Free Music Review: another great from the Faroese metalliers

Tyr keeps producing high quality viking metal, and "Northern Star" is no exception. Not quite the soaring epics Ragnarok and Land (their best so far), Northern Star is great in many other ways, choosing to exchange epic length for pure viking muscle. Here we see frontman Heri Joenson's pagan pride really coming to the forefront, as nearly every track on this album is a heathen anthem, honoring the old gods and leading the charge against the enemy. Some may take offense at the blatantly anti-christian lyrics here, but honestly Tyr doesn't give a crap. They're heathens and *they* take offense that the religion of their ancestors was overrun by an essentially foreign one, primarily by force. They state their opinion on it and arent' afraid of who knows it.
Musically, Tyr is a viking/folk/pagan metal band (Joensen's description), but they're a major cut above the rest of this crowd, mainly by avoiding all that silly screaming and growling--certainly an acquired taste I haven't acquired, and nor do I want to. Instead, they infuse their songs with high energy and passion with crazy shredding, vigorous drumming and soaring vocals, often in their native Faroese (a fan favorite, apparently, and I love it too), with multipart harmonies. Couple this with "metallized" folk jigs and you will have a hard time getting it out of your head. Previous criticisms that Tyr sounds "samey" are unfounded, and probably related to the fact that the band introduces variety through complex melody, harmony, and myth-inspired lyrics, but use a highly refined sound, perfected to give them just the right atmosphere and timbre. In all, I hope Tyr has another 20 albums in them.
