Free Music Notes for Bloody KissesFree Music Review: GENIUS!!! Hit: 5 Stars
In 1993 Type O Negative released their 3rd album "Bloody Kisses" and one major thing changed. The band turned from a thrash metal style band to a gothic/doom metal band. Peter Steele used his vampiyric voice throughout the entire album and barely screams like he did in the past. This is my favorite Type O Negative album ever and one of my favorite albums of all time! The whole album is pure genius! The lyrics are so well written. The music is gothic, sad, ocassionally funny, and creepy. Peter Steele just like Glenn Danzig before him has always had a scary reputation and was feared by critics and the rest of the media. The songs on this album are all very awesome and I'm going to review them(I won't rate the intro and skits, just the actual songs):
Machine Screw: The opening intro and what an interesting one it is. Be warned, it's very nasty.
Christian Woman: 5/5 The first actual song and basically starts off slow and then goes through so many changes in the almost 9-minute time this song runs in. Very beautiful and pokes fun at Christianity as well! ;)
Black No. 1: 5/5 The first very gothic song on the album and the longest song as well at an amazing 11:15! It pokes fun at gothic culture and it's ironic considering the band is goth. However this is an incredible song that has catchy lyrics and amazing quiet moments.
Fay Wray Come Out and Play: Yikes! The first of a few skits on the album and it's very disturbing and kind of funny. It's basically a tribal group sacrificing a woman to some monster thing...
Kill All the White People: 4/5 A disturbing title and an odd song as well. Peter is yelling in a German accent and you can hear a fight in the background as well. Great guitar work in this and makes fun of racism and Nazism. A little odd though...
Summer Breeze: 5/5 An amazing cover of the Seals & Crofts hit! This version is kind of depressing but the vocals kick-ass and this was the first ever Type O Negative song I ever heard actually!
Set Me on Fire: 3/5 "Summer Breeze" builds up to this song. A very Beatles-esque song but incredibly cheesy. Not so good.
Dark Side of the Womb: The shortest skit on the album and incredibly unusual. It's basically a baby crying over an industrial beat. Sounds like an abortion of some sorts?
We Hate Everyone: 5/5 Despite being kind of light-hearted, this song is awesome! It's poking fun at the people that hate Type O Negative and how they don't give a fu**.
Bloody Kisses(A Death in the Family): 5/5 The epic title track and a very depressing one of that fact. Very doomy and beautiful with incredible lyrics about lost love etc.
3.0.I.F: The last skit on the album and also my favorite one. Incredibly scary! Listen to it in the dark.
Too Late: Frozen: 4/5 A surprisingly up-beat song about lost-love as well(the last few songs are about that same subject). Gets kind of repetitive but the Beatles-esque melodies are very cool.
Blood & Fire: 5/5 This is another awesome song with rather sexual lyrics. It's kind of odd but it has very awesome guitar especially the opening riffs!
Can't Lose You: 5/5 Emotional closer to this masterpiece!
Free Music Review: Exploring a fine line between dark and humorous... Hit: 5 Stars
Ah...Type O Negative, dark quartet of moody, macabre, sometimes offensive, sometimes funny, but always rocking music. Many consider this their best album, and it probably is. I certainly love it. Every track (even the fillers) contribute to a sense of schizoid darkness embraced in an air of humor. The first track alone, "Machine Screw," just sends chills down the spine. It's difficult to determine if I should laugh or cringe...so i do both. "Christian Woman" and "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" are classic tracks, and are utterly brilliant, possessing as much melodic beauty and technical musicianship as anything done by King Crimson, Pink Floyd, or Black Sabbath. "Fay Wray Come Out and Play," another filler that's either scary or funny, though it's probably more funny than anything. "Kill All the White People"...is just plain hilarious. Listen to it and laugh, for that's all it is: a mockery of racism at its most extreme, to the point of total humor. "Set Me on Fire," "Summer Breeze," the title track, "Blood and Fire," "Too Late: Frozen,"...all are incredible testaments to Type O's blending of gothic beauty with metal mayhem, mixing depressive emotions with unbridled hilarity. If the songs aren't mocking society ("Kill All the White People," and "We Hate Everyone") they're mocking ex-girlfriends and goth chicks. I read somewhere that "Black No. 1" was about an ex-GF goth chick of frontman Peter Steele's who liked him to wear a mirror so she could imagine f***ing herself...sounds like a depressing situation that could easily be made fun of to me, and that's precisely what the band does. Musically and lyrically, the album shows the band in top-form, easily making it their best album (although it is arguable that the following albums were just as good, and IMHO they are, if not better). Get this album!!! Listen to it...and either wallow in the dark and moody pastures of depression, or run in the plateaus of mockery and fun! Either way, this album is incredible!
Free Music Review: I Bet You Anything I'm More Goth Than You!! Hit: 5 Stars
I was really suprised when I first heard this album WAY back when. I knew Type-O from "Slow, Deep and Hard" which I didn't like at all. Then one day I heard "Black No. 1" on the radio one day and I thought "This is brilliant". A song that makes so much fun of the whole goth culture, yet perfectly captured the dark, autumny, vampiric feel of the whole goth music scene. And they do it very well. When I found out it was Type-O I suddenly had a new found respect for a group of guys that had a fairly wide range of styles (if you call rock, punk and goth varied) and ALSO had the ability to execute all of them perfectly. Now, this CD does have a slight mix of goth and a little punky/speedy (I dare say) metal tunes, but for the most part it's a very long and excellent journey into the humor and horror of a somewhat boring and pretentious style of music (this being goth which I normally CANNOT stand). Peter Steele's voice is very unique and really gives a creepy feel to all the songs whether they be fast, slow or really slow. Reminds me a lot of The Swans. In fact it wouldn't suprise me AT ALL if The Swans were a major influence on the switch of styling that they've undertaken with this release. This is a great (debut?) into what would be a serious of very dark and emotional, yet funny and wild, CD's that really stand tall as a Tribute Of Excellence (a Headstone, maybe) for when Type-O are no more. Once more, if you are at all into "dark, slow and heavy" music then you won't like any of Type-O's earlier releases. They're good, but they're nothing like Bloody Kisses, October Rust and World Coming Down.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Wonderful.......A Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Type O Neagtive is one of the few bands that have an extremely gothic sound without the fast tempos and the screaming. Scratch that...they are the only band with those styles. This is such an amazing C.D. I made a mistake with buying Life is Killing Me first (not saying its a bad C.D.) but there sound was too 70's for in that C.D. I contemplated for a while, then I bought Bloody Kisses. It was the most amazing arrangment I had ever heard from a metal band. My other music (Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Tool) couldn't compare to the sounds here. Christian Woman-The second greatest T.O.N. song ever written. The melodies and bass noises are very good. Black No. 1-The greatest T.O.N. song ever written. I love the lyrics and when they're all singing, it sounds so awesome. Kill All the White People-This song didn't really do it for me. It reminded me alot of their first two C.D.'s, just not as good. Summer Breeze-This is by far T.O.N.'s best cover. It sounds so metal. Set Me On Fire-This song is redundant in a good way. I love Josh's singing. We Hate Everyone-What a great song. This is T.O.N.'s roots at their best. Bloody Kisses-This song is so good. I love the tempo and how slow it is. The harmonies are so good. Too Late:Frozen-This song is like "Misinterpretation" from their first C.D. Very well done. Can't Lose You-Very fine. Very repetitive. Love it. I think I forgot one but hey that's okay. This is a must for any Type O fan.
Free Music Review: Bloody Kisses Hit: 5 Stars
Bloody Kisses. There really isn't much that can be said about this album because it's a must-listen to really appreciate the music. I could type until I ran out of space and would still be unable to fully impress upon anyone the greatness of this album. From "Christian Woman," to "Black no. 1"" this album is absolutely amazing. You really just have to listen to it to truly appreciate the music and the band. If you are not (or not sure you are) a fan of Type O Negative, this album would cement your feelings one way or the other. A true surprise on this album is the cover song "Summer Breeze." Originally released in 1972 by Seals & Crofts, this cover is definitely not something that you would think to hear from Type O Negative, but it is an excellent cover! Peter Steele's deep voice lends something to the song that the original version just didn't have. "Can't lose you" is a love song of sorts that is somewhat repetitive (sp?), but is good nonetheless. "Blood & Fire" is AMAZING! It is about the loss of someone you love without knowing why you've lost them. "Too Late: Frozen" begins in such a way that you think it may be a slower song, but then it kicks in. It is perfect blend of blasting riffs and soothing vocals. It is hard to truly describe the song well, but one listen and you will understand why the song is so awesome!
