Free Music Review: Pete has a bad day...
Hit: 4 Stars

There is some debate over how "live" this album actually is. Some claim it was recorded in the studio. The liner notes say it was recorded October 31st 1991 at Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

However it was recorded, Pete Steele and the rest of Type O Negative were having a bad day, and couldn't be happier.

Early in their career, the band were largely misunderstood, alienating the undeserved right wing following Steele's previous band Carnivore had picked up. They simply weren't hardcore enough for the skinheads. At the same time, the Gothic crowd who later championed the band, were scared off by the double kick drum flourishes, and thrash outs in many of the songs, but at the same time were drawn in by the melancholic, introspective lyrics, the theatrical vocals, and the doom laden keyboards and dirge-like arrangements.

Right from the start, the band are taunted with chants of "You suck, you suck!" but continue to play anyway. The jeers continue through the first song, originally titled "Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity", but more popularly known as "I Know You're F**king Someone Else". And the song winds it's way through pipe organ Gothicism, acoustic sections, hardcore singalongs, a Scottish accent, and thrash metal kick outs. It sounds a mess, but is an incredibly listenable epic.

The between song abuse between Steele and the audience is a treat, as are the moments when it all goes wrong. Third track "Gravity" breaks down completely, and in something reminiscent of Bad News or Spinal Tap, the band has to stop for an apparent bomb threat. "I guess this ain't your lucky day, huh? Let's just get this over with," mutters Steele as the band returns to the stage and blasts through a raucous version of "Pain".

There's a silly but fun take on "Hey Joe", with Steele's mournful moan and the trademark lumbering juggernaut guitar and bass sound adding some seriously sinister overtones Jimi Hendrix would never have dreamed of.

The show ends with a rollicking romp through a reprise of "Kill You Tonight", a cheerful ode to murdering an unfaithful lover, complete with cheesy New Romantic "whoa whoa" backing vocals, and a silly accent, sounding like a cross between Crocodile Dundee and EastEnders.

There's an ill-advised cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" tacked on the end. It doesn't fit Type O Negative's style, so the less said the better.

This whole album is surprisingly good fun from a band who are meant to be miserable bastards.

Free Music Review: Type O Entertains On Good 'Origin'...3.5 stars
Hit: 4 Stars

TYPE O NEGATIVE's first album, SLOW DEEP AND HARD, was a call to arms for the revolution of gothic metal. While hardly a consistent effort, it still has many strengths built on the musical foundation of the band. They can churn out great songs, but ORIGIN OF THE FECES was the real test. While having more of a "live" sound, it's also not a live album. "Paranoid" is the best track on this album, very creepy, slow, and kind of threatening. But for most Type O elites, "I Know You're F---ing Someone Else" kicks the album off in true Type O style, with Peter Steele's sense of humor still very much intact. The musical style that would define later releases was glimpsed here, with the guitar work of Kenny Hickey was starting to come into play. "Hey Pete" is a hilarious take on Jimi Hendrix's classic "Hey Joe". Instead of the tale of murder, it's Type O's tale of revenge on a cheating girlfriend. The wordplay between Peter and Kenny is great...it's got the Type O stamp all over it. The only quibble I have with ORIGIN is its sound. While still accessible and very crafted, its muddied in its production and it's the weakest album in terms of sound, but that doesn't mean its bad...not by any means. But, they could have seriously improved the overall sound of the album and it would have been instant classic Type O.

As it stands, ORIGIN OF THE FECES is another necessary step for Type O Negative, and one that would ultimately bring them into the spotlight with their next subsequent million-selling release BLOODY KISSES. If you want a sarcastic sense of humor, good musicianship, and can bear muddy production, ORIGIN OF THE FECES should keep you thoroughly entertained.

Free Music Review: Funny as hell as well as musically great
Hit: 4 Stars

This is Type O's infamous fake live album, and the band couldn't be having a better time. Peter Steele's responses to the (fake) crowd's insults are ingenious. It's also interesting to see how they rearranged the songs from Slow, Deep, and Hard, at least if you already have that album. As the album progresses, you get to sit through a twisted cover of Jimi Hendrix' "Hey Joe" with words like "Hey Peter, where you going with that axe in your hand?", as well as a split up version of Xero Tolerance, and of course the classic "Unsuccessfully Coping...". Also, the cover of Paranoid at the end of the album (which they didn't try to make sound live) is amazing and one of my favorite Type O songs ever, I don't know what's wrong with the people who don't like it. It's more in the October Rust (I'm listening to that right now) style. Sadly, despite all these good things about it, I had to give it 4 stars because "Der Untermensch" is excluded and that was one of my favorites from Slow, Deep, and Hard. Also, the CD is a bit short (by Type O standards at least) to be worth full price, not to mention that almost all the songs are already on another CD. Most of the songs aren't played all the way through. If you already have all the other Type O albums though, by all means, go for it. It's entertaining at the very least. (...)

Free Music Review: Mixed bowl
Hit: 3 Stars

Although it has some insufferable generic and amateur hardcore qualities, this cleverly conceived mock live album does contain enough melodic bloodlessness to ensure a future paid attention to.
