Free Music Review: Great R&B/Fusion From The 70's!

Former Return To Forever drummer Lenny White chose to move even more in a mainstream direction after the dissolving of one of contemporary music's most popular jazz fusion ensembles in the late 1970's. Each virtuoso member of that supergroup went on to continued solo success to various degrees and in Lenny White's case, the area of interest now turned to commercial-flavored R&B/Pop with those progressive jazz fusion overtones tilting the sounds in the direction of the more musically-sophisticated and skilled musicianship-oriented listening audience, much the same as the highly-popular group Steely Dan was doing. The most noteworthy track from this release was the radio-friendly R&B single "Peanut Butter" with it's upbeat 'party' atmosphere, danceable groove and catch-phrase lyrics, showing White had more than just a 'heavy' jazz intellectual instinct. This music was more about fun and also exploring the myriad of subtleties in relationships with ballads such as "Morning Sunrise", the title cut, and "Oh Sylvie". White was very fortunate to be able to tap the musical community and enlist talents such as vocalist Donald Blackman, bass player Barry Johnson and Earth,Wind & Fire keyboardist Larry Dunn to enhance his pop-flavored confections. The only track that really showed off his jazz fusion leanings was the final album cut "Tropical Nights", an instrumental-only selection with a big-band styled horn arrangement and some intense be-bop flavored soloing by guitarists Eddie Martinez and Nick Moroch. The chart success of this first group release under White's leadership proved that he had his finger on the pulse of the then-current market and knew how to craft a very savvy, commercially-oriented project that still managed to maintain it's musical integrity without ending up being relegated to the level of 'disco dross'.
