Free Music Notes for October RustFree Music Review: Beautifully Depressed!!!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Let me begin by saying that Type O does not have ONE crappy album in their catelog. Some better than others...yeah, but a crap CD...none. If one was to take a chance and purchase a cd, October Rust would be a great start...with Bloody Kisses a tie.
While Bloody Kisses (the band's biggest selling album to date) showcases Type O in a dark, vampire-like blood drinking horror, with an obvious Heavy Metal undertone, October Rust showcases them in true Goth/Metal fashion, with a HEAVY emphasis on melody while keeping things heavy. Like a 14th century castle dimmly lit by torch and candlelight, like a beautiful woman dressed in black and sobbing sadly with a smile...one cannot ignore the immense talent that Type O posseses. While the majority of their songs are not complex, the melodies, countermelodies and chord voicings carry October from beginning to end in one great big Gothic love affair. IF you are a first time listener, this is an album that M.U.S.T. be listened to with a 100 percent focus to detail. this is one of those releases that requires one to sit down, with a drink, dimm the lights (or turn them off), light a few candles and just listen...nice an loud...with NO interruptions.
Aside from the usual "prank" tracks that they are famous for, the album opens with Love You to Death...quite possibly one of the best dark love songs EVER written. it moves through like a black raincloud hanging low on a very dark winters day...moving slowly, holding form and intriguing those observing. Be My Druidess is a lighter side from "Death", with a very catchy groove courtesy of drummer Johnny Kelly. Other greats in the same vein as the first two are In Praise of Baccus, Red Water (Christmas mourning), Wolf moon and My Girlfriends Girlfriend. All songs are strong with structure, melody and warmth. Two acoustic-based pieces, Green Man and Die With Me, show Type O's softer side which is BRILLIANT!!!! Type O is a band that "tunes down' the guitars to give a much richer, deeper heavier sound, and REALLY shows with the 12 string acoustic guitars used on these two tracks....wonderful.
The highlights of the album are Cinnimon Girl, a cover of Neil Youngs original version, and Haunted. Cinnimon is brilliant from start to finish. An even BETTER version is available on the Least Worst of Type O Negative...which is a collection of hits and rarities...a very industrial/new wave version...like Nine Inch Nails meets Depeche Mode.
Slow, dragging, creepy, dark, cold and wet best describes Haunted, which brings October Rust to a close. Haunted shows Peter Steele's superior vocal strength ranging from the lowest of growltype spoken words to a howl; like a vampire in deep pain from a broken heart.
Being a fan of MANY genres (especially metal), I rate this album without a second glance in my top 10 of ALL TIME! It might take a few spins to get to that level...It took me a few I must confess. The first spin will have one saying its good...then it will go to very good, then great than awesome, then...well you get the point.
Type O Negative is quite possibly the most underrated band of all time. Which is very frustrating in today's era of "cookie-cutter" bands. My recommendation, buy it allong with Bloody Kisses...the two blend wonderfully like coffee and cream...trust me...this is good stuff!!!!
Free Music Review: Pure Gothic Metal Greatness Hit: 5 Stars
Words just cannot describe how much I love Type O Negative and the music they make. These guys are truly one of the best gothic metal bands in my book. Whever I feel like losing myself into a different world with a dark, brooding, yet great beautiful atmosphere, this is definately my band of choice. I really got into Type O Negative when I picked up their 1996 effort "October Rust" which is a fantastic follow up to their 1993 breakthrough masterpiece "Bloody Kisses" (an incredible album BTW), and I quickly fell in love with it. This album just brings tears to my eyes whenever I listen to it.
Everything about "October Rust" is just excellent. I mean the songwriting on here is just amazing, the lyrics are full of pain, loss, death, obsession, despair, depression, and dare I say love as well. The musicianship is just amazing as well. Frontman Peter Steele's vocals are dare I say absolutely heartfelt and downright amazing. His singing voice is very deep yet melodic at the same time. There is no doubt that he is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. The guitarwork by Kenny Hickey is dark, slow, sludgy, brooding, and adds a great feel to the band's sound. Josh Silver's keyboardwork is very atmospheric yet beautiful sounding, and of course drummer Johnny Kelly (his first album with TON) keeps his beats at a slow yet very steady pace.
The albums starts off with the band pulling off a little joke and before you know it, we're immediately thrusted into the real opening song "Love You To Death" which features great piano in the background as well as some dark brooding riffs, spectacular keyboard effects, and wonderful vocals from Peter. This is without question the best song on the album as well as my favorite. Another one of my favorites "Be My Druidess" features a nice groovy drum beat, while "Green Man" has some beautiful accoustic strings at the beginning as well as some touching lyrics dealing with nature and human conditions through the seasons. Other favorites on here include a nice catchy cover of Neil Young's "Cinnaman Girl" "In Praise of Bacchus" "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" (this one's a real tearjerker), "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", "Wolf Moon", "Die With Me", and "Haunted". Please read on for my song ratings.

Free Music Review: Five Stars Aren't Enough!! Hit: 5 Stars
I'll admit, usually my tastes in music run to Thrash and Death Metal, but when I chanced upon this album (after seeing the video for "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend"), I knew I had struck gold!! Here's a little breakdown...
The Music: The whole Beatles/Black Sabbath thing has been said before, but it's true. The unforgettable melodies of the Beatles, and the imposing doom 'n gloom of vintage Sabbath. The songs veer from the poppiness of 'My Girlfriend's Girlfriend' to the sprawling majesty of 'Haunted' and all points in between. Probably my favourite thing about this album is that there are so many cool, weird noises buried in the mix, that every time you listen, you hear something different. You could spend YEARS trying to digest this.
The Lyrics: Sometimes creepy, sometimes humorous, always on the mark. And made all the better by Peter Steele's rich baritone delivery (and backed up by the Bensonhoist Lesbian Choir - I'm not making this up!!).
The Production: This is where it gets weird. Sometimes it sounds like it was recorded at Abbey Road, and other times it sounds as if it were tracked onto an old-school four-track in Josh Silver's garage. And how they manage to blend the two aesthetics so FLAWLESSLY is something I've pondered fruitlessly for many years.
The Performance: Although no one would ever accuse these guys of being virtuosos with regard to technicality, the sometimes straightforward approach lets the music BREATHE. They probably realised that an overly technical approach (of which they are fully capable of, as evidenced on their earlier stuff) would confuse an already complicated thing.
The Highlights: EVERYTHING! Well to be more specific, here goes...
Love You To Death - Beautiful, and hauntingly romantic. If your girlfriend happens to be a metal fan (as she bloody well should be!), pop this in the background, and enjoy one hell of a shagfest!
Green Man - Catchy as hell, with a very cool (albeit bizzarre) sample of a garbage truck at the beginning.
In Praise Of Bacchus - An awesome ode to the Roman god of wine, and always a great tune to get hammered to.
Haunted - Creeping slower-than-buggery doom-laden metal with a sprawling, poetic feel and (like most songs on this record) erotic overtones.
In Summary: This album is perfectly flawless. Although I dig "Bloody Kisses" and "World Coming Down", this album is where the 'O' hit their stride. And on a related not, if you're a heterosexual guy, AVOID ANY CONTACT with the Peter Steele Playgirl pics!! The absolute LAST thing you want to visualise when you put on this record is Peter's 'schlong'... it took me YEARS to erase that mental pic! Otherwise... ENJOY!!
Free Music Review: Oh, how I HATE the morning... Hit: 5 Stars
If BLOODY KISSES was their "underdog wins the Super Bowl" album, then OCTOBER RUST is TON defending their crown, and crushing the competition in the process. It's hard for me to say which album is better. It depends on your point of view, and, for that matter, how you're feeling. OR is more mature, a band at the top of their game, willing to take chances and experiment. BK was their rising to the top, finding their sound, and their way. If BK is their REVOLVER, then OR is their SGT. PEPPER'S. I like REVOLVER better myself, but the majority embraced SGT. PEPPER'S. OR is their outdoor album-BK is their haunted house or mausoleum album. Both have such strong imagery and intense emotion that, in the end, I think they sit side by side, like twin towers during their creative peek. As far as OR itself, it's a masterpiece, plain and simple. Nothing in the modern rock or pop world even comes close (to BK either). Beauty, love, obsession, longing, depression, resignation, etc.-it's all here, with a very woodsy/foresty sheen to it. What's sets this album apart from the others (even BK) is that keyboards dominate throughout. Josh Silver's presence has never been as blatant as it is here on OR. Sweeping grand piano, gothic keyboards, cheesy (almost) casio-type organ, not to mention other styles are all present on OR, sometimes several at the same time. If OR is better than BK (and let's be honest-that's arguable), it's not because it's more polished or because the production is better, but because it's more melodic. On no other TON album does Peter Steele have more songs that contain actual melodies (strong, memorable ones too) where he's actually singing than on OR. If anything sets this album apart from all the others, it's that. For me, HAUNTED is the best song. I know a lot of you feel LOVE YOU TO DEATH is, but no song moves me more than HAUNTED. From 6'47" til the end of the song is the most powerful, tear inducing music I've ever heard-EVER!!! Contrary to what another reviewer felt, I rewind this track continuously, never tiring of a song so filled with passion, obsession, sadness, loss, and yes-LOVE. This song (and LOVE YOU TO DEATH) is Peter Steele's attempt to break through man's (any man) unwillingness (or inability) to truly express his deepest emotions without fear of rejection or ridicule. To put ourselves 'out there', and not worry about the consequences, is one of the most empowering (and freeing) things anyone can do, yet most of us rarely display this level of courage. Yes, there's some filler tracks on the album. But, there are no weak songs here. TON puts themselves 'out there' with OCTOBER RUST, and succeeds in a big way-This is truly A TIMELESS CLASSIC.
Free Music Review: Type O's Prime Hit: 5 Stars
Three years after their masterpiece, Type O Negative releases their 1996 album, October Rust. Although October Rust wasn't as commercially succesfully as Bloody Kisses, it defintley is much better than Bloody Kisses. If Bloody Kisses is a masterpiece, then what would someone call this? Let's see the tracks shall we...
1. Bad Ground- It's a joke intro. Not much need to be said.
2.(Untitled)-A Thank you from the band.
3. Love You To Death-My absolute favorite song from this album, maybe my favorite Type O Negative song. The beginning might fool you due to the piano, but trust me, this song has a drab mood, but is a classin nonetheless. And Pete's vocals are amazing on this one.
4. Be My Druidess-A Very Driving beat to this song makes it perfect. Another highly reccomended song, a shame they almost never play it now.
5. Green Man-Starts out really earthy and with low vocals but then launches into a typical Type O Negative beat. Once again, Peter does an incredible job on vocals.
6. Red Water(Christmas Mourning)-The intro is incredible. Very gloomy song, though even for Type O Negative.
7. My Girlfriend's Girlfriend-The intro makes me laugh with the drums and organ, everyone likes this song a lot, but it doesn't appeal to me much. But still a great song
8. Die With Me-The acoustic sounding guitars are awesome for this song. Another favorite.
9. Burnt Flowers Fallen-Another one that doesn't appeal too much, but this song doesn't sound like it was from 1996, it sounds too ahed of its time, although it doesn't appeal to me that much, it is still an awesome song.
10. In Praise Of Bacchus-I absolutely love this song. The guitars in the beginning are outstanding and so is Pete's Voice. Anyone who buys this album, has to hear this song.
11. Cinnamon Girl-Ah...the Neil Young cover. And it is a great cover. Much more driving than the original, but it still makes you want to sing to it. Type O Negative really makes it their own.
12. The Glorious Liberation Of The People's Technocratic Republic Of Vinnland By The Combined Forces-Eh...nothing much to mention here...just an interlude.
13. Wolf Moon-A Very dark song. As well as the beginning is very dark.
14. Haunted- Amazing way to end an amazing album. Although it's 10 minutes, try to get past that and listen to the whole song.
15. (Untitled)-Goodbye From The Band.
