Free Music Review: Type O Negative "October Rust"
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me start by saying that I'm no newcomer to music. My first album was Led Zeppelin's "Led Zeppelin." I got that album in the summer of 1972 from my "babysitter." She gave it to me for my 10th birthday.

My second and third ever albums were Deep Purple "Machine Head" and Alice Cooper's "School's Out."

I saw Van Halen's debut tour with Black Sabbath in 1978.

I saw the KISS reunion Tour #1 in I think around 1995 or 96, whenever their first retour took off, at the Great Western in LA, CA.

Anyway, I've seen a lot of bands, old and new, and I've been around rock for years.

I'd never heard of this band until a younger friend of mine, 26, turned me on to them about three days ago. He gave me "World Coming Down" and I about crapped my pants. He then gave me this album, "October Rust."

These guys were refreshing in that their sound is unique. That's an understatement. Yes, they remind me of Christian Death or Bauhaus, but I never thought either of those two quite pulled it off, although I have a profound respect for both bands. I guess I could say the same thing for Type O, but just trust me and other reviewers here: If you want something refreshing and original, with a sound that will blow you away, get "World Coming Down," or this album.

I can't give any other review except to say that the goth, gloom hits an all time high here. There are no fast guitar speed metal riffs or berserk drum beats, but the beats immersed me in an incredible world of ebb and flow, up and down, rich, strong, moving ranges. In other words, they never bored me.

If you have never heard anything by this band--you won't be sorry.

By the way, the instrumentals and vocal really do deserve a good system to fully appreciate, and enjoy, this quite unique sound. It's not really something you want to listen to on a boom box. A good set of earphones and a nice transparent mp3 or similar file will do the trick, but to FULLY appreciate the sound, listen to it on a system where you can actually feel the bass and other lows in your chest. I'd not talking about block away volume. In fact, this music doesn't need to be cranked to enjoy it. It just needs a good system to reproduce it's heavy, back beat, slow, full spectrum energy.

Free Music Review: It's been my favorite for years now...
Hit: 5 Stars

A friend introduced me to Type-O Negative quite a few years ago. At first I was reluctant to listen to it because I thought the band was a bunch of vampire-wannabe freaks. Back then I knew nothing about Gothic music, but I was a huge metal fan--listening to everything from Metallica to Pantera and Halford in-between. Since my first listen and thousands more this album has grown on me exponentially to the point of being the one album I can listen to over and over and never get tired of. The music is just so full of emotion. At first some of the songs depressed me, but now it's like coming home. It actually cheers me up and puts me in a melancholy mood that fits perfectly with who I am. Type-O doesn't take themselves or their lyrics seriously at times, which is a waste in my opinion, because this album is a pinnacle that may never be reached again by any Gothic band. It's *that* good. I've been searching all over the place for something similar, but the haunting mood of this album can't be matched. In my opinion October Rust is the epitomy of Gothic music and Type-O hit the nail in the coffin (er on the head) with this album. Words can't express how good this album is. Buy it and let yourself be taken away to a world you never knew existed. "Die with Me" and "Love You to Death" are two songs I can relate to; love in its deepest form. "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" is so sad that you can't stop listening to it. "Haunted" is by far my favorite track. I could listen to Peter's deep singing all day. The interlude in the middle of the song is just perfect. "In Praise of Bacchus", "Burnt Flowers Fallen" and "Wolf Moon" are powerful. "Cinnamon Girl" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" are typical Type-O fun. If you've never heard Gothic music before and want to hear the best right up front this is the only album you will need. It will leave you wanting more. The other Type-O albums don't reach this level of perfection and emotion. They broke the Gothic mold and nothing else compares. 8 years since its release it's still best. Stop reading this review and buy the album now. If you don't you'll be missing out on something truly monumental in music.

Free Music Review: Floating and I don't wanna come 5 Stars

Without a doubt their masterpiece. Despite the fact that it is sometimes referred to as their most commercial album, it really is a beautiful and haunting collection of songs. Make no mistake, "Bloody Kisses" and "World Coming Down" are brilliant albums in their own right, but for me this is the one that delivers the goods. The harmonies and ethereal atmosphere on this album is breathtaking in it's complexity, yet is so easy to listen to. The guitars are ever present and up-front, yet they are never harsh and abrasive, nor do they seem to dominate the preceedings. Peter Steele's vocals on this album are about the best that he has ever done, and it's a testimony to the skill and virtues of the band that they can take a Neil Young song like "Cinnamon Girl", slap it in the middle of an album like this, and remarkably, it doesn't sound ridiculous or out of place whatsoever.

This is a perfect album for just laying back, closing your eyes and letting it take you wherever you want, (or it wants) to go. I find it amusing that this band is so readily labelled as a morbid and dark goth band, yet there are so many shades of light within their music. And like all really good bands, there is contradiction within each of their albums to some extent. And in a way that has always been the point with TON, they always keep it interesting and lively for their fans, and most importantly of all never take themselves too seriously in the process. And they are all the more powerful for it.

For many modern bands, particularly those at the heavier and more alternate end of the scale, their always seems to be an attitude and importance placed on (albeit mostly by the media), who is the fastest, heaviest, loudest, angriest, etc etc etc. It is refreshing and extremely rewarding to hear an album of this calibre, where the most important thing is the sound you hear in your head, not what you were told was supposed to be good or fashionable at the time. From the opening piano burst on "Love you to Death" right through to the final choir-like cries on "Haunted", this album will thrill you, chill you and keep you coming back for more.

Free Music Review: Type O Negative Paints a Marvelous Portrait.
Hit: 5 Stars

You either love this album or you hate it. It's an American band -but they're pretty decent, unlike all the other crap bands america spits out every day. The album was designed to make the listeners experience Autumn and Winter in an audio environment rather than a physical environment - and its done rather succesfully. From the album booklet filled with pictures of leafless trees to the haunting and sometimes serene atmosphere the band paints with their instruments, this is the best audio interpretation of an autumn potrait I have heard (or seen).

The album kicks off with a joke and intro from the band members introducing themselves (a bit unconventional but not a major). The first song of the album is one of the greatest love songs ever written - "Love You to Death," and sets the mood and tempo for the album straight away. At this point I must add that if you have a low tolerance for unorthodox lyrics about women, be warned. The songs concludes with Steele asking "Am I good enough for you?", and wraps up an awesome love song.

Another track worth mentioning is "Red Water", in which Christmas is introduced through none other than jingling bells mixed with Steele's haunting voice and incredibly odd-sounding guitar (I think he cranks the chorus up really high - this can be found throughout the album). A song that you can fall asleep to, but not get bored by (if that makes sense).

"My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" is one of my favorite songs to drive down the highway with. its very catchy and one of the songs cemented into their live set. One of the shorter songs on the album and is guaranteed to give you a laugh or two.

"Wolf Moon" is essential to the collection of melodic metal fans. I can't describe this song in any way, other than telling you if you haven't heard this you are missing out on something great: Easily the best Type O song in existence.

I conclude that this album is outstanding - far better than any other Type O albums. The atmosphere, the shifts from highs to lows, the spine-chilling voice, the synth and other elements are arranged to give a listening experience that is truly unique.

Free Music Review: A very addicting album
Hit: 5 Stars

October Rust is one of the greatest albums I own bar none. Its songs are melodic, sexual, introspective, and haunting. Peter Steele's lyrics are passionate and thought provoking and his bass is the same. Kenny Hickey's guitar playing is very haunting and well-crafted. Josh Silver's keyboards give the album a whimsical, fantasy-laced touch and Johnny Kelly's drums are well tuned.

Bad Ground: A bunch of feedback but it segues into something not expected.

2: A funny introduciton to the album with the men of Type O Negative introducing themselves. Check out one of the boys making noises of a clucking chicken

Love You to Death: A haunting love song. Kenny's guitar is passionate as well as Josh's keyobards. Peter's lyrics are unbelieveable and deeply sensual as well as his singing.

Be My Druidness: A very sensual song that seduces any person.

The Green Man: Another great song.

Red Water(Christmas Mourning: A dirgeful song about Christmas and dealing with the loss of those who didn't live long enough to spend it with him.

My Girlfriend's Girlfriend: A very kinky song. Peter Steele is very sensual with his singing.

Die With Me: A love song that is passionate and well-crafted. Probably my most favorite on October Rust.

Burnt Flowers Fallen: Another great song. Again, a very haunting song.

In Praise of Baccus: Good lyrics, excellent musicianship.

Cinnamon Girl: An excellent remake of Neil Young's classic.

Glorious Liberation of the People's ....: An interesting instrumental.

Wolf Moon: A haunting song.

Haunted: There is some really good storytelling in that song.

15: A conclusion to the album with Peter hoping the fans like the album and he would see them later in touring. A humorous way to finish an album.

Again, October Rust is an excellent album. Every Type O Negative fan should own this album. It's probably my favorite album and I am happy to own this. It's also very addicting.
