Free Music Review: A great introduction to TON
Hit: 4 Stars

This interesting greatest hits CD of New York Goth band Type O Negative is a great starting point for new converts. Led by gigantic front man Peter Steele, towering over six feet with a voice that would crack a castle door, TON has been touring and recording long enough to impress even the most conservative of rock critics. These guys, including Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver and Johnny Kelly, love their craft. But that's just a small part of the allure of this extremely unique quartet.

One of the greatest Goth bands in history, TON pounds through one hit after another including "Black," "Everyone I Love is Dead," "Christian Woman," "Love You to Death," "Everything Dies" (my favorite) and of course, the David Leanian anthem, "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity." Their confident skill comes only from a band having toured for well over a decade.

When watching these guys live, all eyes are on Steele. Call it mesmerizing intimidation. Put an ax in his hand and a helmet on his head and, by God, you have the mutant son of Thor and Satan. I suppose I have a peculiar fascination with this talented group. Songs last 10 to 12 minutes. Choruses change in mid-verse, riffs slow down at unexpected moments. A silhouetted Steele tells stories into the insanely tall microphone. It's not easy to understand just what inspires this foursome to write such unusual songs played for us mere hobbits.

Type O Negative is not really jamming during their endless numbers more than they just perform indefinable productions within their brooding heads. They are an acquired taste, requiring great concentration before finally reaching the foggy climatic plateau where Christopher Lee crouches and Alice Cooper hides. Once within their wax museum nightmare, welcome to a lost paradise.

"The Least Worst" CD has most of the songs that put these guys on the map. These cuts will never compare to seeing their live performances, but it gives a clue to the fruitful career of a dedicated and immensely talented Goth rock band. For those unknowing, this purchase is well worth your time.

Free Music Review: Where is the rest?
Hit: 4 Stars

Type O Negative has been one of my favorite bands since my brother-in-law introduced me to them a few years back and I was really looking foward to getting their latest release. I wasn't disappointed by the album or the selection of songs, but more by the selection of versions of songs. To clarify, I would liked to have had the full length versions of Love You To Death, Black No. 1, and Everything Dies.

As for the unrelaesed stuff, I thought that 12 Black Rainbows was an extraordinary song, even for TON. The guitar riff is an amazing addition to that song and it wouldn't be the same without it.

Stay Out of My Dreams, musically was great, but the lyrics do leave something to be desired, but after a moment one can get used to them once realized that the lyrics are just tounge and cheek.

As for Black Sabbath and, well, the other one slips my mind at this moment, they are worthy additions to a great album.

The highlight of this album is the mix of Cinnamon Girl, which borders on the side of techno. I would have bought the album for just that track.

Good album overall, but still I wish for the full length of those before mentioned songs. Worthy of 4 stars.

Free Music Review: Fitting title, but something is missing
Hit: 4 Stars

For a band that is consistently dark, moody, sarcastic, evil, hilarious, and any other adjective you can think of, this compilation is quite representative of their work. Unfortunately, they (or maybe their label) succumbed to the typical greatest hits monstrosity by including mostly radio edits. For most bands, this wouldn't be detrimental, but for a band that consistently records songs that exceed 7 minutes in length, theses edited versions don't usually do the band justice. In fact, they even excluded the song "Suspended in Dusk" that appeard on the Digipak for Bloody Kisses and the now out-of-print (I think) Christian Woman single. Yet they managed to include 12 Black Rainbows which appeared on the Everything Dies single. I would rather they save the new songs for a new album and include the legitimate hard to find. I know this review sounds extremely negative, but that is a major disappointment for me. This CD does however capture everything that IS Type O Negative, and is a must have for their fans. For new fans, this is the best introduction to the grinding, depressing, and sometimes side-splitting humor that the band has to offer.

Free Music Review: Awesome B-sides, edited classic songs
Hit: 4 Stars

This album is great, and definitely worth the buy, but don't expect the full Type O experience. The unreleased songs "12 Black Rainbows," "It's Never Enough," and "Stay Out of my Dreams" are worth the price alone. I don't understand how Stay Out of my Dreams didn't make the cut for World Coming Down. Not gloomy enough? Maybe. I personally consider it better than most of the songs on WCD.

Anyway, concerning the rest of the album, a few of the classics were shortened in length to make the 80 minute time limit on the CD. Specifically "Everyone I Love is Dead," "Black No. 1," "Christian Woman," "Love You to Death," and "Everything Dies" (Black No. 1 and Christian Woman being almost halved from their original lengths).

While I would recommend this as an album for any aspiring Type O fan (this is where I started, after all), and definitely for the unreleased songs, I wouldn't really recommend it as a compilation album to keep in your car to listen to all the classics. That is, unless you want to listen to edited songs. I, personally, would rather burn a CD with the original songs on it for that stuff.

Free Music Review: Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Pete Steele
Hit: 4 Stars

This collection of b-sides, rare tracks, remixes and previously-unreleased tracks showcases TON not at their best, but at their most versatile.

Theres the long, dark, gothic tracks like "Black Sabbath....." and "Never enough" and the more accessible tracks like "Christian Woman" "12 black rainbows" and "Black No. 1". Then theres wierder ones, like "hey, Pete" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend". Unfortunately, not all the mixes work (i prefer the full version of 'Everything Dies', for example), and so this album only gets 4 stars from me.

Because of its wide range of tracks, this album is a great buy for new fans looking for a good introduction to Pete Steele and Co., and the rare and unreleased tracks make it a good choice for established fans as well. More casual fans might prefer October Rust or World Coming Down instead, though.
