Free Music Review: Shock rockers enter the mainstream

There are so many highlights on this disc, you'd never finish reading this review if I tried to list them all. But any discussion of the best tracks has to begin with "Love You To Death," without a doubt Type O Negative's signature song and the best track they've ever recorded. This song will conjure up vivid mental images as Steele's brilliant lyrics paint a picture of willing subservience to your female lover, with 100 candles burning and black lipstick staining her glass of red wine. The basic but beautifully haunting piano, backed by deliciously heavy guitar riffs and ethereal backing vocals, make this song a true masterpiece...the Goth national anthem, but equally enjoyable by mainstream listeners.

Other instant TON classics include "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend," about living every man's dream; and "Cinnamon Girl", Type O's version of the Neil Young song. Both of these are the type of radio-friendly track that many thought TON would never record; but both are excellent, and their strategic placement among the other tracks on the album is perfect. "Green Man," "Burnt Flowers Fallen" and "Be My Druidess" are solid songs, all having an almost power-pop quality.

Two songs that are brilliant, yet a bit scary and depressing, are "Die With Me" and "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)". These tracks are good showcases of Peter Steele's talent, as his incredibly deep, unique voice compels you to actually feel his sadness for a girlfriend who is going away, and family members who are no longer with him on Christmas (and whom, you strongly suspect, the singer of the song might have killed).

You always get your money's worth on a TON CD, as they tend to go the full 80 minutes, and it's quality stuff, not just filler. But what sets October Rust apart from all other CDs is its thunderous conclusion, as you get almost 20 minutes of lyrical and musical perfection with the back-to-back tracks "Wolf Moon" and "Haunted." The mandolin-tinged notes of "Wolf Moon", with beautiful cello injections, lead into provocative lyrics about wolves in the night, with slight hints about menstruation (if you can believe that). And the final track, "Haunted", is one of the most memorable recordings ever made. Though not designed for commercial success, "Haunted" holds your undivided attention through more than 10 minutes of unique musical effects, including spoken poetry, highlighted by lovely, haunting piano notes reminiscent of "Love You To Death". You'll again succumb to mental pictures of the undead roaming the night, rejoicing in their time under the stars...until morning's cold light chases them back to the crypts and caves from whence they came. "I hate the morning", sings Steele...in only the way that things cursed to shun the light of the sun can hate the morning.

"October Rust" is a masterpiece...without this album, no collection of rock music is truly complete.
