Free Music Review: Happy Halloween, and beware the wolves at night...
Hit: 5 Stars

Ah yes, Halloween is here again, and what better way to celebrate it than with an album like "October Rust"? It has become somewhat of a tradition for me to listen to this album every Halloween (but not only on Halloween, of course), and one listen should tell you why.

Taking the sludgy metal of Black Sabbath and the gothy atmospherics of the Cure, Type O Negative have crafted a distinctive style of doomy goodness that will fulfill all of your vampiric needs. Frontman Pete Steele's booming vocals drive these tracks perfectly, melding beautifully with the thick layers of guitars and keys. Songs like "Love You to Death", "Wolf Moon", and "Red Water" draw you in with their dark, enveloping melodies, with Pete's unique vocals underscoring them like no other vocalist could. But, all of the above are nearly a ray of sunshine compared to the closing track, the huge, epic "Haunted". This song crawls at a snail's pace for its 10-minute length, like some sinister creature emerging from the depths, and likewise Pete's vocals reach their peak of haunting evilness. The line "Oh, how I hate the morning light" is sung in such an impossibly low octave, you'd swear this fellow cannot be human. Purely awesome.

However, this album isn't all sludgy doom. There's plenty of diversity here, while keeping with the dark, sinister feel. "Die with Me" is more wistful and plaintive, while "Be My Druidess" has a vaguely Cure-like feel. The band also lighten things up a bit with the wacky pop tune "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", and a fun cover of Neil Young's "Cinammon Girl".

Simply put, a Halloween without Type O is not complete. When you party with the ghosts and ghouls tonight, don't forget to put this on.

Free Music Review: A sad day....a great, great album!
Hit: 5 Stars

I just had to write having heard of the passing of Type O's Peter Steele. I'm in shock and dismay, and probably more upset by his death than any other artist in recent memory. A lot of that is due to this very album, the masterpiece called "October Rust". Since it's release in 1996, it has remained my Number One Favorite album of the last fourteen years. And I've heard a LOT of music over those years. This, their finest moment, transcends mere heavy-metal. Or hard rock. Or goth. Or alternative. It's all of those, but so much more. I can't think of any other album that still sends little shivers down my spine when I play it. The voice of the Man himself, the songwriting, the performances - it puts all other similar bands to shame. I still hear little bits and pieces in the background of these songs that I never heard before. And that's the beauty of this band. Being able to produce in his own studio meant Peter Steele could tinker and play with the songs for as long as he wanted. And he did. The results are an album that simply transports you into its own universe. Very little "metal" can ever be called beautiful, but this album is gothic beauty in spades. There's only a few bands I can think of who have created their own musical world - Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Cure and Depeche Mode come to my mind, and of course, Type O Negative. If you've heard all the R.I.P.s' and accolades over the last few days, and have never heard this album, do yourself a favor. Then try the rest, all masterpieces in their own right. But this was the zenith of Peter Steele's writing and producing abilities. A true genius has left us, and I am so sad. No more Type O albums?? Tears well up as I write. I feel like.....a death in the family.

Free Music Review: An underrated gem of an album...
Hit: 5 Stars

Type O Negative broke new ground with "Bloody Kisses," an album that explored the limits of slow gothic dirge and blended it with fast metal attitude. It mixed provocative subject matter and imagery with a touch of self-parody. Now with "October Rust," the band took a new direction, continuing musically along the path of "Bloody Kisses," but employing a more naturalistic atmosphere. With songs like "Burnt Flowers Fallen," "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)," and a cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl," this album gives the impression that it was written while the band was out camping in the middle of the forrest, spending many cold autumn nights reminiscing on whatever they could think of to provide good lyrics. "Love You to Death" is a classic ballad, full of erotic energy as well as romantic sentimentality. It's a great song for couples to stargaze to right before making out. "Wolf Moon (Including Zoanthropic Paranoia)" is probably the best song on the album, with infectious riffs and a wonderful chorus, as well as the obligatory Peter Steele Gregorian Chant. "Haunted" is the song that got me into Type O Negative, so I have a lot of love for this song, even though it is about ten minutes long. And finally of course, the hit single in praise of bisexuality and threesomes, "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend," a strange mix of '60's psychedelia and '90's gothic metal. A classic track.
"October Rust" is an album that grows on you. It wasn't as immediate or as harsh or as fast as "Bloody Kisses," but this is hardly a bad thing. It shows the band progressing musically without losing the ability to mock themselves in the process. An underrated album to be sure...give it a chance.

Free Music Review: Nothing rusty about this wonderful album!
Hit: 5 Stars

This was a momentous album for Type O, it was one of those risky albums, because they faced a lot of critical fans who cried that familiar old complaint, that the band had sold out and gone commercial. What a load of rubbish! To be fair, this album abandons the familiar metal/rock resonance of Origin, SD&H and Bloody Kisses, in favour of a much more gothic direction. Try as you might, Type O Negative are just not catagorisable. Often described as Gothic Rock or Gothic Metal, I prefer to just leave them as Type O. Unique. And this album proves that.

Slow, dark, moody, melodic, mellow. All these words do a great job of describing this album, but then you have odd songs thrown in, like "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" and a cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" - which I think is the reason some fans go "Urgh - pop" - Aside from these brief uplifting moments, the album proudly mumbles along in its rhythmical meloncholly.

Among my personal favorite tracks are the opening song, "Love You To Death" and "In Praise of Bacchus". Both of which oose gothiness. Watching an autumnal sunset with "Wolf Moon" playing gently in the background has to be the ultimate high for anyone into goth in any way. And I guaruntee a tear during "Burnt Flowers Fallen", Pete Steele sounds as depressed as ever, but you actually feel for him as he passionately cries "All of the flowers I gave her, she burned them".

Ahh. Anyway, no goth collection would be complete without this perfect, perfect album

Free Music Review: Octobers Rust.....
Hit: 5 Stars

There is much debate over what the best Type O Negative album is. Most opinions center around the Heavy Gothic Rock of "Bloody Kisses". Some prefer the neanderthal trashing of "Slow Deep & Hard". My personal opinion, however, is that "October Rust" has been Type O Negative's shining moment of glory. October Rust is by far the most eclectic, complex and sensual of Type O's LP's. The album twists and turns through a path of light and darkness unlike any other before (or after) it. The songs fall into either one of four categories: there are the heavy, dark, powerful 'Black Sabbathesque' like songs, such as "Burnt Flowers Fallen", "In Praise of Bacchus", "The Glorious Liberation...", and "Wolf Moon". Then there are the psychadelic, up-beat and funky songs such as "Be My Druidess", "My Girlfriends Girlfriend", and "Cinnamon Girl". Next there are the ambient, spiritual, and beautifully melodic songs such as "Love You To Death", "Green Man", and "Die With Me". Finally there are two hauntingly dark, depressing and morbid epics in the form of "Red Water (Christman Mourning)" and "Haunted". All in all, "October Rust", although slightly more commercial than Type O's other recordings, is their best album. You can hear their hearts, emotions, souls and passions poured into the uplifting music. Experience the enchantment today.
