occasionally a bit commercial but always tasty; in those days in the studios you had to please several, the producer, and A & R people. All in all this is a wonderful reissuance, well mixed in digital, bringing up the bass and other usually silent sounds from those recording days. Trombones recorded 1966 are great, Rosolino unbelievable. Yet both he and the great Goz died tragically too soon- such amazing gifts these boys had and yet were never able to enjoy these later years looking back a bit at all our old pals. These sessions had to be terrifically animated and full of fun and jokes and high respect for each other. Goz got a hand for "Prayer" from the whole orchestra. This is a true gem CD.
