Free Music Notes for Twila Paris - Greatest HitsFree Music Review: no room for fear Hit: 5 StarsTwila Paris is the grande dame of Christian music, a classy fixture on the stage, and a genuine voice that has never been overproduced or diluted by crossover ambitions.
Paris is one of those artists who projects enough real-human street cred to her fans that it seems natural to most of them to refer to her simply by her first name. This collection of 'Twila Songs' links old with new to great effect.
'This if no time for fear
This the time for faith and determination
Don't lose the vision here, carried away by the motion
Hold onto all that you hide in your heart.
There is one thing that has always been true
It holds the world together: God is in control.'
These lines from the album's opener go to the core of one of Paris' central convictions, one that has fueled an astonishingly wide range of styles for a woman who appears demure, and in her most recent more mature incarnations, almost matronly.
If the Lord's sovereignty is a key motif of her song, Paris does not spin this in any triumphalistic direction. To the contrary, she is satisfyingly attentive to both human fragility ('The Warrior is a Child') and nobility ('Faithful Friend').
Yet this conviction is for Paris no mere theological abstraction. Like all good theology, its current flow irrepressibly in the direction of doxology:
'Once in a while my heart gets lonely
Once in a while the night is gloom
Time and again you are the only one
I can hold onto
There never is a moment when you leave my side
I've felt your arms around me every time I've cried
All my life
You have been a faithful Father
I believe you word is true
You have been a faithful Father
I will follow you.'
GREATEST HITS leads one through the adventure of a life lived faithfully and out loud. Some of the songs burst with audacious praise. More often, they articulate for others the genuine article of constancy in the dissonant places, a discipline that has enabled Paris to discern provision where others might spy only a desert's dryness.
This Twila Paris anthology is a collective ode to human courage and divine fidelity in times of both rejoicing and deep distress. It is a mile marker along the way to the maturation of 'Christian music' into something that resembles and echoes its biblical roots and the day-to-day actualization of the real-world faith that those origins continue to nourish.
Free Music Review: It's Twila, so it can't really be bad. Hit: 5 StarsThis is a nicely-compiled CD, with many songs from later albums. I did not listen to the genre much in the '90's, so several of the songs on this CD were new to me.
Note that "The Warrior is a Child" is the more popular version on this CD, unlike a previous compilation ("A Heart That Knows You") which had a more rudimentary, almost a capella version on it. I bought this CD for that reason - I wanted to have the version of that song that I grew up hearing on Christian radio.
I would've liked to have seen "It All Goes Back" from "Kingdom Seekers" on this CD, but it did have "Runner" so I can't really complain.
As an aside, I agree with Frank King's review of "The Ultimate Collection." If you're looking for the best representation of Twila's career - and truly her greatest hits - buy this CD and a copy of "A Heart That Knows You." You'll get some overlap, but you'll also get "Prince of Peace", "Sweet Victory", and a couple others that are must-haves for an Twila collection.
Free Music Review: Fantastic artist; fantastic retrospective Hit: 5 StarsTwila Paris is truly a Christian music pioneer. Her music transcends time and guides the listener into a genuine atmosphere of worship. This album, Greatest Hits, is a good primer to her impressive career. "God is in Control", in addition to being a huge hit, has become an anthem for my family. "The Warrior is a Child" is as true today as it was in 1984 when it was first recorded. "Joy of the Lord", "We Will Glorify", "We Bow Down" "Lamb of God", "How Beautiful" and "He is Exalted" are incredible worship songs that are sung around the world. "Run to You", "I am Not Afraid Anymore" and "Destiny" are excellent examples of Twila's ability to write a hit song. The three new songs are good, but tend to pale when standing next to the classics. This is an excellent album and well worth the investment!
Free Music Review: Wonderful! Hit: 5 StarsThis CD was incredible. The words were inspiring and the music was great. This is definitely a CD for all people who like her music. Anyone who buys this will really love it!
Free Music Review: The only true Christian songwriter... Hit: 5 StarsI have listened to Twila Paris music for more than 10 years now! And it is hard to believe, for me, that I am still a fan of hers...What makes Twila keep her 'audience'?? Simply, I should say her music! Her songs are real and her lyrics are written from the heart. Even if you are not a songwriter or don't play a musical instrument - you can tell Twila writes from the heart. Most, if not all, of her songs are deep. She has this certain style that she keeps by combining Christian lyrics with a sad melody. It makes the song more 'serious' and I think spiritual. If you are a musician, and have listened to her songs, then you will know Twila writes in the minor scale. Keeping the songs at a deep and serious feel. It is something I think other Christian artist don't want to go for. They probably think... Who buys a album filled with sad and depressing melodies (For example: Christ In Us, My Best Friend, The Time Is Now, Every Heart That Is Breaking)?? Well... I DO! Other Christian artist should stop with the silly and annoying "Baby One More Time" ... and start writing real music like Twila Paris. Now, for this album: Twila Paris - Greatest Hits... It simply is that... Greatest Hits and I think a collection of beautiful songs that are timeless. The Warrior Is A Child was written many years ago, but still today it is an excellent song! The Time Is Now, I believe that song with all my heart, since September 11, 2001, I think the lyrics to this song are more powerful than ever... Every Heart That Is Breaking, Twila writes this song in response to many people out there who deal with 'life' and don't know how to get through it. It deals with people in prison, parents getting a divorce, etc. Again, a true songwriter, she writes what people go through everyday in life. How Beautiful... Wow!! 'How beautiful' is this song? It is a very beautiful, timeless masterpiece! Even today, I still hear that song on Christian radio! If you are not familiar with Twila Paris, I suggest buying this album and get a 'feel' into what real Christian music is all about! There are some songs on there that are guaranteed to make you cry!
