Free Music Notes for Bloody KissesFree Music Review: Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses Hit: 4 Stars
Currently their best album in my opinion, multiple unforgettable tracks entwined with offbeat filler. First, the filler. There is some strange stuff on this CD, and while not unenjoyable, it at times takes you out and away from the music and doesn't allow the CD to flow as well as it should. Now, onto the truly great stuff. One of my favorite songs of all time will be "Christian Woman". This three part epic is a stellar song that I have practically memorized over my mutiple listens. Next comes "Black No. 1", another epic and easily their most recognizable song, great stuff, but does not top "Christian Woman" in my opinion. "Summer Breeze" is an excellent cover song, improving greatly upon the original, essentially turning an upbeat, poppy song into a drab, droning gothic metal masterpiece. "Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family)" is an ode to lost love, no album with gothic undertones is complete without it. "Too Late : Frozen" seems to be a faster paced song at first, until it slams into a wall to instantly become dark and depressing. Brilliantly done. "Blood & Fire" is also a great track, althought I prefer the Out of the Ashes Remix personally. And finally the CD closes with "Can't Lose You", a nice little closer that has a touch of country to it... What? That doesn't hurt the song however, in fact, it only helps it. So this is an excellent CD that I feel could have been streamlined a bit to help improve it. But I would still recommend this masterpiece to anyone.
Free Music Review: Thoroughly Surprised Hit: 4 Stars
Back in high school some friends of mine were huge Type O Negative fans. Wanting to give the band a shot I borrowed this album and October Rust from them. My impressions were that it was a hodge podge of boring goth rock and utterly nonsensical tracks. Keep in mind however that I was mostly listening to extreme metal and classical in those days and hence my reaction. On a whim I decided to pick this album up used years later and WOW, what a difference eight or so years makes. I found this album to be thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The tracks which I found boring before I now find engrossing and the hodge podge material is actually quite amusing. While I feel this album is just shy of five stars I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the band. Best tracks are: Christian Woman, Black No. 1 and the title track.
Free Music Review: Best music to get a tatto to Hit: 4 Stars
This music will forever be burned into my soul (and body) as it was playing while my tattoo was being put on my body. I went out and immediately bought the CD which is very dark and very deep. You have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to this music. Certainly not for light and easy listening...but the very bad girl in me loves it.
Free Music Review: Campy/Cheesy Gothic Metal - An Occasional Guilty Pleasure . . . Hit: 3 Stars
This is basically run-of-the-mill 80s-style hair metal draped in black. If this turns you on, you'll probably go for goofy goth punks the Misfits or pompous dark lord Danzig if not Motley Crue, all of whom I consider to be less than stellar musicians. These reviewers sadly going on about how Type O Negative are these fantastic musicians clearly haven't been around the block far enough to hear some truly mind-blowing music. I suggest they take a clue from the back cover of BLOODY KISSES which reads: "Don't mistake lack of talent for genius."
Still, BLOODY KISSES definitely captures an appropriately doom & gloom atmosphere, mixing in creepy atmospherics and using suitably dark instruments (in this context at least) like organ and what sounds like a celeste. The album has a lot of variation and clearly they did put some hard work into it. "Kill All The White People" breaks out into old-school style speed metal while "Set Me On Fire" is essentially a shockingly upbeat pop song. Most of these songs tend to be slow and heavy though. The lyrics are often clever and amusingly silly, but tight-wad conservative Christians will be offended, so if yer one of those I suggest you go listen to Stryper.
Sorry Type O fans, but most of this stuff is just too cheesy for my tastes. The gruff, meat-head/jock sing/shout-alongs ("Loving you was like loving the dead!!!") and the cow bell beats just about kill my ability to enjoy this CD. I do, however, love the deep, rich, undead-sounding voice of the lead singer.
But the one song here I truly dig is the cover of the old Seals & Crofts tune, "Summer Breeze." Giving that song a dreamy goth-metal tweak was a stroke of genius and TON pull it off beautifully - it's a freakin trip! It reminds me of another cheesy lite-metal band that I was never into at all although I absolutely loved their vamped-up and sleazed-out cover of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" - the band? - Faster Pussycat. Oh yeah, I also like the in-between bits on BLOODY KISSES like "Dark Side of the Womb" which sounds like a baby getting aborted by a machine while "Machine Screw" sounds like a woman getting it on with, you guessed it, a machine. Once in a blue moon I'll check out "Christian Woman," but the rest of this album I just don't think is very good, to be perfectly honest. To be generous though, I'll give it an extra point for "Summer Breeze" even though this is pretty much a two-star record in my book.
Free Music Review: Unfocussed but entertaining Hit: 3 Stars
I used to hate this band, but I've sort of come to terms with them. I now own 2 of their albums, Bloody Kisses and October Rust. You don't really need more I guess. It's like the band says on the back inlay: "don't mistake lack of talent for genius." A fitting description, I appreciate the honest sense of humour. TYN should not be taken too seriously, they are limited in their skills. This album is absolutely entertaining. Its abbundance of musical styles, influences, humorous interludes and what more prevent it however from being really dark or disturbing. People crediting this album as the best gothic album, even the band would have a laugh I think. Check out Gothic by Paradise Lost or Pornography by The Cure. Still some great stuff on this album; Christian Woman and Black No 1 are some of the famous tunes of this album. The good things; a good, heavy guitar sound, some strong melodies and a good production. The bad things; some songs drag on way too long, while other songs distract the listener from the dark, gothic experience. Overall a decent album.
